Excavation shall be carried out to the lines, levels, and profiles shown on AFC drawings or to such other lines, levels, and profiles as may be directed or approved by QP. Excavated materials suitable for fill shall be transported to and placed in fill areas within the limits of the work. Excavated material unsuitable for fill shall be hauled away and dumped in approved spoil areas off site. Finished excavation slopes in the permanent works shall be free of debris and loose material. Any loose, soft or other unsuitable material which is encountered below or adjacent to structural foundation levels shall be completely removed and backfilled with suitable approved fill material and compacted to 95% of Maximum Dry Density as determined by BS 1377. Backfilling shall be done in layers of maximum 200 mm compacted thickness and up to foundation level. The limits of such works shall be as directed by QP. Alternatively, QP may instruct CONTRACTOR that removed material may be replaced by SRC concrete grade C20. When excavating to specified levels and lateral limits CONTRACTOR shall not excavate the last 150 mm until immediately before commencing the construction of foundation, structure or other items of work. Should CONTRACTOR excavate deeper than 150 mm from the specified level or closer than 150 mm from the specified lateral limits before commencing the construction work he shall excavate minimum 150 mm of material immediately before commencing the construction. This additional excavation shall be taken as excess excavation. Before commencement of any construction work all loose material shall be removed from the bottom of excavation so that foundations rest on a solid and stable ground.

SPECIFICATION FOR SITE PREPARATION AND EARTHWORKS

The position and invert levels of existing drain lines and/or services shall be recorded when discovered and shall be shown on Drawings.

3.2

EXCESS EXCAVATION Excess excavation means excavation outside the lines, levels, and profiles shown on AFC drawings or to levels of suitable material acceptable to and meeting QP requirements and engineering design requirements. CONTRACTOR shall remove and dispose of all material resulting from excess excavation and shall make good excess excavation with compacted approved fill material at his own expense.

3.3

EXCAVATION NEAR EXISTING SERVICES AND UTILITIES CONTRACTOR shall note that work is to be carried out in an operating plant area and prior to commencement of excavation the exact location and routeing of underground services and utilities shall be identified by means of test pits or slit trenches. CONTRACTOR shall make such explorations sufficiently in advance of detailed design and construction to prevent any delay to construction WORKS and enable QP to approve modifications, if any, to be made to any underground services interfering with the new WORKS. CONTRACTOR shall carefully hand excavate test pits or trenches to determine the exact locations of existing services or utilities. CONTRACTOR shall obtain QP permission before commencing any test pits and shall fence off, mark and protect them as required by QP safety regulations. Refilling by hand and compaction of test pits shall be completed as soon as practicable after the necessary information has been obtained. Where excavations approach existing pipes, conduits, cables or other underground facilities, excavation by machinery shall be discontinued and hand tools shall be used. CONTRACTOR shall provide temporary support for the existing services or utilities to prevent damage during the WORKS. Any damage to existing services or utilities resulting from CONTRACTORs operations shall be immediately brought to the attention of QP, such damage shall be repaired without delay by CONTRACTOR or some other agency as determined by QP and the cost of repairs shall be borne by CONTRACTOR.
