Can you imagine how much the presidential campaigning for Obama is costing the American taxpayer every time he flies in Air Force One? Of course I may be wrong, maybe he is paying for that expense out of his campaign pocket. And if you believe that I have a bridge I would like for you to take a look at. Lets hope the expense of his getting re-elected is not being paid partly by the American Taxpayer. I would imagine he has enough money in the coffers to take care of that expense. Lets hope so!! Speaking of campaigning, have you all been doing your research on the upcoming election? Remember to be a wise voter one has to have all the information on the candidates before you step into that voting booth. you dont have time to vote properly if you dont have the information ahead of time. So get busy it is getting later than you think. It appears the Federal Government is trying to control every phase of our lives and it is working toward that goal each and every day. The latest news out of New york City is that the Mayor wants to ban the sales of sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces. It is not the role of Government to tell anyone what they can and cannot drink. you cant just pick on one type of drinks and not some of the many more that are as fattening as the supersized drinks one can buy now. It seems to me the Federal Government has far more important problems to deal with than worrying about the size of sodas the people are buying. Thats my Opinion....... Whats yours??

A Look Back
From the Archives of The Mercer County Chronicle 10 YEARS AGO (2002) Coldwater Legion awarded scholarships to these high school seniors: Russel Wenning, Celina High School and Pam Lefeld, Jenny Knapke, Rachel Giere and Jillian Hoying, all of Coldwater High School. The Celina Fall Softball League for any girl who will be in grades six through twelve for the 2002-2003 school is accepting registrations now until August 2. The league will play on six Sundays beginning August 18.
25 YEARS AGO (1987) Mercer County Joint Township Community Hospital Administrator Lysle Schmidt presented the Board of Governors with a building plan which would add a fourth floor to the hospital. Coldwater village council is still attempting to hammer an equitable solution to concerns about the intended metering of privatelyowners cisterns in the village. 50 YEARS AGO (1962) Bids will be opened on July 12 for constructions of two dams on the Water River Conservancy project, one on Fort Creek southwest of Fort Recovey and the other about six miles southeast of Fort Recovery.

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of earnings potential and a variety of investment options so its a great tool for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used properly to get the best results. Thats why you should review your 401(k) at least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed. Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help from your plan provider. But if that assistance isnt available, you might want to consult with a financial professional to make sure youre getting the maximum benefit from your plan. As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably be this: How much should I contribute? At the very least, try to put in enough to receive your employers matching contribution, if one is offered. If you dont earn this match, you are essentially walking away from free money. Beyond this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other Advertorial retirement savings vehicles you have available. Question: We are taking a family vacation. What are some tips you have for safe travel? Answer: When taking your pet on vacation with you, you need to remember the pets health and safety as well as everyone elses. You need to remember to bring all of your pets items such as leashes, collars, crate, bed/ blankets, food, water, feed dishes, and any prescribed medications. Be sure to bring enough to cover the length of your trip and a few extra days in case an emergency happens. It is also a good idea to carry a Pet First Aid Kit. Here is a link to the AVMA website that offers a checklist for a Pet First Aid Kit: http://www.avma.org/firstaid/supplies.asp. Other items for preparing for your trip are: 1. Identification a current photo and ID tags with the owners home information. It is also suggested that you make a travel ID tag with your name along with where you are staying both on your pet and on your pet carrier. 2. Microchip - If you have not already done so, a microchip is excellent way to improve your chances of getting back a lost pet. It is a small chip that is embedded in the muscle of your pet that contains an identification number that can be tracked to a registry that contains your contact information. 3. Medical Records Bring a current copy of your pets medical records that includes preexisting conditions and medications. This will help the veterinarian in case your pet needs emergency medical care. 4. Health Certificate Often called a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection, it is needed any time you take your pet across state lines. You will need to have this filled out by your veterinarian showing proof of vaccinations and that your pet is not showing signs of disease. 5. Acclimation Certificate (for air travel) This is required by some airlines. It must accompany a health certificate and must be signed by a federally accredited veterinarian. 6. Sunscreen Yes, pets can get sunburn especially pets with light skin, thin or short haircoats. Ask your veterinarian about non-toxic, non-skin irritating sunscreen for your pet. 7. Personal flotation device (for boating) You should keep a properly fitting personal flotation device (life jacket) on your pet when you are in or around water. This is important even if your pet knows how to swim. Be sure your pet is up-to-date on its vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations are required by law for both dogs and cats. Canines should have current distemper, parvo, and bordatella (kennel cough) vaccines. Felines should have distemper, feline leukemia, and feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). When traveling by air, be sure to get the airlines guidelines for pet travel. If you are traveling over 24-hours, be sure to include instructions for food or water on the outside of your traveling crate. Be sure your traveling crate fits your pet. They should be able to stand, sit, breath, and rest comfortably while in the crate. Here is another website to check on airline traveling rules www. pettravel.com/airline_rules.cfm. Ronald C. evidence of man living in Mercer County, is the Elks Antlers and Bones which were found when Cy Schwietermans employees were ditching on the Ron Stucke farm west of Cranberry. The Elks scapula (shoulder bone) had the evidence of a spear penetrating the bone. The Elk bones were Carbon 14 dated at over 9000 years ago. Thus, 9000 years ago, man was making his own flint tools and hunting elk, right here in Mercer County. This evolution of mans ability to live off of the land, and to create tools for survival is a lesson for all of us. The people who preceded us, made our lives better, by centuries upon centuries of improvements in our standard of living. Hundreds of artifacts belonging to the Collectors will be on exhibit. Modern flint knappers can see Paul Leasors exhibit of archaeological chert samples, compared with

