To the Reader of Seed Thoughts for Daily Planting: It should be explained that there is no particular reason why any one Book of the Agni Yoga Teaching should be assigned for study during a certain month, or for the assignment of a designated paragraph to a specified day. The following arrangement was adopted as a convenient method for the presentation of a few facets of this Great Teaching offered to Humanity at the beginning of a New Era the Epoch of Maitreya. No attempt has been made to epitomize each Book. It would be impossible to do so. However, certain characteristics have been stressed in order to show that each Book has an individual message *, though threads of continuity run through all. In reading straight through Seed Thoughts for Daily Planting, after completing the detailed work on each Book, the compiler discovered a significant pattern binding them all together: First comes The Call of the Hierarchy to the Pathway of Light. This is followed by Illumination. Then comes a sense of responsibility toward the Community. These three introductory volumes lead up to preparation for the acceptance of Agni Yoga. From this lofty peak we glimpse Infinity the Goal of our striving. Infinity is, however, too lofty a concept for our comprehension until we have learned that Hierarchy is our Link, and Heart the means of our attainment. Then we must learn about the Fiery World, and come to know ourselves as citizens of the Universe, not simply of the planet Earth. Also, we have to so refine our natures that we can respond to the sacred AUM the vibration that opens the Gates of Realization. Our concept of Brotherhood expands, including all manifestation of the ONE LIFE. These volumes are followed by Letters of Helena Roerich, a Disciple of the Great Hierarch through many incarnations, chosen by Him to transmit His Message of AGNI YOGA, or LIVING ETHICS for the NEW ERA. So, perhaps, if we learn the lessons of all the other Books of the AGNI YOGA TEACHING (thus far published) we may return to the two volumes of Infinity, better prepared to understand something of the Realm of Beauty which may be experienced even while in our earthly bodies if we remain steadfast in striving, ceaseless in service, conforming to the two great Laws the Law of Evolution and the Law of Hierarchy.

THE AGNI YOGA TEACHING or LIVING ETHICS FOR THE NEW ERA
Each is destined to receive his call. But the trumpets of angels are inaudible to the ears of those who sleep. The Call, 307 Many are called to the Knowledge, But to few are opened the secrets of Our Decisions. The Call, 382 Our Teaching is not a campaigning one; it is an instructive one, intended for those who already desire to perfect themselves. Agni Yoga, 543 I entrust the Teaching to each one who lives in all the worlds. Do not consider such a definition inapplicable. Man actually lives in all the Worlds. Each day he visits the Worlds, but he cannot be conscious of these momentary absences. Only a few apprehend the sensation of being absent. No extended time is required for the spirit, which exists outside of time. Such sensations are quite characteristic for developed consciousnesses. rhythm and a special design? Let friends sometimes reflect upon why this system has been selected! Does there not lie in it the particular problem of reacting on different centers? To cultivate a garden of beauty is permitted to all. But where are the gardeners who can judge which seed is best? We shall teach them to gather the fertile stalks. We shall pluck out the blighting weeds. And the ground where God has manifested Himself We shall adorn with flowers. But where the flowers of unity areguard their petals. January 11th 251. 312. Pupil, why think about what cannot be fulfilled? Dissipate not your force in languor of your spirit. My Lotus is a joy to those who visit My Garden. January 16th 317. Know you the truth, the great truth of the everlasting bonds between Father and Son and between the son and his son. The fruit and flowers of my Garden are given to all, and you must be the Keepers of My Garden. At My Gates I shall place you and in My Name you will proclaim. My Word be with you. January 17th 333. Remember, Art is the one vital medium of the coming culture. Through Beauty will you approach. Understand and remember. You, my daughter, saidLove. And you, my son, saidAction. The earth will sink beneath the feet of the blind, And the deaf will be destroyed. I am sending a living spring, to bathe your eyes and ears. And the Miracle will be manifested, And a Bridge of Beauty will lead you on your new path. January 21st 350. Your best endeavors are nurtured by Us like seeds. Blessed are the paths of beauty; The thirst of the world must be quenched. The miracle of New Life is obscured by tatters, yet it lives. Fear not the scum of life; When the pot is boiling, the scum swirls to the top. On the path of podvig there can be no fear, Yet the fire of the heart illumines the way of truth. Yet by night you can perceive affirmation of the days hints and whispers. For Us there has not been a more complex time than this, at the changing of races. January 23rd 357. Can the tree stand firm? Yes, yes, yesif the roots are deeply buried and unseen beneath the ground. I told you of beauty, I told you of love, I told you of action. I told you of devotion, I told you of readiness and compassion. I have opened the window for you, and shown you the battle. I explained the meaning of courage, And finally I summoned you to the Great Service. January 24th 357. And when you erect the Temple of Beauty, And on its approaches you lay out My Garden of Joy, Then name this Garden in My Name, For I told you: Children, rejoice! January 25th 360. Love is the miracle, Beauty is the miracle. January 28th 433. The Wonders of the Teacher will grow. Within the garden of love grow illuminations of the spirit. Tire Me today; burden Me more, laying on the weight of the world. Yet will I increase My strength. January 29th 433. Yet will I increase the strength of My daughter, for she goes into My garden. Urusvati, dost thou hear? The burden will blossom with roses, And the dewy grass will be arrayed with the morning rainbow. Therefore, tire Me. When I go into the garden of beauty, I fear no burden. I ponder, I ponder, I ponder. January 30th 434. From the fir tree you can learn; It is the same both in winter and summer. January 31st 449. I will gather the daughters. Let them help lay out the garden of beauty. Let them fill the garden to overflowing with new blossoms. I perceive that one can expect a rapid sprouting of life in the New World.

