2 General
The following document explains how to set up a Mediatrix AP1120 or a Mediatrix AP1124 for the SIP protocol connected to a HiPath8000 system. Generally, the configuration of both devices is the same. The AP1124 device is an adapter for connecting up to 24 analog devices and the AP1120 is an adapter for connecting two analog devices. I connected the following devices to AP112X ports: Analog Phone Analog Fax Fax Modem Modem The basic configuration can be done with graphical GUI of the Unit Manager. A plenty of parameters can be set via Edit SNMP MIB, only. If in the following instruction the word AP112X is mentioned, it is meant that the corresponding configuration for AP1120 and AP1124 is the same.

2.1 Requirements
To administer AP112X devices, you need to provide a PC with an installed Unit Manager 3.2 application, which can be downloaded on the Mediatrix download page. We have a special Siemens login that will not be published in this document. The version of UM 32, I did all my testing was 3.2.12.30. In older versions, I had had some difficulties. We do not have a product key, so the number of devices, we can configure at the same time, is limited to three devices. For uploading new software to the AP112X devices, you need a TFTP server and for displaying the Syslog, you need a Syslog daemon. Both could be handled by 3Com 3cdaemon. It is needed to have an AP1120 and/or AP1124 with the SIP software installed. If you have the H.323/Cornet software on an AP112X device, which is supposed to be for SIP, you can upload the SIP software to the devices. The first installation is much easier, if you provide a DHCP server. Thus, an IP address will be supplied automatically and you can scan the IP band with UM3.2, which is administered in DHCP server. In my testing, the ComDaSys SIP proxy could be easily used for this purpose.

2.2 LAN interfaces of the AP1120 and accordingly a PC behind .

The AP1120 has two LAN interfaces. Network Computer

Connect the LAN cable coming from the companies LAN infrastructure in the Network interface of the AP1120. Optionally a PC can be connected through the Computer Interface. If this computer is configured for DHCP, it will get the same IP address as the AP1120. This is desired.

2.3 Line configuration in HiPath 8000

In desired BG (Branch), you need to provide a BGL for each port of the Mediatrix AP112X device. The parameter for VOIP can vary from the type of analog device (Analog Phone, Fax or Modem) is connected.

2.3.1 Digest Authentication (SIP Security) for SIP Endpoints

AP112X configuration:

Specify the parameters REALM, USER and PASSWORD as well as they are specified in the HiPath8000 BGL configuration.
HiPath8000 configuration:

In NMCs signaling manager configuration, Digest Authentication must be enabled before these parameters have any effect. In SMC BGL configuration the parameters REALM, USER and PASSWORD have to be specified for Digest Authentication corresponding to the SIP security settings in AP112X.

Starting the Unit Manager Network 3.2

Install the Unit Manager Network on a MS Windows 2000 or a MS Windows XP machine. UM3.2 is started by clicking on the following link in Microsoft Windows: Start/Programs/Unit Manager Network 3.2/Administrator

2.4.1 Search of AP112X devices in a certain network

To find the Mediatrix AP112X devices: Select the function Autodectect in UM 3.2. In the window arising, you can specify a band of IP addresses (e.g. 140.10.10.1 140.10.10.254). In default, each IP address will be scanned for 2000ms. This is a too long time for scanning 254 addresses. To shorten the time, which will be used for scanning a band of IP addresses, the value should be adjusted to 150ms. Press Start and wait until the scan is finished. The successfully scanned devices will be displayed in the result field. Select the desired devices by clicking Notice: Only three devices can be administered at the same time as long as Unit Manager Key is entered. In Unit Manager 3.2 the selected devices will be displayed on the right side of the windows and can be distinguished with its MAC address. Instead of the MAC address its possible to look for the IP address or any name, which is called Friendly Name. This name must be entered manually. This can be done in UnitManager/View/Options. In the following window it can be chosen from the MAC address, IP address, Friendly Name or SNMP.

In this window you see the found devices and the max. number of choused devices.