Second, the book, Marion Township Historical and Genealogical Resources. Passport to History Series, Book XXI, will be available at the Museum for five dollars. This book contains information for doing historical and genealogical research in Marion Township. It is the size of a Passport and 52 pages in length. This is part of the letter she wrote to me: My Dad, Martin Kessen, re-buried those graves at the corner of St. Rts. 127 and 274, in 1950. I was told recently that it is not a separation of colored and white, but Catholic and Protestant. Bertha Jennings (colored) became a convert and is buried with the Catholics. She and her husband Lou had 12 children. It was exciting to read about Doris Bowles. She was in the 8th grade when I was in the 1st. We walked home from school together. She was a very smart girl. My Dad and brothers set traps for musk rats along a creek that ran thru our property. Joe Link purchased them. Joe Link had the General Store for groceries and some clothing at Carthagena. Also, his store served as a Post Office, Barber Shop and one pump gas station. They enjoyed Tyler Backs (Johnson Mech.) being swung around the house and subjected to big time wrestling moves. As the kids grew, the rough housing diminished and ultimately disappeared. Unfortunately, the talking disappeared with the play and The Bride ultimately became the Great Communicator. The pattern at our house is as follows; the phone rings and if it is one of the kids, The Bride always talks and relates any significant info to me after she hangs up. Fathers Day however, requires me to answer and talk. Change is difficult at my stage of life. I have a few positive attributes, but being a gracious gift receiver is not one of them. Invariably, I do not need something and am embarrassed about being the center of attention. I can thank or blame my genetic code or parental rearing techniques for at least some of my characteristics. My father never advanced beyond the eighth grade, but valued education and saw seven of his eight kids graduate with college degrees while never owning more than an 80-acre farm. He was the ultimate family man, but high praise for one of his children was silence. Words were generally used by him only if something was sub par. I dont feel a bit scared by this parenting technique and just hope the kids will understand at least twice a year.

The Shoemakers Wife By Adriana Trigiani Written by Skeet Wolters Library Assistant
As an introduction to my review, I add an interesting conversation with a sister at the Maria Stein Shrine. As the elevator doors open, we are greeted with the beautiful artwork of The Italian Alps picturing a mother and daughter hanging laundry on a fence. The background features the snowcapped mountains, trees and homes. It was painted by Father Tebbe many years ago and just so identifiable from this book. Sister commented on the painting and I loved how it so interconnected to Mercer County residents. The details were humorous and accurate. It is the turn of the century and the setting is the beautiful Italian Alps where a destitute widowed mother leaves her two sons, Eduardo and Ciro, in the care of nuns at a convent. She promises to return for them in one year after she earns money to provide for them. The caring nuns make a home for the boys for several years, loving them and fully caring for
all their needs including education. Telling the nuns of abusive behavior observed by the local priest they are banished from the convent and their much loved sisters. Studious Eduardo studies to become a priest while 16 year old Ciro goes to America to earn money to care for their mother. Ciro leaves behind his first love and soul mate, Enza. Unbeknownst to Ciro, Enza and her father also travel to America to earn money to build a house for their family. They are reunited after several years and the story builds. This historical novel describes the hardships and toils of those traveling steerage on the ships to America. Many who, why and how questions are answered of the immigrants. I toured Ellison Island in NyC last summer and the pictures are pressed on my memory of the hardships they went through. Trigiani has captured this progression with her descriptive words. The story centers around Ciro and

Maternal grandparents are Tony and Linda Broering of Maria Stein. Paternal grandparents are Ron and Ellen Schwieterman of Burkettsville. Mercer County Engineer Jim Wiechart is reminding landowners and farmers that corn that has been planted and is encroaching in the road right-of-ways can be a very serious sight problem on the narrower Township and County Roads. Such sight problems limiting the ability of the traveling public to see can be particularly hazardous causing the very real and dangerous potential for intersection accidents, Wiechart said. The Mercer County Engineers office requests that landowners review these intersections where they have corn planted and if they see sight problems they lessen the hazard by removing that portion of the crop that is obstructing the clear line of sight. Details regarding existing Township and County Road right-of-ways may be obtained by contacting the Engineers office.