February Illumination, Part I February 1st V 3. Ponder each day how to fulfill My Work. Teach the inheritorsteach them beauty. Affirm their eye. Wherefore years, when one may accomplish in weeks? February 2nd VI 4. Each one has his goal. I provide the gateway fitting for the spirit. Through it one may enter into a transformed world, where the mind dwells at home in all lands. The spirit learns to fly when sorrow sharpens the eyesight. The ray of realization of the Infinite illumines the bestowed good. There is the path of Earth and the path of wings. Discern and choose. February 3rd VIII 3. Love the solitude of thought, when the sparks of understanding weave a wreath of knowledge. And as I have vouched for you, so entrust yourselves to Me. With the Hand of Power I affirm the path to the Heights. Apprehend the Good when My Envoys will bring the tidings: "He has come!" The hour of happiness is ordained, and on the way there are flowers. February 4th VIII 12. Be steadfast not only during the time of Communion with Me, but also when you are left to your own devices, because only then is the resourcefulness of the spirit forged. February 8th III 17. Resolve to act in calmness, bearing in mind that Our spring flows through you incessantly. And when you ask yourselfwhere are They Who made promises?We are standing behind you; and We rejoice, measuring the growth of the flower of your aura. We rejoice because this is Our Garden. Beyond bounded vistas the Light unites the hearts. February 9th IV 5. Simplicity, beauty and fearlessnessChrist and Buddha spoke of nothing more. And it is a blessing if the spirit vibrates to these covenants. February 10th V 8. Know how to meet the waves of life in beauty. February 11th VII 7. One must know that amidst spirituality the realization of beauty lives but rarely. A sound understanding of beauty is the rarest quality, and will be valued by the Lords above many things. Christ taught compassion, yet trampled is the law of love. Gotama, called Buddha, besought courage and energy, yet His followers surrendered to laziness. Confucius taught about an orderly system of government, yet his followers have succumbed to bribery and corruption. February 16th XII 2. The Blessed One said: "Truth is the sole source of courage." The truth correctly understood is the most beautiful chapter of wisdom in the book of Cosmos.
Illumination, Part III February 17th I 4. Benevolence and austerity are one and the same concept. Formerly We sent the olive branch of peace. Formerly the dove was Our symbol; now it is the chalice of achievement.

