Breaking from the restraints of society, allows characters to develop a positive paradigm in their existing world of undesirable conventions.

Dissenting voices encompasses the ability to express and manifest individualism in a climate of oppression. Such individuals are compelled to face adversity where their beliefs resist societys values and conventions. These themes and motives are developed throughout the iconic play write Romeo and Juliet. Two star-crossed lovers are the victims of their familys feud, instead of following convention; they take their lives than be parted. Defiance of social values can entail risk and tragedy, though characters such as Juliet are willing to develop their unique dissenting voice, despite the possible consequences. Similarly, in the poignant novel The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, the audience is given the opportunity to explore the dichotomy between fate and free will of voice through the eyes of a 16 year old cancer victim called Hazel. Her diagnosis had challenged her to reconstruct her original superficial perception of society around her. As she enters a phase of introspective, she develops her dissenting attitude to disregard inevitable death and to become an individual. Her actions overcome and revolutionize her pervious views of societys values. Both texts in their respective genres allow the audience to reflect on the ethics of their own society and its influences to the construction and necessity of dissenting voices. By distinguishing the flaws in society, individuals are called to respond by developing their own sense of dissension. Juliets recognition of these aspects clearly makes her the focus of Shakespeares play. To accentuate the idea there is heavy emphasis on the transition that she undertakes from being a submissive girl to an instrument of dissension. Shakespeare also reversed the traditional gender roles bestowing her with the voice of reason and wisdom. This is evident in the balcony scene when Juliet breaks down Romeo overly romanticised notions of love described as the inconstant moon, relaying her own ideas in to their relationship. Juliets initial reluctance to accept Romeos genuine love shows that she does not want him to pledge his love in something that fluctuates so cyclically. She wants him to swear to something permanent-thy gracious self. Juliet challenges societys beliefs, by flourishing into a strong-minded woman who is in deep love with an antagonist. This accentuates her free spirit that refuses to submit to the expectations of others in a climate of gender stereotypes. Due to the prolong presence of antagonism in Verona, it is difficult for individuals to conjure the courage required to question and reconcile peace. Juliet establishes her dissension through her confession of loving Romeo; Refuse thy name... And I shall no longer be a Capulet. In this scene she is ultimately resisting the confines of her parents by offering to renounce her name in pursuit of love. She explicitly breaks the mould of her parents who offer her a prestigious marriage and secure future with Paris, by denying. Lord Capulet calls her a Disobedient wretch revealing that his life is only conditional to her compliance. Her fathers wrath symbolises societys brutality to those who dont satisfy social expectations. Romeo and Juliet poses as the futility of the aristocracy feud, where the duties and responsibilities of adulthood have been neglected. The unconditional love of Romeo and Juliet is a motif that is used to juxtapose the hate that has infected Verona. The immediate connection Romeo and Juliet forge highlights their resistance from their respective confines, and reinforces the idea that love is capable of alleviating confines and encouraging dissension. By establishing a dissenting attitude, characters are given the opportunity to consider other alternatives of escapism to the mores of societys negative cohesion. Romeo and Juliet resorted to love as a way to elude from their society. The theme of love is a transforming factor in the play which is as inextricably linked with the themes of death and violence ...my only love sprung from my only hate. this is evidence that Love is blinding and yet is as overwhelming as hate can be. Shakespeare effectively uses oxymorons to incorporate the turmoil experienced by particular characters. As Juliet is introduced to love, she becomes resolute about her future emerging as a strong and practical personality. These violent delights have violent ends This is a technique customarily used by Shakespeare to foreshadow the protagonists downfall and in this context death. Though Romeo and Juliets love supersedes values, family loyalties and rational thought, it offers them a seldom opportunity to truly live beyond the expectations of their family names.

In the play write there is significance in the crossing of stars which is fate and destiny-orientated. These ideas diminish the notion of free will and individuality that accompanies dissension. "Then I defy you, stars!" Romeo after hearing of Juliets fake death expresses his independence (which is influenced by her dissenting actions,) by saying that he is in charge of his own life and is not ruled by some predetermined course of events. This is evidence that he has gained a new disposition, where his dissenting voice is truly revealed. The world is not thy friend, nor the worlds law In the same verse, Romeo blames the world and in this context, his society for his own misfortune. The laws represent the societys values which is the foundation of convention and mores. By defying the suspicion of crossing stars and focusing on free will, dissenting attitudes are nurtured in the lives of individuals until they have the strength to challenge and confront their society; unlike fellow characters who submit to the higher power. The novel The Fault in Our Stars focuses on accusing the flaws of human nature to the destruction of individuality and voice. The process of Dissension is portrayed as a transition that allows the main protagonist Hazel, to contemplate and change her inner voice. This contemporary novel presents Death through personification as it is in Romeo and Juliet, and is used as a device to foreshadow the tragic events to occur, through powerful connections to hate, violence and passion. ...Death is a painful truth and Life is a beautiful lie... Hazel and Gus resort to love in the form escapism to mask, but not ignore the realities of cancer which brings about the predetermined winner, death; this theme is prevalent in the play write to some extent. Their inevitable deaths do not halt their loves intensity much like Romeo and Juliet not letting their families expectations intervene on their relationship-Our Fearlessness shall be our secret weapon." Hazel much like Juliet develops a strong and unique opinionated idea of society, though she has had to endure a shift in perception to develop her sense of dissension- Standing in line is a form of oppression. Both young women are not considered adults, but as their fearlessness manifest, it shows their growth in maturity and wisdom that surpasses many figures of their adult world. Gus the antagonist struggles to define the purpose of existing while in the confines of his mortality, though he finds freedom and love in Hazel, And in freedom, most people find sin. This quote is similarly mentioned by the friar in Romeo and Juliet to foreshadow that tragedy and misfortune that has been triggered by their desire to be together. References to the play are visibly seen throughout the novel. Like all real love stories - it will die with us, as it should. The components of the novel resonates the key idea of youths challenging the traditional concepts of society that encompasses the story of Romeo and Juliet. By developing a dissenting outlook, characters are able to comprehend the distinction between right and wrong; developing their own ethical and moral attitudes. In the initial stages of both plots, the heroines represent liminality. It stresses that this stage of transition is essential to developing a dissenting voice. In Death, Romeo and Juliet created, and bequeathed a legacy that brought their families together. Grief does not change you, it reveals you. The impact that would occur after their death suggests the idea that the misfortune in our destiny may constitute the faults within societys morals. There is no shortage of fault to be found amid our stars. Dissenting voices focus and advocate the aspects that make life valuable but also those that make life temporary.