Im not moving from the area. This is my home, Schulte added. The Mercer County Fair is about ten weeks away and we have a lot of new events and attractions scheduled. I will be available to Cara and the board to make this the best fair ever. Muhlenkamp has worked for the fair board for over eight years assisting with all aspects of the fairgrounds. She is active in the community with fund raisers and events. I want to thank the fair board for this opportunity, Muhlenkamp said. I look forward to doing what it takes to keep this fairgrounds growing. The Mercer County Fair is scheduled for August 10-16. A week ago, the entire United States celebrated the 235th anniversary of the adoption of the American flag. National Flag Day, now part of National Flag Week, is celebrated on June 14 each year in remembrance of a resolution that was passed by the Second Continental Congress on that day in 1777. The United States Army also celebrates its birthday on June 14, since on that date in 1775, Congress adopted the the American Continental Army. In 1886, Bernard J. Cigrand first publicly proposed an annual observance of the birth of the United States flag in an article titled The Fourteenth of June, published in the Chicago Argus newspaper. Cigrand spent much of his life promoting the establishment of the holiday and was living in Chicago when on the third Saturday in June 1894, a public school childrens celebration of Flag Day, took place at Douglas, Garfield, Humboldt, Lincoln and Washington parks. More than 300,000 children participated and the celebration was repeated the next year. Cigrand is
generally credited with being the Father of Flag Day, with the Chicago Tribune noting that he almost single-handedly established the holiday. Although there were numerous attempts throughout the 19th century to establish an official flag day, it wasnt until 1916 that Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that established June 14 as the day of observance of Flag Day. Further, in 1949, Congress finally passed legislation and Flag Day has been observed nationwide since. The very first US postage stamp to bear the American flag was issued in 1869 as portrayed on the Eagle and Shield stamp. There have been numerous stamps of the flag in various fashions. In 1956, a very attractive 4-cent stamp was issued with a 48 star flag. In 1959, a stamp was issued with a 49-star flag and finally, in 1960, a 50-star flag stamp was issued which is the flag we honor today. you may recall that the US Postal Service used to issue a non-denominational stamp during periods when a new rate was
first introduced. Because of the nearly year delay between when a new rate was requested and subsequently approved, it was difficult for the post office to know what denomination to print. As a result they started the A stamp which bore the image of an eagle and was equivalent to a 15 cent stamp. The F stamp had two designs one was a flower and the second was the US Flag. When it was time to issue the G stamp it was determined that it should be adorned with Old Glory as first-class postage was now 32 cents. Even the H stamp showed Uncle Sams Hat with the characterization of our flag. One of the most popular series of stamps involving the flag has been referred to as the Flag over series. There were stamps of the flag over the White House, the farm, the city and the most popular was the Flag over Porch. So popular were these stamps that they have been one of the most sought after by collec-
tors of special issues. They were the first stamps to have the year printed on them and also the first to be issued in both self adhesive and water activated formats. During one of the darkest hours in our nations history, the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, it was the image of the raising of the American flag that serves as the reminder on the Heroes semipostal stamp issue. The flag has been our number one symbol representing each of us as Americans and as citizens of our nation. Our national anthem isnt in line with God Save the Queen as many had thought it would be. No, our Star Spangled Banner yet waves oer the land of the free and the home of the brave. It has been said that if you were to look at the postage stamps issued by a country you will find out what they hold as most dear. I lost count of the number of stamps, postcards, embossed envelopes, and other philatelic products that bear the US Flag.
When people are most angry with America and wish to show their defiance, they have been known to burn the US flag; yet every casket of every person who served in any form of the military or has served as a leader of our country is adorned with the paramount symbol of our nation. It is the American flag that is given to the families of those who have served along with the thanks of a grateful Nation. May God Bless America.

contribution of the Sisters of the Precious Blood to the spiritual development of the region, from 1846 to the present. The museum is located on the second floor of the former convent building. This structure was placed on the National register of Historic Places in 1979 as part of The Land of Cross-Tipped Churches of Ohio. Included is a display and details of the Black communitys homesteads that still mark the local landscape. The Pilgrim Gift Shop offers a wide variety of items for all occasions and faiths. Gifts for Baptism,
First Communion, Confirmation, weddings and much more are offered for sale. Items are presented in an atmosphere of vibrant and artful presentation. Please note new hours for the gift shop can be found on their web site. I highly recommend the Shrine as a place to enjoy a picnic lunch on a sunny day with family, friends, children or grandchildren. Tour the grounds, visit the Relic Chapel, Museum and abundant gift shop and then take the self-guided tour with your cell phone. It is a place of inspiration and awe for all ages. For