Yes, each age has its symbol. February 18th II 2. 2. They will ask: "What kind of heaven is yours?" Answer: "The heaven of toil and struggle." Out of toil is born invincibility; out of struggle, beauty. Yes, even today I said that I Myself come! Indeed My arrows fly into My Country, and multicolored sprouts await the gardeners. February 19th II 4. As I send you each shield, so must you make use of each moment. Not for a reward and not because of fear do you go forward, but because of a realization of the Cosmic beauty. February 20th II 16. Every moment We are ready to give the bread of life to him who will choose the same path of vigilance of the spirit. My Ray can illumine the actions of the spirit. February 21st II 18. Who then are My people? Those who do not feel any place to be their home; those who do not attach any value to objects; who love to ascend mountains; who love the singing of birds; who value the air of the morning hour; who value action more than time; who understand flowers; who display fearlessness without noticing it; who abhor gossip; who esteem the manifestation of the joy of beauty; who understand the life beyond the limits of the visible; who feel when one can partake of Amrita; who hasten to fulfill the prophecy. These, My people, can use My Power. February 22nd II 20. There is an Oriental riddle: "What is it that likes to be buried?" Answer: "A seed." Precisely, the seed of a plant must be buried in the ground, but when it begins to come to life it grows only upward. February 23rd IV 1. Prayer is the realization of eternity. In prayer there is beauty, love, daring, courage, self-sacrifice, steadfastness, aspiration. But if in the prayer are included superstition, fear and doubt, then such an invocation is related to the times of fetishism. How then should one pray? One can spend hours in aspiration, but there may be a prayer of lightning speed. Then instantaneously, without words, man places himself in continuity with the whole chain into the Infinite. Resolving to unite with the Infinite, man inhales emanations of the ether, as it were, and without mechanical repetitions establishes the best circuit for the current. Thus, in silence, without wasting time, one can receive a stream of refreshment. Only developed spirituality can uplift the human consciousness in a single sigh. February 24th V1. In Beauty will Infinity be manifested. In Beauty the teachings of the Seekers of the spirit are illumined. In Beauty we do not fear to manifest the truth of freedom. In Beauty do we kindle radiance in every drop of water. In Beauty do we transform matter into a rainbow. There is no ugliness which will not be engulfed in the rays of the rainbow. There are no fetters which will not disintegrate in the freedom of Beauty. How shall we find the words to approach the concept of the universe? How shall we tell about the evolution of forms? How to uplift the consciousness to the study of fundamentals? How to stimulate humanity to scientific cognition of the worlds?

Each realization is born in Beauty. Know how to think radiantly, and nothing terrifying will touch you. Remember, We have no forbiddances. February 25th There is nothing more beautiful than sunrise and the sun rises in the East! February 26th V 13. People are attracted by beauty and by luminous knowledge. Only that Teaching which contains all hope, which makes life beautiful, which manifests action, can promote true evolution. February 27th V 18. An unmistakable sign of Our Call is when you are borne irresistibly, as if on wings. Thus accept Our Community of Knowledge and Beauty. And be assured that, although one can search every mountain gorge, an uninvited visitor will not find the way. February 28th VI 12. If each plant has its own irreplaceable individuality, then how particularly must each human spirit be dealt with. Such tremor of sensitiveness must be a sign of Our disciples, and then without a word, through a simple contact, can light be shed. And not only by day but also by night one can be in contact and can bring the help of enlightenment. Be illumined through expansion of consciousness. As voyagers afar, accumulate knowledge through the rainbow pollen of the whole world.

New Era Community, 1926 March March 1st 4. The seed of labor withers without the moisture of reciprocity. Let us not look backward too much. We hastening fellow-travelers shall become weary if we jostle each other. We shall realize a beautiful meaning if we can introduce the great conceptfriend. Community may consist only of friends. March 2nd 8. Cooperation must be based upon sound rules. This teaches orderliness; that is, it helps the acquirement of a rhythm. Thus even in daily work are expressed the great laws of the Universe. It is especially needed to become accustomed from childhood to continuous labor. Let the better evolution be built upon labor as the measure of value. March 3rd 10. A lofty quality will enter into pure labor through love of a favorite craft. A beautiful quality will be affirmed throughout life. Nothing will remain in darkness. Ignorance will be a shameful offence. Darkness is infectious but Light is attractive. Hence, let us affirm the love of a favorite craft, which uplifts the life. Science should indicate the best quality. Science should attract the strongest energies. Let the knowledge of the spirit shine over every workbench. March 4th 12. There should be instilled respect for craftsmanship, in order that it be understood as a higher distinction. Ancient working community-guilds left testimony of their vitality. One can see how people cultivated their skills toward perfection. They knew how to shield each other and how to guard the dignity of their community. So long as people do not learn to defend the merit of their fellow-workers