Background Recent emergencies and disasters highlight the need for all health workers to be prepared to respond to possible consequences of all types of hazards interacting with communities. Nurses, being at the forefront of health care services, are also counted upon to plan for and respond to emergencies and provide substantial care to individuals, families and communities. As such, it is imperative that they possess the necessary competencies to be able to respond effectively and efficiently. Nurses have demonstrated their value in a number of emergency and disaster events because they possess the knowledge, skills and attitudes that support humanitarian efforts. Nurses are sometimes involved in the care of survivors whether in hospitals or in temporary shelters where they perform health assessments; provide health services such as immunizations, health education, risk communication and even conduct monitoring of diseases of potential outbreak. However, there is a need to review the competencies that nurses should have in emergency and disaster management to be able to carry out these roles and functions individually or collectively. This training program aims to build capacity of nurses to participate actively in emergency preparedness, response and recovery efforts of hospitals and communities. Objectives of the training By the end of the training, the participants will be able to: 1. Describe the challenges and roles of nurses in emergency and disaster management 2. Perform basic emergency care and services in the pre-hospital and hospital setting 3. Discuss community health nursing interventions related to emergency and disaster management 4. Provide basic psychosocial support and mental health services for victims of emergencies and disasters 5. Analyze communication and coordination needed in emergency and disaster management 6.
