Pavingthewayforfutureyoungminds,LoudounCountymaybewelcominganewscienceand ITcharterschoolinthenextcoupleofyearsifitpassesalltherequiredcriteria. TheLoudounMath&ITAcademy,whichwouldhousegradessixththrough12th,metwiththe VirginiaBoardofEducationStandingCommitteeonCharterSchoolsMay23toproposetheir applicationforacharterschool.ThecharterschoolwouldbelocatedintheDullesDistrictoff Route50. ProposedtoopenAugust2013,theschoolwouldbeownedbyBuchananPartners,acontracting companybasedoutofGaithersburg,Md.Thepubliccharterschoolwouldhaveaspecialized focusonscience,technology,engineeringandmathematics,orSTEM,andwouldoffer specializedclassesforatrisk,specialeducation,careerandtechnicaleducationandgifted education,accordingtotheirapplicationsubmittedtothestate. ThecharterschoolismodeledafterChesapeakeSciencePointPublicCharterSchoollocatedin AnneArundelCounty,Md. Webelievethatwewillbeabletoeducateourchildrennotonlyfortodaysjobmarketorforthe academicprogramsintodayscollegesanduniversities,butforthoseofthefuture,the applicationreads.TheU.S.DepartmentofLaborpredictsthatvirtuallyallITjobswillcontinue tohaveexcellentprospectsandprojectsmuchfasterthanaveragegrowthfortheindustry.The foundersstronglybelievethatLMITAwillbeahighlyvaluablealternativechoiceforeducationin LoudounCountyanareawhereoneoutofeverysixcountyresidentsisemployedinanIT relatedfield. TheproposedschoolwouldhavearigoroussubjectcriteriaalignedwiththeVirginiaStandards ofLearningandCommonCoreStandards. LoudounMath&ITAcademywillbeaScience,Technology,EngineeringandMathematics (STEM)publiccharterschoolinLoudounCountythataimstoservegrades6through12withan emphasisonmathematicsandinformationtechnologies(IT),theapplicationoutlines. Throughoutmiddleschool,thestudentswillbeexposedtovariousITtopicsalignedwiththe VirginiaComputer&TechnologyStandardsofLearningandwillbegivenadditional opportunitiestousecomputerapplicationsinallthecorecourses.Atthehighschoollevel,in additiontothecoreareas,therewillbeanemphasisoncertificationsininformationtechnologies andadvancedplacementcourses. NedWaterhouse,deputysuperintendentforLoudounCountyPublicSchools,saystheapproval processforcharterschoolsisachallengingonethatcantakeupto18months.But,thisproposal hasmadeitfartherthanotherproposedcharterschoolsinthecounty,whichusuallyfadeaway intheplanningprocess. Loudounhaditslastproposalforacharterschoolin2006,accordingtoWaterhouse.The processthecountyfollowsisentirelybasedonstaterequirementswithaspecificcommittee madeupofschoolstaff,businessesandsupportsystemswhoworktogether. Accordingtolegislationapprovedbythe2010VirginiaGeneralAssembly,foracharterschoolto beapproved,applicantsarerequiredtosubmitanapplicationtotheSchoolBoard.TheSchool Boardthendetermineswhethertheymeettheapprovalcriteriabeforesubmittingthe applicationtotheBoardofSupervisors. Oncethechartercommitteemakestheirrecommendationbeforethestate,wewillthenmeet withtheStateBoardofEducation,SharonInetas,whositsontheBoardofDirectorsforthe LoudounMath&ITAcademy,said.Atthatpointthestatewillmaketheirdecision.Oncethat ismadewewillcomebeforeLoudounCounty.
