CGE Renewable Energy Fact Sheet Community Choice Electricity Aggregation (CCEA) June 2012

100% Renewable Energy for Evanston! The Evanston City Council voted unanimously for 100% renewable energy with Community Choice Electricity Aggregation on April 30, 2012.
Environmental Benefits of 100% Renewable Energy CO2 emissions reduction of 284,000 metric tons, equivalent to removing 56,000 cars from the road. Reduced acid rain emission (SOx, NOx), reduced mercury emissions, and reduced particulate emissions Reduced water usage (coal plants use ~530 L per mo. for an average house, nuclear more than double). Exceeds the Evanston Climate Action Plans carbon footprint reduction target of 13% by 2012. Financial Benefits of Aggregation with 100% Renewable Energy 38% reduction in electricity supply price: 4.797 cents/kWh with CCA, 7.733 cents/kWh with ComEd. Electricity supply is only a portion of the bill. Delivery and fees remain unchanged. The average household will save more than $250 a year; collectively well save more than $7 million. Savings under the aggregation programs is significantly better than individual choice options. Renewable Energy Supply We wont be hooked directly to a wind or solar farm, so we dont have to worry about the wind stopping and well still have power in the middle of the night. Well claim credit for renewable electricity as it goes on the grid by purchasing Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). This is the same mechanism that utilities use to meet the renewable energy targets required by the State of Illinois. Other Benefits 100% renewable energy makes Evanston stand out as a progressive community Local small business benefit from lower price and marketing advantages of using renewable energy Only a handful of other communities are currently using 100% renewable energy. Process YOU DONT HAVE TO DO ANYTHING! Opt-out notices from ComEd went out in May. Just ignore them if you want to want to stay in. Aggregation savings and energy supply will start with July bill. IGNORE ANY SALES PITCHES FROM INDPENDENT ENERGY MARKETERS. Independent energy providers are scrambling to sign up Evanston residents before Aggregation goes into effect. Most of these businesses are reputable companies, although some brokers are using door-to-door and robocall tactics with incorrect or misleading information. Looking Ahead The Aggregation contract for 4.797 cents/kWh with 100% renewable energy is valid for 12 months. The City will be renegotiating at that time. CGE will again be advocating for 100% renewable energy and we need your help, become a CGE member and stay in touch!
