A Picture is worth of thousand words Multimedia can be defined as the technology engaging variety of media like audio, video,

graphics and animation either separately or in combination using computers, to communicate ideas or to disseminate information Multimedia is any combination of text, graphics ,art, sound, animation and video with links and tools that let the user navigate, interact, and communicate with the computer

Multimedia elements are composed into a project using authoring tools. Multimedia Authoring tools are those programs that provide the capability for creating a complete multimedia presentations by linking together objects such as a paragraph of text (song), an illustration, an audio, with appropriate interactive user control.

Multimedia is interactive when the end-user is allowed to control what and when the elements are delivered. Interactive Multimedia is Hypermedia, when the enduser is provided with the structure of linked elements through which he/she can navigate. Multimedia is linear, when it is not interactive and the users just sit and watch as if it is a movie. Multimedia is nonlinear, when the users are given the navigational control and can browse the contents at will.

A system that involves: generation production/authoring tools

server design, streaming of multimedia information

representation storage transmission search and retrieval delivery

compression and formats file system design networking issues database management

A multimedia system is characterized by computer-controlled, integrated production, manipulation, storage and communication of independent information, which is encoded at least through a continuous (time-dependent) and a discrete (time-independent) medium. Based on time-dimension in the representation space, media can be

Time-independent (Discrete) Text, Graphics

Time dependent (Continuous) Audio, Video Video, sequence of frames (images) presented to the user periodically. Time dependent aperiodic media is not continuous!!
Discrete & Continuous here has no connection with internal

representation !! (relates to the viewers impression)

The development of multimedia application will be carried out using a variety of software tools. These tools include:

Presentation tools (35mm overhead projector slides) Authoring tools Scripting languages Iconic Interfaces Tools for real time video Programming languages
These tools allow the developer to carry out tasks such as : Creating scripts for presentations building links between items (Hypertext) editing designing screens overlaying video images with text and computer graphics mixing audio input from different resources