2.5 Initial startup of Mediatrix AP112X

Connect the Mediatrix AP112X device in a network which provides a DHCP server. The Mediatrix device should be supplied at least with an IP address, subnet mask and a default router. This is done after the LAN LED has stopped blinking. To find the Mediatrix device scan the band of IP addresses which could be provided by the DHCP server. If properly scanned, select the device and press OK. You will see the device in the left frame and you will need to configure the device as desired. Important is to check the software version that has to updated if necessary. Enlarge the device to do the GUI configuration. Usual configuration can be done here. Other important actions are found by performing a right mouse click on the device like: Upload/Download Configurations file Restart Device Upgrade Software Edit SNMP Important configuration like QOS, consultation key, important timers and packet length can be done via Edit SNMP only.

2.5.1 Settings in folder Administration

Here the network configuration is done and several servers are specified. Those are mandatory for syslog (Syslog daemon, where the 3cdaemon is running), configuration file (configure an AP112X with a configuration file) or software upgrade (3cdaemon as tftp server).

Erik Schuhen ICN EN HS D 325

2.5.2 Syslog Daemon Configuration

Specify an IP address on a host where the syslog software e.g. the 3com 3CDaemon is installed. If no syslog Daemon is specified by DHCP or administrator, no messages are sent. In the Messages Field, the following values can be specified: Disabled Critical Error Warning Informational debug A higher level mask includes lower level masks, e.g.: Warning includes Error and Critical. The default value is Informational. In 3com 3cdaemon you will see the syslog:

2.5.3 Server for SNTP (Network Time Protocol)

Here a SNTP server can be enabled and a static IP address can be specified for SNTP server. If you enable DHCP instead of a static IP address, it must be guaranteed that the DHCP server supports the DHCP option SNTP.

2.6 Transferring the latest software on an AP112X device.

Provide the new software for the AP112X device in a special directory. This software consists four of five files. You will get this software as a ZIP file that has to be unpacked first. In the screenshot below you will see the setting for the TFTP server and the location of the Software from the AP112X Software. Ive used the 3COM 3cdeamon as TFTP server. In 3cdeamon specify the path where the new files are located to provide it. On the AP112X devices, enter the IP address of the Software Download Server and do not enter any path, if you have the new files directly in the folder as in TFTP server specified.

Erik Schuhen ICN EN HS D 325

After doing these preparations, the upgrade can be started. For this, perform a right mouse click on the corresponding device and select in the submenu of action either Download Software (Abrupt) or Download Software (Graceful). The difference is that if there are still calls on the device and if Graceful is selected, these calls will not be disconnected and the upgrade will not be done until all call are finished. In the window arising press OK. Then look at the 3Cdeamon, there you can see the download of each file. The start of this procedure can be some minutes delayed until it will start. After successful execution the 3CDaemon looks like in the screenshot below.

2.7 AP112X configuration by using an edited config file

To make live easier you can configure a AP112X by loading an edited config file from another AP112X device. 1. Load the config file from the desired device and edit it. At least the IP address should be changed to have no duplicated IP addresses in the network (if static IP addresses are used). 2. The file must be stored with MAC address of the device to upload. (e.g. Mac000834EF02EB.cfg). Otherwise it will not work to load the file into the new device. 3. Connect the new device into a dhcp network. 4. Scan the device. 5. Via right mouse click to Device/Configurations File and press Download to unit.../ 6. Beside other setting, it has to be specified the IP address of the Unit Manager Network like shown in the following screenshot. It may be specified even more units by pressing on Set target unit...

Erik Schuhen ICN EN HS D 325

2.8 Loading the configuration from a AP112X to the UMN 32 PC

Perform a right mouse click on the before in UMN32 scanned AP112X device, in the submenu of Configuration File, you will find Upload from Unit. Click on Upload from Unit, in the arising window click on OK and wait until the next window will have arisen and check the MACaddr: Success message. On this message you know that it was done properly. In the window the OK button has to be pressed, you can even select further AP112X devices by pressing the button Set target unit. This I did successfully with three devices in all. According to the windows language the Unit Manager Network is installed on, the CFG file will be found in a folder like this: C:\Program Files\Unit Manager Network 3.2\UnitManager\CfgFile The name of the file will be named corresponding to its MAC address. Unfortunately the entire configuration will not be found in this CFG file. For example: The settings which have to be done to get a working consultation key will not be saved because its occurrence is in the Mediatrix Experimental tree.