they will not achieve the happiness of Common Good. March 5th 22. One may reach Us only in harmonious agreement. We need not deification but a certain quality of spirit, as a lamp of concordant tension. A flickering lamp is unbearable for prolonged work. The same laws apply in everything, and according to the law of justice a flickering lamp injures itself. I counsel My lamps not to blink. The dynamo is not damaged because of the quality of the lamps, but uncoordinated voltage often results in a grievouszing! And the basic metal must be provided anew. The laws are identical in everything. March 6th 23. There is no soulless justice, but only shining goalfitness. Indeed, the glorious goalfitness cannot tyrannize, but reveals the gates of beauty. And the call of goalfitness fills the space with the rapture of victory. Events and creations constituting goalfitness are not small outworn fragments but are the precious parts of the Cosmos. March 7th 27. Pure thought saturated with beauty points out the path to truth. The interdictions and the prescripts of renunciation in the Teachings were given in condescension toward a limited consciousness. But a broadened consciousness frees man from many fetters and affirms progress. Adorned lives allow departing freely and

generously in order to return as victors. He who proceeds with a consciousness of beauty cannot be confused. Only confusion can bar the way. March 8th 27. It is not quite correct to say that beauty will save the world. It is more accurate to say that the realization of beauty will save the world. One can walk through obstacles of ugliness toward a beacon of beauty, scattering seeds without number. When one can create a garden of beauty there is nothing to fear. There is no weariness when the garden of the spirit admits the newcomers. March 9th 29. The teaching of the New world will solve all discomforts. Verily, only the shield of the Community can give meaning to the sojourn on Earth. How indescribably beautiful it is to think about cooperation with the far-off worlds. This cooperation, begun consciously, will draw into the orbit of communication new worlds. And this heavenly cooperative will broaden its possibilities infinitely. March 10th 29. Harkening of the spirit will bring the first tidings; not for master degrees, but for life which forges evolution. The Teaching can point out to the sensitive ones-on awakening, remember the far-off worlds; on going to sleep, remember the far-off worlds. March 11th 30. It is one thing to discuss abstractly distant worlds; it is another to realize oneself a participant there. Only he who has not closed for himself the path to beauty may understand how near to him is the manifestation of the far-off worlds. The ear can catch fragments of the Great Breath, but the knowledge of the spirit gives man a place in Infinity. March 12th 31. I direct you to keep the Teaching simple; not necessary are complicated expressions, for life is beautiful in simplicity. Often one is obliged to dig around a plant, therefore repetitions are unavoidable. March 13th 35. What kind of mobility can the spirit manifest on the surface of the Earth? What thoughts can it share with and upon the earthly sphere? It is asked why We waste so much energy over the Earth. Not for the sake of Earth, but for rectifying the path. When a criminal rips up the rails, often the engineer takes much time to repair them. If We could immediately transfer from the Earth those who have consciousness of the Cosmos, could there possibly be any restraining Our wish to do so? Our striving is to hasten this process. I feel that perhaps soon cosmic conditions will permit the beginning of these labors for communication with the far-off worlds. In this, all considerations of beauty, and of impetuousness in personal sending, are needed. It is true, above so-called beauty there is the allembracing concept of the betterment of the Cosmos. The rainbow ray can exceed the imagination. A silvery light marks the beginning of the rainbow. The rainbow viewed under earthly conditions resembles make-up at close range. Few can have a prescience of the supermundane rainbow. March 14th 42. The gardener knows when it is time to gather the flowers, for he planted the seeds now hidden. March 15th

44. The essence of striving to the far-off worlds is contained in the assimilation of a consciousness of our life in them. The possibility of life on them becomes for our consciousness, as it were, a channel of approach. Indeed, this consciousness must be dug through as a channel. People are able to swim, yet a considerable portion of them do not swim. Such an obvious fact as the far-off worlds completely fails to attract humanity. It is time to cast this seed into the human brain. Those who are unfortunate and without kin may more easily accept this thought. Earthly fetters are not so lasting for them. In the worst position of all are people provided with comforts. March 16th 58. You already know the usefulness of obstacles; you already know the advantage of disappointments. There can even be a usefulness of terrors. Indeed for Us and for you there are no terrors in the usual sense. On the contrary, a terror without fear is transformed into an act of cosmic beauty. Is it possible to think about beauty without a chord of rapture? March 17th 60. Much can be forgiven him who even in darkness has preserved the concept of the Teacher. The Teacher uplifts the dignity of the spirit. We liken the concept of the Teacher to a lamp in the darkness. Therefore, the Teacher may be called a beacon of responsibility. The bonds of the Teaching are like a saving rope in the mountains. The Teacher is revealed from the moment of kindling of the spirit. From that moment on the Teacher is inseparable from the