HUHS announces Trigstar winners

The Hartford Union High School District last month announced the following students as winners of the Trigstar math competition: First place: Willis Perley; Second place: Bryan Moran-Tice; Third Place: Ruturaj Vala/ Trigstar is a national math competition in which students have 60 minutes to answer as many trigonometry questions as possible. Nearly 30 students participated in this test in late April. The HUHS event was sponsored by Kapur & Associates and the Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors. Matt ORourke, an alumni of HUHS and employee of Kapur & Associates, acknowledged the top three students who competed in Trigstar and presented a plaque to first place winner, Willis Perley. Perley, a senior at HUHS, took first place in the HUHS competition by receiving 75 points out of a possible 100. His score will allow him to compete at the state level of the competition. All students who competed in this competition are eligible for a scholarship for students entering the field of land surveying.

Hartford baseball concludes season at state semifinal

A six-run outburst lifted Bay Port past Hartford in a state spring baseball Division I semifinal at Grand Chute June 12. Bay Port batters connected with four singles and a double in the fourth inning to take 6-1 lead. Hartford opened the game with a home run by Johnny Sprtel in the first inning and got on the board again in the fifth inning. With two outs and two runners on base, Sprtel singled to allow Cale Klink to score from third base. Sprtel later scored on a single by Thomas Kanke. Bay Port added another run in the seventh inning to advance to the state title game the next day. Earlier in the day Hartford beat Middleton, 5-1. Middleton scored in the first inning, as Brian Lochner tripled and later came home off a throwing error. Hartford got on the board in the third inning, as Sprtel and Klink scored off a double by Kevin Klipstein. Klipstein later scored off a single by Nolan Sweeney. Hartford added two more runs in the seventh inning, as Klink scored from third base off a sacrifice fly by Sprtel and Mile Heidecker later scored from third base off a single by Klipstein. Sprtel recorded seven strikeouts in seven innings for Hartford. Hartford finished the season with a 16-12 record. Summer baseball West Bend West had a 3-3 North Shore Conference record and a 5-5 overall mark following a 15-3 loss to Cedarburg June 12. The loss was the second conference loss in two days, as the Spartans lost at Homestead 3-2 on June 11. Slinger had a 4-4 North Shore Conference record and a 6-6 overall record following a 8-6 win at Whitefish Bay June 12. Michael Helland picked up the win pitching 1 1/3 innings in relief. West Bend East had a 3-4 North Shore Conference record and a 9-5 overall mark following a 12-2 loss at Germantown June 12. The previous day the Suns beat Slinger 2-1, with Russell Zimmerman recording seven strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings for the win. While West Bend West, West Bend East and Slinger play in the Little Ten Conference for fall and spring sports, the schools play in the North Shore for summer baseball while the other Little Ten teams play a spring baseball schedule.

Free museum admission for county residents June 20-24

Visit discoverhometown.com for daily updates on Local News

Page 3

Free admission will be available for county residents to the Old Courthouse Museum and Old Sheriff's Residence and Jail, 320 S. 5th Avenue, West Bend, June 20-24. As an added bonus, the Old Courthouse and Jail Museums will be open until 7 p.m. June 20. Special activities include trying on a ball and chain and getting an old time mug shot taken, so visitors should bring their camera. Guided tours of the Sheriffs Residence and Jail will take place from 10 a.m. to noon June 23 and 1 to 3 p.m. June 24. When Washington County residents pay their property taxes every year, the county gifts about $2 of each payment to the Washington County Historical

Societys Old Courthouse & Old Jailhouse Museums and Research Center. These free admission days give residents an opportunity to see what they are supporting with their tax dollars. Residents are asked to bring a photo id with their current address, or a utility bill with photo ID. Regular museum admission applies to non-county residents. The West Bend Co./Regal Ware Museum is also free to county residents this week, even though it does not receive county financial support.

CELEBRATE OUR VILLAGE CENTENNIAL SATURDAY, JUNE 16 SUNDAY, JUNE 24, 2012

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN STAFF WRITER

Jackson Pub celebrates Centennial along with village

Russ Hanson, a current board member and longtime member of the Jackson Historical Society. Near Weckmueller, along Main Street, there were a number of important businesses in the early 1900s, including Frank & Froehlich, a large general store and the State Bank of Jackson, said Hanson. The hotel and saloon remained in the Weckmueller family for an unknown amount of time before changing ownership to the Woldt family and being called Vern & Janes and eventually becoming the Jackson Pub, said Hanson. Jon Zandi, who purchased the business eight years ago, said the historical pub is still a go-to joint for area residents. The establishmentwhich is open seven days per weekdraws 50% neighborhood clientele, and 60% are returning customers.

Reisville became Jackson in 1889 and Weckmueller, along with the nearby businesses, continued to boom, said

we have food options, said Zandi of the tavern that also showcases live entertainment and DJs throughout the year. The bar stays involved in the community by hosting special events, such as golf and Brewers outings, and sponsoring multiple sports teams through the Jackson Parks & Recreation Department. While much has changed with the tavern since in the past century, the core concept remains the same, Zandi noted. Whether there are construction workers in town or a special event going on, the Jackson Pub is a great place to go, he said. It is a great meeting place.

Hospice volunteers receive eight hours of training and provide patients with companionship by spending time visiting with them, participating in a favorite hobby such as playing cards or reading. Volunteers are an important part of the hospice team, helping provide emotional and social support for those facing a terminal illness. Each hospice volunteer is assigned to

one patient and typically visits with him or her a few hours per week for as long as they wish. Anyone interested in learning more about becoming a hospice volunteer or other volunteer opportunities available should contact Bonnie Amerling, Cedar Community volunteer coordinator, at (262) 306-4218. The next hospice training is in June. Cedar Community is located at 5595 County Road Z, West Bend. For more information, visit www.cedarcommunity.org.

Tips for decorating with stronger colors

(NAPSI)When it comes to decorating, color experts are predicting that homeowners will be seeking out stronger colors in their search for intensity. Seeking Sensation The bold choice to turn to vibrant, optimistic colors is two-fold: a search for euphoria for some and, for others, a sense of oneself. According to PPG Pittsburgh Paints color expert Dee Schlotter, for many people, intensity is a survival strategy in times of crisis. For some, it means seeking out extremes of sensation, rebelling against the bland existence that comes with cynicism and disenchantment. For others, it means unplugging in order to reconnect with a life they feel is fleeting, added Schlotter. Sensation seekers will go for colors that stir the senses and set them in motion, amping up the chromatic density of their lives. Expect their spaces to be full of strong contrasts-heavy and weightless, shadow and light, hot and cold. On the other hand, some individuals will use strong color as a way to turn inward and unplug. Expect them to opt for quiet, understated palettes accented by deep, rich colors in order to create the space they need to take time to relax. If you are thinking of taking the leap to strong, deep color, here are some tips: If you appreciate deep, rich colors outside your home-whether in the clothes you wear or when you see these colors in restaurants or other peoples homesthen you will probably also like them in your own home. Consider an accent wall. This is a great way to get a smaller taste of strong color while still adding interest to the room. Test first. Use a large test sheet and a time testview your color in all light: morning, noon and night. Live with it for a few days to make sure you love it. Dont let timidity hold you back. Recognize that theres only one life to live and theres no time to waste. If not now, then when?
