Adaptive Cruise Control ACC

ACC is based on an advanced radar unit with a Doppler function that compares the frequency between a transmitted pulse and the returning echo.

ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) is an advanced radarbased cruise control system that automatically helps the driver to maintain a safe distance to the vehicles in front of the truck. The system should be regarded as a comfort and safety system that further enhances vehicle productivity, particularly for long-haul transport. ACC makes it easy to follow the rhythm of the surrounding trafc. ACC enables the driver to select the time interval to vehicles that are in front of the truck. ACC then maintains this interval by automatically regulating throttle pressure and braking functions. In addition to auxiliary brakes ACC also utilizes the wheel brakes, which gives a reliable braking performance of the system. Brake blending is used and the needed mix of brakes is judged continuously. Using time as a setting for the distance offers an advantage in terms of safety. At higher speeds, the driving distance also increases. The cruise control system is based on an advanced Doppler radar. It has the capacity to detect moving objects up to approximately 180 meters. The radar function is not affected by rain, fog or darkness. However, in extreme weather conditions, the radar may become blocked by snow or ice. The driver is then alerted by a fault code in the display. The ACC works in collaboration with normal Cruise Control (CC). When there is no target in front of the vehicle the control is automatically handed over to CC and speed adjusted to set speed. As a result, ACC activation rules are the same as for CC: the speed must be higher than 30 km/h to engage ACC, and to resume ACC, after e.g. having depressed the brake pedal, the speed must be over 15 km/h.

Features And benefits


ACC automatically maintains the selected distance to vehicles in front of the truck, which reduces the risk of colliding with these vehicles from behind. By automatically maintaining a distance, the drivers stress level is reduced in heavy motorway trafc. The truck automatically follows the rhythm of the surrounding trafc, enabling the driver to relax and have a better overview of the trafc. ACC works with all types of brakes, providing high braking power, up to the max allowed retardation 2 m/s2. ACC enables a smooth driving style. Fewer accelerations/decelerations promote economical driving.

Advanced Doppler radar with aviation technology
The ACC technology is based on the Doppler effect, which utilises the way in which a sound wave changes frequency, depending on whether it is moving towards or away from the sound source. Doppler radar utilises this principle by comparing the frequency of the transmitted pulse with the frequency of the returning echo. In this manner, it is possible to determine the speed of the object that caused the echo. This enables the ACC radar to register very small differences in speed between the truck in which is it tted and the vehicles that the truck is following.

Clear information in the speedometer


The speedometer in a truck tted with ACC is equipped with an extra row of LEDs. When ACC is activated, a green LED lights at the set speed. If there are no other vehicles in front of the truck, ACC functions as a normal cruise control, and the truck maintains a constant speed. As the truck approaches a slower moving vehicle, a yellow LED lights at the selected target vehicles speed (target speed) and a green target symbol between the tachometer and speedometer is lit to indicate that a target is selected. The ACC system activates and the truck automatically reduces speed. To see the differences in speeds, yellow LEDs also light between target speed and current speed.
A green LED indicates the cruise controls set speed. The lower yellow LED indicates the speed of the ACC system selected target vehicle. The additional yellow LEDs up to the current set speed is there to indicate the relative speed difference between the truck and its target vehicle.

Different types of detection


The radar monitors a fairly narrow area in front of the truck. The scattering angle of the transmitted radar waves is +/-6 degrees. Within this eld, it divides vehicles that have been registered into two categories: detected vehicles and selected target vehicles. Up to 12 vehicles can be detected, while only one can be selected as a target vehicle. ACC activates on the selected target vehicle, and adapts the trucks speed. Vehicles in the adjacent lanes on the motorway are detected vehicles since they do not affect the trucks movement. However, if a vehicle should change lanes and move in front of the truck, this vehicle then becomes the selected target vehicle. When a target vehicle is selected it is indicated in the instrument by the green target symbol.

Collision warning included


If a vehicle in front of the truck should slow down faster than the ACC system can regulate the trucks speed, the driver is warned by lighting all LEDs red, and by sounding an audible signal. The collision warning is activated in speeds over 60 km/h even if ACC is passive but control stalk must be in position ON.
Red LEDs light up when the ACC system lacks the capacity to reduce speed sufciently. An audible signal is also given in the event of this collision warning.

Maintains speed in tight curves


The system is designed with a sensor/ gyro that monitors lateral acceleration. This essentially means that ACC senses if the truck is moving through a tight curve. The ACC systems memory is activated, and ACC maintains speed, even if the radar loses contact with the selected target vehicle.

Sets the distance using time


A cruise control sets a certain speed, whereas ACC also makes it possible to set a time interval to the vehicle in front of the truck. ACC then maintains this time interval by automatically regulating throttle pressure and the brake forces. ACC can be disengaged simply with a button on the ACC control, or by pressing the brake or clutch pedals.

Separate control module


ACC has a separate control module where signals are processed. The ACC control module is connected to the vehicles electronic system, and interacts primarily with the control modules for the engine, the EBS and the optional retarder.
