Janine Beatson
Janine lives a fully independent life in Sheffield, and whilst she loves all kinds of visual art, photography is her favourite. Her talent and commitment have earned Janine a grade A in GCSE photography, plus an NFCE Level 1 & 2 in drawing. Currently shes studying pottery at college. Nature is a strong theme in Janines work:I like taking photos of landscapes while on holiday and close-ups of flowers. She also loves paintings of countryside, animals and water Janine is particularly fascinated by lakes and reflections in water. Telling jokes and funny stories of peoples mishaps on holiday is another delight for Janine. But the best thing in her life? No question, its Janines family. If theres any hint of a reason to arrange a family get-together, Janine is the one to organise it. I always love my beautiful family, especially I love my sister so much, she is the one I love.

Rory Davis
A trip to the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth inspired 14 year-old Rory to create Lighthouse, a 20 minute documentary film. The circular kitchen exhibit from Godrevy Lighthouse really fired Rorys imagination, and a detailed storyboard soon followed. The resulting film took two months to make. Lighthouse is the latest in a series of short films Rory has been creating over the last three years. Hes also an accomplished stills photographer, winning the Downs Syndrome Associations My Perspective photographic competition in 2010 for his Sun photo. He was a runner-up with Wire, Hurt Yourself and shortlisted again this year for Storm Coming. Rory describes the camera as a machine for my eye; film, photography and art are a central part of his home-based education. When not working on his visual projects, Rory also loves horse riding and training his dog Bruno to perform amazing tricks.

Tazia Fawley
Ten years ago,Tazia had completed her college studies and was looking for something new to engage her attention. Her brother suggested she should turn to painting, since shed always shown a talent for art. As the last decade has proved, sometimes even brothers can have good ideas. The work speaks for itself. Taz is an accomplished, gifted and commercially successful artist. She mainly works from photographs, and is meticulous in choosing just the right shot as a basis for her pictures. The painstaking approach continues from the first touch of acrylic to the final stroke, yet the end result is full of vibrancy, freedom and life. Her brother recently created a website for her tazpaintings.wordpress.com which receives many hits, and visitors are often moved to leave admiring comments. Taz has also been asked to paint special paintings for people several times, and shes always happy to oblige. Her perfectionist technique means it takes about two months to complete a picture. And with her own home studio now complete, Taz is looking forward to an ever-more productive and creative future.

Ryan Bogues
Ryan finished mainstream school last year, and completed an art class project based on the theme of doors. He took a series of photographs of doors in the old town of Downpatrick, concentrating on details such as doorknobs, fanlights and bellpushes. He loved studying Klimt too, whose propensity for wearing dresses and no underpants proved particularly interesting. Gaudis amazing stained glass, strange windows and doors also fascinated Ryan. His course work included rubbings, watercolour pencil drawings, string pictures and mosaics much of it based on an old doorknob and night bell Ryan photographed. His final piece was a pencil drawing of an ancient door, which was subsequently used for the schools Christmas card. Ryan is 17 with an (allegedly) smelly big brother called David, and two sisters, Laura and Nicki. His eclectic loves include Jaguar cars, Sonic the Hedgehog, digging the garden and mowing the grass. Then theres music its a passion for Ryan that means he never ventures out without his ipod, a back-up mp3 player and extra headphones, just in case. If sausages, potato bread and chocolate cake can also be part of the mix, thats just about perfect.

Sean Gray
The astonishing creativity of Sean Grey has its beginnings in terrifying destruction. After the trauma having his family home in the Cayman Islands ravaged by Hurricane Ivan, Sean became an elective mute. His artist sister Anne-Marie saw that encouraging him to express himself through painting could be the therapy to bring Sean back from his silence. With Anne-Maries encouragement the artworks began to flow, and Sean began to speak again. Soon Sean was producing joyful, colour-rich pictures, inspired by the vibrant life and landscape of his home. Seans latest series Splattered Rainbow revels in Seans love of colour and hue. Rainbows are common in the Cayman Islands, and the brightest shades of the spectrum seen in the animals, flowers and buildings of Seans homeland also fire his imagination. Seans strong Christian faith is the centre of his life, and this too is evident in his lucid, positive painting style. Sean and Anne-Marie have recently collaborated on work displayed in the Student Gallery, Norwich University College of the Arts, and Sean is now firmly focused on future artistic opportunities such as Heart & Sold.

David Kenward
21 year-old David lives with his family in Wheldrake,York. He received his first point and click camera when he was quite young, but Davids passion and eye for photography really developed after his 18th birthday when he received his first zoom camera. David loves to be out and about with his camera taking nature and wildlife shots hes particularly fascinated by close-up work and the intricate detail of his subjects. His skills and talent have placed him in the top 10 most highly commended photographers in the National Down Association My Perspective Competition in the last two years. In 2012 two of his three entries were short-listed in the top 25. Soon David will get to combine his three great passions photography, wildlife and travelling on safari in Tanzania. So expect more superb new shots very soon. When not busy taking photos David loves football (he has recently joined the Copmanthorpe Ability Counts Team), playing snooker and table tennis, listening to music and watching wildlife DVDs or action movies.