disciple. March 18th 75. Truly one may look forward to the fulfillment of all prophecies. I do not see the dates being altered. Think through the film of events, and comprehend how unimportant is the exterior; only the inner significance is vital. The sowing of generations begins to sprout; the seed is beginning to shoot up. March 19th 82. On the day of beginning the new step let us speak without reproach about the great times when we learn to break away from the earth and already in the body become associated with the Higher Worlds. My Word must affirm you in the beauty of achievement. Facing the path, let us abandon the rules of actions; let us again gather the consciousness above the firmament. It is beautiful to have already the subtle body and find the spirit no more troubled before distant flights. Therefore, let us rejoice at each movement on the crust of Earth-let us learn, as it were, to fly therein. To flywhat a beautiful word! In it is already contained the pledge of our destination. When matters are grave, think about flights; let each one think about wings. I send to the daring ones all the currents of space! March 20th 84. Only a tested consciousness understands the value of the seed of reality. Rulership is not in crowns nor in crowds, but is in the cosmic expanse of ideas. Thus, the Teachings of life complement each other, having no need to attract multitudes. March 21st 91. Maintain pure air in your dwellings, project to those who come best wishes, and await Us intently. Let each community await its Teacher, for a community and a Teacher constitute the ends of one and the same column. Even in daily trifles it is necessary to remember the foundation of the house. Again we arrive at the necessity of altering the quality of the consciousness; then the transition is easy. March 22nd 97. Remember the treasure of the consciousness. of the awakened consciousness. Indeed, the rainbow of knowledge flows out of the tremor of the consciousness a visible stream from an invisible source. Through all experiences of the past and all attainments of the future, remember about the consciousness. March 23rd 104. Each school must be a complete educational unit. In schools there must be a useful museum in which the pupils themselves take part. There must be a cooperative, and the pupils must also be taught such cooperation. All phases of art must be included. Without the paths of beauty there can be no education. March 24th 108. The school will teach respect for useful inventions, but will warn against a machine slavery. All forms of slavery will be destroyed as signs of darkness. The teacher will be a guiding tutor-a friend who points out a shorter and better path. Not the process of compulsion, but the smile of summons. March 25th 110. Among the school subjects let there be taught the fundamentals of astronomy, but let it be presented as the gateway to the far-off worlds. Thus schools will stimulate the first thoughts about life in the far-off worlds. Space will become alive, astro-chemistry and rays will round out the presentation of the magnitude of the Universe. Young hearts will feel not as ants upon the earth's crust, but as bearers of spirit responsible for the planet. Let us fix our attention on schools, for from them will issue the affirmation of cooperation. There will be no construction without cooperation. There will be no security of state and union while outworn egoism holds sway. March 26th 116. Shield children from everything false; guard them against worthless music; protect them from obscenity; protect them from false competitions; protect them from affirmation of selfhood. The more so, since it is necessary to inculcate a love for incessant learning. The muscles must not gain the upper hand over mind and heart. What sort of heart takes a liking to blows of the fist? March 27th 122. Plants reach out toward the light-this law of primary consciousness is immutable. Proceed by the path of immutability and build life! There is nothing abstract, and life absorbs each thought. Therefore be realists of true reality. March 28th 152. Day and night Our coworkers are prepared for all the scintillation of the Cosmos. In their readiness they will pass invisibly by day and will find at night the radiant path. Nothing will alarm you when you are constantly alert. The character of the seeker does not permit the ship to be ice-bound. March 29th 156. It can be seen that the path of those who bear a mission is not a restful one. But the World Community is built with human hands and feet, and therein lies the beauty of the construction. Yet rarely in the cities does the messenger of the Community meet with a welcome. The very soul of the city growls at him. Indeed, the very existence of the Community is denied in the city. The very atmosphere does not permit the messenger to take any rest. Indeed, realization of cooperation and community goes on, but the thinking of the average citizen is sunk in stagnation. We summon those co-workers who know the difficulties. We call to those who will not turn back. We summon those who know that joy is a special wisdom.

We may give the most arduous instructions, but Our counsels lead to rejoicing! March 30th 228. The time has come when We shall say to each worker "You belong to Us!" The time has come when we shall reexamine the paths and signs, starting from the stellar ones; when we shall abbreviate languages and expressions of thought; when we shall reread the verses of antiquity for the last time. Without superstition must we examine the milestones of the growth of humanity under the sign of the community. We must examine how the victory of the community grew, in the kindling fires of knowledge and beauty. True knowledge and beauty contain in themselves the best community.
