History
Cranial-based healthcare had its origins in the early 1900s. Dr. William Garner Sutherland pioneered the concept of cranial bone movement while a student at Andrew Taylor Stills College of Osteopathy.

Dr. Sutherland likened the movement of the cranial bones to a respiratory one and created the terminology Primary Respiratory Mechanism to describe it: Primary: It is the system that comes first. It underlies all of lifes processes and gives dynamism, form and substance to all of anatomy and physiology. It is the spark that gives rise to the breath as it moves through the tissues. It is the foundation of metabolism. It has both an inhalation and an exhalation phase. It is a system composed of many parts that work together to create a whole greater than the sum of the parts.

As you can plainly see, Dr. Sutherland greatly appreciated the power of his new discovery. Sutherland began to research this movement and soon discovered the presence of cranial bone lesions. Sutherland felt that these lesions, fixations, cranial distortions, could interfere with the expression of the Primary Respiratory Mechanism (PRM) and in so doing would cause illness and disease. Sutherland created Osteopathy in the Cranial Field and began working with patients to correct these cranial lesions and restore proper function of the PRM. He soon met with results beyond those accomplished with traditional osteopathic and chiropractic methods aimed at correcting only the spine. Sutherland released his findings in his book, The Cranial Bowl in 1940. Cranialbased health care was born.

to the periphery of the body. Researchers have discovered cerebrospinal fluid as far distally as the tips of the fingers. The entire fascial system of the body has a relationship with the cranial Dura as well. As do the cranial nerves and potentially the hormonal system of the body through the relationship of the cranial Dura to the hypothalamic-pituitary tract.

nervous system balance. Patients report feeling much more at ease and relaxed as they go through the day. Utilizing CRT opens your practice to a wide ranging array of conditions treatable. Most practitioners report a welcome change to a much more whole- health orientation in their practices after adding CRT. Conditions are more wide-ranging and varied. They become the go to practitioner in their area with the new, specialized approach to care. This means more referrals, less practice stress, and MORE FUN!
