Development Econ

Final Examination 1. Relate two book reviews presented to the principles, concepts and theori es in development we studied. The book that I reviewed titled, Winning the Talent Wars: How to Manage a nd Compete in the High-tech, High-speed, Knowledge-based, Super fluid Economy con tains themes related to the principles, concepts and theories in development. O ne, it deals with the new economy where agents are free-spirited and more produc tive than they were. And so, they expect higher salary and flexible work schedul e. Thus, competence and productivity determines salary and will eventually deter mine standard of living (principle 8). Second, the book showed that markets now are more unpredictable than they were so, managers should learn to adapt to the se changes or they will end up too bloated (with employees) when in fact they ne ed to be lean and vice versa (principle 3). Third, the author emphasized that le aders, employers need to know the dream-job factors i.e. financial and non-finan cial rewards (flexible schedule and location) to retain their best agents (princ iple 4). The laissez-faire doctrine of Adam Smith is also very evident in all pa rts of the book. In a free-market of labor, agents are free to choose the work t hey would love doing and to leave if they dont like doing it anymore. Dependency theory or core-periphery theory is also shown in some of the chapters, according to the author, the employers/managers should create SWAT teams or reserve armie s (core) composed of highly-skilled and best people from different departments t o assist the not-so-good agents (periphery) if problems occur. Thus, the not-sogood agents are dependents to the highly-skilled agents. Another book that one of my classmates presented was titled , The World i s Curved. One of the themes of the book is related to principle 9 of Mankiw, where countri es in the midst of financial insecurity should not resort to overprinting of mon ey because it will only push prices to go up. In addition, Chapter 3 of the book clearly shows Adam Smiths laissez-faire doctrine, where investors are discourage d to invest if there is too much government intervention. Most investors prefer free enterprise. But, on the other side, it presented the idea that markets do f ail. Sometimes businessmen are illogical dreamers (cited from the book), so govern ment should also interfere (principle 6). This book also presented what will hap pen when price levels actually drop too low, and when central bankers become pow erless to come to the rescue, I saw here the important role of the government to save the entire economy from shrinking and I cant help but to remember John Mayn ard Keynes while listening to the reporter. Ranis and Fei Model, an economic mod el that shows how subsistence economy will transform to industrial economy, is s hown in this book. Thus, the author believed that working families wanted to be transformed from labor workers into capital workers.

2. Select one from the thesis you presented and create your own research de signs patterned to it but with different delimitation, scope or variable. Barangay Development Projects: Their Impact on Economic Development of Imus, Cav

ite by: Jenelyn E. Calvo Statement of the Problem: 1. To know the development projects undertaken by the barangay officials in the selected barangays in Imus, Cavite. 2. To know the additional taxes collected by the local government of Imus C avite before and after the implementation of the barangay projects. 3. To determine the amount and source of income of the beneficiaries before and after the implementation of the projects. 4. To determine the productivity level and employment of the beneficiaries before and after the implementation. 5. To assess the capital accumulation of the beneficiary-respondents before and after the project. Conceptual Framework: The conceptual paradigm presents a relationship between and among the in dependent and dependent variables. Independent variables- refer to physical and industrial development proj ects Dependent variables- refer to the economic development in terms of incre ased tax collected by the local government, increased income capital or investme nt, increased productivity and better income distribution. There are also intervening variables which may weaken the implementation of the barangay project. Intervening variables are the critical inputs, weak organizational struc ture, inadequate and uncertain resources, weak support and poor technological ab ility, lack of facilities as well as personnel. Scope and Delimitation: The study is only limited to the barangays of Imus Cavite and not to the whole province of Cavite. Also, the researcher chose to focus on physical and i ndustrial projects, excluding agricultural projects mainly because most of Imus Cavites farm lands are now converted to commercial and residential lands. 3. s a: What are the things you learn in the subject that can be useful to you a

teacher researcher person I learn so many things in this subject, from concepts and theories to an alysis and application. As a teacher, this subject became very useful because I am currently teaching Economics. I have to admit that there are theories and eco nomists that I am not familiar with and this subject is of great help. As teache rs we cannot share something we do not have, and so I am deeply grateful to our professor whom passionately and patiently taught us about his expertise, economi cs. I am now more knowledgeable about economics and even more determined to beco me an expert of this field. As a researcher, this subject is also very helpful and useful. Before ta king this subject, I havent thought of research or thesis because this is just my second semester in graduate class. I know I still have to go through many subje cts. But our professor imparted on us that we should already have possible topic of our future research. So, all of a sudden, I began to think of a possible top ic for research. At first, I am clueless, maybe because at the back of my mind, I find research difficult. But the passion and conviction of our professor that research is not that difficult and his other pieces of advice makes think and fo und myself determined to make a research related to economics. As educators, we need to add something to the body of knowledge, which is the very reason why we need to learn how to love doing researches and not for the completion of require ments only, that is one of the many things that I learn in this subject. As a person, this subject makes me more analytical and practical. Lookin g back to the 10 Principles of Economics, I can now explain things using economi

c principles and not simply jumping into conclusion or becoming victim of bandwa gon effect. I enjoy economics more as I learn more from our subject and professo r. It is so nice to sit and to be amazed with new knowledge that is useful, prac tical and meaningful. This subject also served as an eye opener regarding usual things that seems not to matter at all but it does! Indeed, this is a subject of utmost importance, dealing not only on concepts, theories but also about analys is and application. And even up to the last minute, this subject pushes me to th ink hard enough and to analyze more than I usually do for me to prove myself tha t I am indeed a student of graduate school!