2.9 Setting the AP112X in recovery mode (IP address is 192.168.0.1)

Unplug the AP112Xs power cable, press the Factory Reset Switch and keep it pressed while connecting the power cable. If this procedure has been done correctly, it can be communicated via LAN. The IP address is 192.168.0.1 after this reset. Change your PCs IP address to 192.168.0.10 and connect it with a small hub and two straight cables. In this mode, configuring is possible via Edit SNMP, only.

Erik Schuhen ICN EN HS D 325

2.10 Factory Reset

This is another type of Reset than described before. Press the Factory Reset Switch until all LEDs has stopped blinking. This will take about 40 sec. On the Ap1124 the switch to do that is at the front panel at the left beside the LAN connector. Network setting will be set to DHCP again. Now, the best is to provide a DHCP server in the network, the AP112X will get an IP address and the UMN 3.2 will be able to scan the device.

Erik Schuhen ICN EN HS D 325

2.11 Performing a reboot on the AP112X device

Assumed you have already scanned the for rebooting desired AP112X device with the Unit Manager Network tool do a right mouse click on the device and you will find Restart graceful and Restart abrupt in the submenue. If you select Restart graceful AP112X will wait until the last call on the device has been finished. If you select Restart abrupt the restart will be performed immediately and all calls will disconnected.

2.12 Distinguishing AP112X devices with a user friendly name

In default settings, each device can be distinguished from each other with its MAC address. Because of the fact that this is not very user friendly a so called Friendly Name can be entered instead. Perform a double click on the device and enter the desired name in the arising window. In Unit manager/VIEW/OPTIONS Friendly Names can be defined.

Erik Schuhen ICN EN HS D 325

2.13 Change of parameters by editing the SNMP tree

To start the SNMP editing, perform a right mouse click on the device and select Edit SNMP. Another window will open with the MIB tree on the left. On the right you will see two frames. On the top, the values of the parameters are edited and below there is some explanation. To see the values of the parameters automatically, it is recommended to enable the Automatic Get function, which provides seeing the value of the parameters immediately after selecting. The parameter value can be changed easily by clicking on it. So it will change into the editing mode. After pressing Enter key, the new value will be set by SNMP. In the frame at the bottom on the left, it can be followed whether the change has been made successfully or not. Use the Find function by clicking on any subfolder with the right mouse click. E.g. search for QoS and you will properly led to the position where all the QoS setting like VLAN ID, Diffserv and prioritizing can be administered.

2.13.1 Configuration of DialMaps allowing or refusing dialing of certain patterns

In this configuration, you can allow and prohibit the dialing of a certain pattern. The variable T which is used here is the time the dial out will be hesitated after the last digit has been pushed. If you would like to initiate the call immediately, you can do it with the following rule: The user has to dial # to start initiating the call in this example. Create a rule by entering x.# in Dial Map Allowed and # in Suffix To Remove. As the # has not be sent to the HiPath8000, it will be stripped off of the pattern. Another example is: If you would like to use the FAC and FDC codes of the HiPath8000 which starts with * you will have to add the rule which can be seen in the screenshot on position four. It will be executed only, if it was a in all 3 digit FAC or FDC. Erik Schuhen ICN EN HS D 325

2.13.2

Voice activity detection Silence Suppression

Thus VAD can be set up as well as the port setting like the VOIP codec or the FAX relay protocol.
G.711 VAD Settings: Disable Transparent Conservative VAD is not used. VAD is enabled. It has low sensitivity to silence periods. VAD is enabled. It has normal sensitivity to silence periods.

2.13.3 SIP configuration for each port with or without optional Digest Authentication
For SIP digest authentication, in HiPath8k the parameters Realm, User and Password have to be provisioned. To activate Digest Authentication it must be enabled in HiPath8k NMC. The configuration of AP1120 and AP1124 differs because the AP1120 has two possible ports to configure and the AP1124 24 ports.

Erik Schuhen ICN EN HS D 325

Most important is to specify the SIP proxy and SIP registrar. In this case both are handled by the ComDaSys box. Regularly the SIP proxy and the SIP registrar are the same server either the HiPath8000 or the ComDaSys. In this example a DNS name is entered which provides a DNS server.

