Hughie Erskine (1), who was a handsome but poor young man, was in love with Laura Merton (2), whose father had demanded 10,000 to allow them to marry. One day Hughie visited his friend Alan Trevor. Trevor (3), who was an artist, was just finishing a portrait of a beggar. Poor old man! thought Hughie, he looks so miserable, and gave the man a pound (4), which was the last bit of money he had. The beggar smiled, Thank you, Sir, thank you. Hughie spent the rest of the day with Laura (5), who was rather annoyed because he had given away his last pound, and he had to walk home because he had no money to pay for transport. That night he went to his club (6), where he met Trevor. Trevor told him that the beggar was in reality Baron Hausberg (7), whose financial skills had made him a millionaire. Hughie felt deeply embarrassed. The following day he received an envelope from the Baron (8), which had this message written on the outside: a wedding present from an old beggar to Hughie and Laura. Inside was a cheque for 10,000!

(1) Many people have mixed feelings about having a national lottery in their country. (2) Thirty years ago in the United Kingdom the Government were against the idea, whereas nowadays people win millions of pounds every week. (3) One of the strongest arguments for having a national lottery is that large sums of money can be given to good causes, such as sports facilities for the handicapped. (4) Whats more, these are often the kind of charitable projects which otherwise would not receive much funding from the Government. (5) Furthermore, money can be used for the arts, for example by building new museums or redecorating theatres. (6) Another key point is the huge amount of enjoyment that thousands of hopefuls get from participating. (7) On the other hand, many people are concerned about the possible negative effects of the lottery. (8) They point to the great number of families on low incomes who can spend an excessive amount of their money on buying tickets. (9) In addition to this, it encourages people to pin all their hopes on their dream of a big win, instead of dealing with the day-to-day problems of real life. (10) One other important consideration is the enormous profits that the lottery companies make, in relation to the money they give away. (11) In conclusion, I think it is difficult to see a clear-cut answer to this question. It probably depends on how serious a part of your life the lottery is.
