Choosing the right lining thickness
The liner must be capable of withstanding the weight of the water column; therefore the lining thickness depends on the pond size and depth. Liner thickness not less than 1 mm should be used for large deep ponds. Liner thickness 0.5 mm can be used for ponds up to 5 m and water depths up to 1 m.

GARDENA Plant Accessories Let your pond bloom

Plant Basket
Its particularly easy to arrange your pond plants if you set them in plant baskets, which have the further benefit of restricting the uncontrolled spread of roots. Article No. 7798 (without plants)

Planting Container
For planting steep sides of ponds it is best to use GARDENA planting containers; simply insert the plants right into the planting container, weight down the planting container, place it in the water and secure it with a few large stones at the edge of the pond. Article No. 7804 (without plants)

So that the soil around plant roots stays where it belongs, and to prevent undue outflow of plant nutrients into the pond water, the root balls of plants should first be wrapped in planting liners before placing in plant baskets. Article No. 7805, 80 x 400 cm

Pond water problems
Many problems can arise in pond water. The following four, however, are the ones that occur most frequently.

Algae
There are various reasons for algae growing. Firstly the trigger could be too many nutrients in the pond water. Secondly fish excretions could enrich the pond with too many nutrients. Also an increased sunlight may cause increased algae growth too.

Muddy water
The pond water may get muddy when fish feed at the bottom of the pond and stir up the water. Also small suspended particles or algae may cause muddy water. In exactly the same way as if earth gets into it.

Pond silt
Pond silt may be caused by the breakdown of plant matter. This swarms with the smallest forms of life which serve as a staple diet for fish and are also important for the processes going on in the pond. Thus pond silt is firstly necessary for the pond but secondly can upset the balance of the pond too much.

Lack of oxygen
With a large number of fish (< 80 cm or 1 kg / 1,000 l) in the pond a lack of oxygen may occur. Therefore it is very important not to put too many fish in the pond. Furthermore, too much sunlight can also lead to a lack of oxygen.

Pond water analysis
We recommend that you use the GARDENA Pond Water Test to determine the values of the most important pond parameters. The testing stick is held in the pond water for a second to measure the pH-value, carbonate hardness and the nitrite and nitrate content. The values can be determined after only one minute. Here the following values are best for the pond:

pH-value between 7.5 and 8.4

If the pH-value is too high it may encourage algae growth. If the pH-value is too low on the other hand this may lead to an increase in the nitrite content which is harmful for the pond water and its inhabitants.

Carbonate hardness (CH) between 5 and 15 dH

A buffer is required in pond water to balance fluctuating acid and base values. The carbonate hardness represents this buffer capacity. Should the buffer capacity reduce, resistance to any problems that may occur also reduces.

Nitrite (NO2-) less than 1 mg/l

Nitrite is poisonous to fish even in low concentrations and it is produced during the nitrogen cycle where dead plants, fish excrement and food remains are broken down.
