Chamber postpones Oktoberfest

The Manchester Chamber of Commerce announced one community event will be missing from downtown in September. We moved to postpone Oktoberfest this year, said Janet Larson, chamber president, at the groups monthly meeting Monday. Due to construction sched-

uled on Main Street and the events limited exposure for downtown businesses, the chamber decided it would be best to postpone the event this year and instead shift its efforts toward working with the Kiwanis Club and its Canoe Race, held in May. Larson said the chamber would still support the Mens Club if they wanted to host a car show, which is usually held

during Oktoberfest. The Village Tap will still host its usual traditional German dinner. Combining the Duck Race with the Bed Races or the Canoe Race is still under discussion.

Other business
Village Manager Jeff Wallace said the downtown Streetscape Project is scheduled to begin after July 3.

Wallace is also still seeking comments on the draft of the Manchester Parks and Recreation 5-Year Plan. Suggestions can be submitted to him in writing. Sharon Township OKs pay changes in new budget

The Sharon Township Board of Trustees approved a $254,700 budget for fiscal year 2012-2013 Thursday. Approved in the budget was a decrease in salary for the township supervisor from $22,500 to $20,000. The board had discussed the adjustment during the previous two meetings. A change was also made to the planning commission chairs salary, who will receive $1,600 per year, instead of earning $500, plus an additional $35 per meeting. The township will also continue its search for a new lawyer, which began in April. After the May meeting, current attorney, Fred Lucas, submitted his resignation to the board. He said he would continue to be our lawyer for a short time, said Supervisor John Frey. The board agreed to continue working with Lucas until a new lawyer is selected. Interviews for candidates are tentatively scheduled for the next board meeting at 7 p.m. June 28. If the candidates are not available on that date, the board plans to have another date set and share it with the public at the June 28 meeting.

Quiz Bowl team competes in national tournament

Members of the Manchester High School Quiz Bowl team reached into the deepest parts of their brains when they participated in the National Academic Championship, held in Chicago last weekend. Im very proud of them, said coach Jared Throneberry. This is quite an achievement to make it this far. The team came out with two victories and lost two matches by

one question. Three teams that defeated Manchester moved on to the playoff round, which began Monday. Manchester competed against more than 50 other teams, trying to earn the most points by answering questions on an endless number of topics. Championship play consisted of several games, each comprised

of four rounds. Play began with a toss-up round. Another toss-up round with bonus point opportunities was next and followed by a lightning round, where each team had 60 seconds to answer 10 questions. The final round, Stump the Expert, offered more difficult questions worth more points. Team captain Paul von SpechtEmbach said he prepared for the competition by watching Jeopardy and visiting Wikipedia pages.