Christopher Lodge
44 year-old Christophers journey of education and development has taken him through many challenges, from learning to read and write (and standing up for himself in the playground!), achieving life skills at Bourneville College of Further Education to being one of the first people to live and work at the CARE Organisations Centre in Ironbridge Shropshire. Christophers parents were part of the fundraising effort to create the Centre, a place where residents could gain the training to become as independent and self-fulfilled as possible. Christopher learned carpentry skills here, but when his supervisor retired, his interest in working with wood was lost. Fortunately, Sally Rawlings at the Centre recognized Christophers potential in a different creative direction. She encouraged him to draw and paint, and subsequently helped him to join an art course at Telford College. Now Christophers talent has burgeoned, and includes bird photography. The CARE Organisation is now called Selfunlimited, and along with Christophers family, they continue to give the encouragement and support to help Christopher lead a very full and clearly creative life.

Judith McClenaghan
My name is Judith McClenaghan and I am 25 years old. I live in Holywood, Northern Ireland with my Mum. I am a happy person and I enjoy doing lots of things such as writing stories on my laptop, painting, taking photographs, listening to music, especially my favourite singers and watching DVDs. I also enjoy going to church, concerts, the cinema and coffee shops. My sister edits the stories I write. I like animals especially horses and big dogs. I dont like spiders and loud noise unless its my music playing. I would like to keep writing stories as I get older. I have some medical problems which are difficult at times.

Lester Magoogan
Lester has a unique perspective on the world which cant help but shine through in his art. His uncomplicated line drawings are full of wit and insight, often making you laugh through revealing a truth presented in a new way. So perhaps its not surprising that a meeting with Lester is just as memorable, fun and thought provoking as his art. It was his father Wesley who first recognised the early potential in Lesters work. By chance he saw a TV show where an artist was emphasizing the importance of keeping a childs-eye perspective. Its this clarity of vision which characterizes Lesters drawing, and thats what inspired his father to help share Lesters talent with the world. Since then Lesters pieces have been exhibited at Tate Modern, The Lowry and Dragons Bar in Shoreditch, along with exposure on TV in the UK and abroad. Lester has his own website too www.lestermagoogan.co.uk As Spike Milligan observed: Lesters drawings show his keen sense of humour his minimalist approach goes to show that less is more .

Robbie Hampshaw
Although he misses his family in Yorkshire, 16 year-old Robbie loves his extremely busy life at Treviglas Community College in Newquay, Cornwall. His subjects take up a lot of attention art, cookery, drama, maths, sport, and even sailing and surfing. Art is his particular favourite, because it involves photography and computer graphics. There again, Robbie loves tennis too, and travels around the country to train. He will represent the South West next year, and has his sights on joining the GB team. Recently he and his friends won a bowls trophy for the school, and medals in the regional and county competitions. Plus more medals for track events. And some for tennis. Amazingly, given all of these commitments and achievements, Robbie still finds time to create beautiful photographs of the sea and sunsets. He also loves photos of himself having fun with his family and his teachers or generally showing off his medals and his artworks. Perhaps unsurprisingly, medals also feature quite strongly as subject-matter in Robbies work.

Katie Charlotte Rickersey

Katie has a habit of surprising people, even her own family. On a holiday in North Yorkshire she visited a horse riding school, and after just one session was riding in the ring without holding on to the reins. Even the instructor was amazed, and Katie was profoundly chuffed by the experience. However, cold winter weather meant Katie has stopped riding. As an alternative a friend of the family suggested Katie accompany her to art classes. Four years later her painting lessons every Monday remain one Katies favourite things. Katie it has to be said, is not a morning person; some go so far as to say shes a grumpy waker. But in addition to sleeping and art, Katie is keen on her soaps, loves music and likes going to the gym a couple of times a week.

Fiona Stevenson
I am 33 years old and live in my own flat with support. I wanted to paint with oils and have a lovely painting teacher, Julia who helps me. I carry a book with me always to write and draw in. I also make jewellery to sell. I have worked with a printing artist Susan Alworth, who says I am a beautiful maker of marks. Fiona is a single-minded creative, and is making a career of jewellery design. Fiona attends the Social Enterprise Jewellery Workshop where shes developed a reputation for distinctive style and working very quickly when she gets going! With several commissions successfully completed, including one for a bride-to-be, Fiona continues to be very productive. She has made various pieces for shops and shows, and is probably the first person with Down Syndrome to be studying the Certificate in Embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework, Hampton Court Palace. Its a demanding course, but Fiona has already completed the first section on Jacobean crewel work.

Our son Max was born 7th October 2007 with Down Syndrome. Exactly two years later I began an MA in Art Psychotherapy. Most psychologists would agree that this sudden fixation on furthering myself was a reaction to Maxs birth,using terms like denial and distraction. On reflection, (another term) I can see exactly why I made this decision. Albeit subconsciously, I wanted to gain a better understanding of how certain individuals with various conditions are able to define their world through creative practice. Ultimately all this has led to Heart & Sold. With the help of the Barnaby Festival committee and a brilliant team, we were able to organise this exhibition for an extraordinary group of artists. And this is just the start. Were working to take things further. We want to give artists with Down Syndrome, their friends and family an opportunity to use Heart & Sold as a platform, to create, educate, inspire, sell, encourage on an ever-increasing scale, and prove that art is from the heart and should have no bearing on condition.