Under Administration it distribution with DHCP or static IP Address can be selected. If the settings in this section are correct and corresponding to the BGL in the HiPath8000 configuration the ports will register. After successful registration the connected analog devices should have dial tone if hooked off.

For an AP1124 device up to 24 ports have to be administered:

2.13.4

Bulk changes with Set target unit

Another interesting functionality is to use set target unit. Here you can select all the devices, you would like to adjust the same parameter to the same value. So you can configure e.g. the consultation key for hundreds (up to 1000) of devices, if you have entered the key for the UMN tool. Whenever you see set target units, you can easily do an action for a plenty of devices at the same time.

2.13.5

Setting the RTP packet length

Start SNMP editing and change the values in the voiceCodecTable. Set the packet length time of the codec as required. Available values vary from one codec to another.

2.13.6

Country specific settings

In port settings country options has to be set. This is important to do because it effects whether an analog phone will ring or not. Also it effects on all the tones (e.g. dial tone, ring back tone) a user will hear. For Germany can be selected : - Germany1 and - Germany2. Weve made better experiences by adjusting Germany2. Per Port VOIP codec settings can be set individual.

2.14 Subscriber Services

If Call Waiting activate is desired in the AP112X a digit string for the parameter Digits to disable must be specified. This value specified here is valid for the entire AP112X. The six features seen in the screenshot can be activated or deactivated separately. E.g. Call Waiting and Second Call could be disabled. This is especially useful when transmitting faxes. For Fax devices deactivate the call waiting tone to ensure that the fax transmission is not disrupted by a second call tone. Another use case is if you want to toggle between two lines with flash key instead of performing a conference the Conference for the corresponding keys should be disabled.

2.14.1

Deactivation of Second Call

To deactivate the feature Second call the both parameters Call Waiting Second Call has to be deactivated. This feature is activated by default.

Erik Schuhen ICN EN HS D 325

2.14.2

Subscriber Services (CFW On Busy)

If AP112X CFW On busy is desired to use instead of the HiPath8k CFW features displayed Parameters must be set. Either the administrator sets a fix destination or the user will be enabled to do it himself. to allow the user to manage his CFW enable the User Activation for each port. As the user can do this activation and deactivation, its necessary to specify one code to enable and one code to disable the CFW. Note: These codes shouldnt get in conflict with the codes of the HiPath8k, especially if they are realized using codes starting with a * or a #. If both settings are made user should be able to use the feature. To prove the functionality of this feature be sure the features - Second call and - Call waiting are disabled.

2.14.3

Subscriber Services (CFW on No Answer)

To use CFW no answer of the AP112X instead of the HiPath8k CF feature set the parameters as shown in the screenshot. Either the administrator sets a fix destination or the user will be enabled to do it himself. For this, enable the User Activation for each port if self management is allowed. Erik Schuhen ICN EN HS D 325

The administrator can set the time how long the endpoint will ring until the call will be forwarded. The default value is 5000ms. If the user can activate/deactivate this feature one code to enable and one code to disable must be configured. Note: These codes shouldnt get in conflict with the codes of the HiPath8k, especially if they are realized using codes starting with a * or a #. If both settings are made user should be able to use the feature.

2.14.4

Subscriber Services (CFW Unconditional)

If AP112X CFW Unconditional is desired to use instead of the HiPath8k CFW features displayed Parameters must be set. 3.1 Ethernet Connection Speed

In the sysConfigMIB the Ethernet connection speed of the Ethernet connector in the sysConfigNetworkEthernet Speed can be set variable. The following values are available: Auto detect 10Mbs-HalfDuplex 100Mbs-HalfDuplex 10Mbs-FullDuplex 100Mbs-FullDuplex A half-duplex connection refers to a transmission using two separate channels for Transmission and reception while a full-duplex connection refers to a transmission using the same channel for both: transmission and reception. If unknown, set the variable to Auto detect so that the Mediatrix 1124 can automatically detect the network speed.

