Reduced CO2 emissions: as a result of energy savings. Efficiency: Leds produce more light per watt than incandescent bulbs.
Applications: Leds can be used for all applications. Lack of UV means they are particularly suitable for heat sensitive areas such as museums or retail (no colour fading) and touch sensitive areas (animals or children). Colour: Leds can emit light of an intended colour without the use of colour filters that traditional lighting methods require. This is more efficient and can lower initial costs. On/Off time: Leds light up instantly and dont deteriorate due to constant switching so are suitable for PIR and photoelectric switching. Dimming: Leds can very easily be dimmed either by pulse-width modulation or lowering the forward current. Where applicable we give details on which drivers to use. Low temperature operation: Leds are not susceptible to failure due to cold temperatures so are ideal for colder climates / outdoor lighting. Lifetime: Leds have a very long life. Dependent on application average life may be between 20,000 to 50,000 hours, although time to complete failure may be much longer. Fluorescent tubes typically are rated at between 8,000 to 15,000 hours, depending partly on the conditions of use, and halogen lamps at 1,0002,000 hours. Size: Leds can be very small (smaller than 2 mm2) and are easily populated onto printed circuit boards. Cool light: In contrast to most light sources, Leds radiate very little heat in the form of IR that can cause damage to sensitive objects or fabrics.
Shock resistance: Leds, being solid state components, are difficult to damage with external shock, unlike fluorescent and incandescent bulbs which are fragile.
Considerations
Toxicity: Leds do not contain mercury or other heavy metals, unlike fluorescent lamps which require special disposal procedures.
Colour temperature variance: Due to the complex method of manufacturing white LEDs the colour co-ordinates will vary from production. For this reason the colour temperature may be different by as much as +/- 10%. However, the initial outlay is more than compensated for when you look at the energy savings over the lifetime of the fitting. With electricity costs escalating the payback periods on LED fittings are becoming ever shorter, with typical periods of between 6 months and 3 years dependent on usage.
High initial price: Leds can be more expensive, price per lumen, on an initial capital cost basis, than most conventional lighting technologies. The additional expense partially stems from the drive circuitry and power supplies needed.
Terms explained
Lumens: a measure of the power of light perceived by the human eye. Lux: is the measure of intensity of light on a surface of a specific size. LED solutions from a company committed to LED lighting.

Binning: is the term used when categorising LEDs of the same brightness and colour uniformity in their production. It is a tolerance system where LED chips from large batches are isolated because of their closeness in parameters i.e. specialist lighting will have tight binning whereas the typical commercial application will have a less stringent tolerance because of application and costs. All of our sales reps are proficient in providing energy saving calculations for large or small projects so please do ask for detailed information.
Colour temperature: is a characteristic of visible light. Colour temperatures over 5,000K are called cool colours (blue to white), while colour temperatures 2,700-3,000K are called warm colours (yellowish white through red).
