What is Voice & Communication Training for Transgender Individuals?

Adapting gender involves a shift in mannerisms, communication styles, and stance; all of which may be difficult to recognize in oneself. Training will emphasize finding naturalness in communication while gently modifying verbal and nonverbal styles. This will involve small group, one on one treatment and audio/video modeling to create awareness and promote lasting change. UK-GIVCC provides a safe environment where there is respect, acceptance, and support. UK-GIVCC welcomes individuals of any race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

What is a Speech-Language Pathologist?

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) specialize in communication disorders of speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing. SLPs hold a Masters degree, a state license, and a Certificate of Clinical Competency from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. SLPs provide voice and communication training services for persons who identify as transgender. Both male-to-female (MTF) and female-to-male (FTM) individuals may benefit from these services. UK-GIVCC will be conducted by both a certified SLP mentor and graduate students completing a Masters degree in speech pathology. Areas of communication focus include: Pitch Resonance (voice quality/richness) Intonation (the melody of speech) Speech rate Loudness (volume of ones voice) Language use Articulation (speech sound production) Non-verbal communication cues (facial expression, gestures, mannerisms)

Voice Assessment
Each individual receiving services via UKGIVCC will undergo a comprehensive voice assessment prior to beginning treatment. This will include acoustics, aerodynamics, videos of speech and reading, as well as endoscopic laryngeal imaging in a state of the art facility. A complete medical history will also be collected. This testing will ensure there are no underlying pathologies that must be corrected or treated prior to participation in the voice program. It is the mission of our clinic to provide safe and comprehensive care; which is why no individual may enroll in treatment without undergoing this clearance.