3.3.2

Bandwidth-usage

If G.711 is configured the AP1120 uses by default a packet-size of 20ms. This results in a bandwidth-usage of about 90 kbit/s. VAD is disabled by default when G.711 is used. If G.729AB is enabled, the AP1120 uses by default a packet-size of 20 ms. This results in a bandwidth-usage of about 36 kbit/s. G.729 will be used in this mode if AP1120 is the calling or called party !!!! Attention: VAD is enabled by default !!!!!! This may cause overbooking and packet-loss !!!!!! When G.729 or G.723 is used with CAC, VAD has to be disabled in SNMP, see below:

3.4 Configuring the QoS on the AP112X

QoS can be set via Edit SNMP only. The parameters for these settings can be found under: /private/enterprices/mediatrix/mediatrixConfig/qosMIB/qosMIBObejects/qosIeee8021q/ From here all parameters can be set which are necessary to have a functioning QoS functionality according the customer requirements. Once my QoS settings didnt effect until I changed the parameter. ipRoutingEnable (.1.3.6.1.4.1.4935.15.110.1.5.0) = enable Its recommended to set it generally. Note: The QoS does not work until the AP112X device will have been restarted!

3.5 Port Configuration according to the type of analog devices

3.5.1 How to prepare an AP112X port for a Fax device
If T.38 is enabled, the AP112X device will send a T.38 SIP invite to establish a T.38 connection Usually you need to activate T.38 and Silence Suppression should be disabled. If faxes shall be sent over HG3550 towards to a HiPath4000 system the parameter T.38 must be disabled as well as T.38 on the HG3550. So the fax will be sent in transparent mode. Later on when the bug will be fixed, T.38 should be enabled for each fax port. Additionally the features Call Waiting and Second Call should be disabled in the Subscriber Services. If anytime Protocol dependent can be chosen from the select menu, it should be chosen. But at the moment it cannot be set!

3.5.2 How to prepare an AP112X port for a Modem device

For connecting a modem to an AP112X port, the following settings are recommended: Codec = G711 a-Law or u-Law depending on the country T.38 = disabled Silence Suppression = OFF

3.6 Timers
3.6.1 block dialing after dialing of last digit
The connection setup is done as en-block dialing after no further digit is dialed for certain time. This time in ms can be changed via editing SNMP. The parameter is called digitMapTimeoutInterDigit. The T digit is used to express a time lapse between the detection of two DTMFs.

3.6.2 After a short activation of the hookswitch, no further call can be exexuted
If you hook on and off within a short time, you will not be able to perform a call because the maximum time for flash is set to 1200 ms in the default settings. In SNMP editing, look for parameter fxsFlashHookDetectionDelayMax and change it to value 200ms, which should be enough for most of the analog phones to perform a flash. With 200ms it should be possible to do a further connection after pressing on the hookswitch for short duration.

3.6.3 More timers

There are two additional timeouts that has to be changed maybe. The parameter digitMapTimeoutCompletion is the entire time, a user have to dial the complete dial string. The default value is 60000ms. This is a minute, which could be to short for some users. The parameter digitMapTimeoutFirstDigit is the time; a user has to dial the first digit after hooking off. The default value is 20000 ms.

3.7 Enabling the consultation key and setting the min and max flash time
To have a working consultation key, a plenty of parameters must be changed via SNMP edit. In the path Iso/org/dod/internet/private/enterprises/mediatrix/mediatrixExperimental/sipInteropMIB/sipInt eropMIBObjects the parameters SipInteropReplacesConfig = useReplacesNoRequire SipInteropReplacesVersion = replaces03 SipInteropSdpDirectionAttributeEnable = disable must be changed, After these parameters are set correctly a restart of the AP112X is required. The default value for the flash min time is 100ms. This time is too long for some Siemens phones. I got the best results by setting the flash min time to 50ms. In the following screenshots, you will see where and how these parameters can be changed,

3.8 Some user instructions

3.8.1 Performing a conference call
To initiate a three-way conference (A and B are already connected): 1. A performs a Flash-Hook. This puts B on hold and the second line is automatically connected. A hears a dial tone. 2. A dials C. A party and C party are now connected. 3. A performs another Flash-Hook. The call on hold (B) is reactivated. A is now conferencing with B and C. Notice: A conference call is possible for lines which support either the codec G.711 a-law or G.711 ulaw, only. The packetization period should be the same for all the participants of the conference.

3.8.2 Toggling exclude conference and vice verda

In Subscriber Services, the feature conference must be disabled for all the ports, if a toggling is preferred. Perform a Flash-Hook each time you want to switch between lines.
