Cellulose gum as a replacement for Guar gum

The price and availability of guar gum has been the subject of great concern in the pharmaceutical industry recently. WALOCELTM Cellulose Gum can be considered as a replacement for guar gum in a variety of applications. Cellulose gum is widely and consistently available. WALOCELTM CRT A products comply with the regulations and directives in the current version of The United States Pharmacopoeia / The National Formulary (USP/NF), the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC) and the Codes of Federal Regulations of Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Part 21 CFR.182.1745 (GRAS). Applications: Cellulose gum can be considered for use in pharmaceutical applications such as syrups and liquid laxatives. Cellulose gums to consider to replace some or all guar gum in your formulation: The viscosity of a typical guar gum is between 3500 and 5000 mPas at 1%; a close match for this viscosity would be WALOCELTM CRT 40000 PA. Higher viscosity grade guars could be matched by WALOCELTM CRT 50000 PA 07. It may be that lower viscosity cellulose gums can be useful for giving different performance characteristics. There is an interesting synergy between cellulose gum and guar gum which could benefit many from a cost in use point of view. In the following chart, the optimum ratio of cellulose gum to guar gum for maximum viscosity is shown for a 1% total concentration of the combined gums.

Synergy of cellulose gum and guar combinations wrt viscosity

The synergy produced by combining the gums in ratios between 20/80 and 35/65 gives 2 + times the viscosity of just the combination of viscosity values. This suggests that if manufacturers wish to reduce their usage of guar gum without completely replacing it, they should consider evaluating a blend of guar and cellulose gum in their formulation.
