LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
16 | SUMMER 2012
You dont have to imagine summer any more: its HEREin New
York. I always believe that a very important aspect of fashion is about
fantasydonning a garment that transports you to an imaginary
terrain of time and space. Seersucker, cotton candies, pastel-colored
balloonsall go well with a cone of ice cream on a lazy summer day
at the beach or at poolside.
Summer is also the time to pack for travels. Travels, particularly
foreign travels, are the best continuing education for adults and the
best nishing school for youth. Our pages are packed with light
outts and stylish timepieces that will adorn your energetic summer
bodies while you sip cappuccino at an international airport.
We also spoil ladies with a splendid parade of cocktail rings, which
remind us that jewelry is about joie de vivre and about the virtue of
sometimes not taking oneself too seriously.
Then there are shoes. In many cultures, feet are the terrains of
fantasy, and shoe fetishes seem universal. At least in New York, Sex and
the City legitimized shoes as the ultimate fetishes of the millennium.
YUE takes you to the raging shoe salons in our town.
On May 9, 2012, six months after the publication of the inaugural
issue of YUE Magazine, we held our much-anticipated launch party
with Lang Lang and Donald Trump in attendance. More than 375
guests (sorry that additional 200 RSVPs could not be honored due
to safety concerns) that included luxury travelers from China and
prominent Chinese Americans and New York elite were a testament
to YUEs founding philosophy of embodying the international
Chiu-Ti Jansen, Publisher
publisher@YUEMagazine.com
outlook of the contemporary China. You will have
fun leang through pages of behind-the-scenes scoops
about the party preparation and elegant images of our
distinguished guests.
Our readers have told us that they are keen on learning
about how New York style trend-setters go about their
livesprofessionally, aesthetically and personally. In a new
series of featured articles, we are taking you to the homes of
the designers and asking them to open their inner quarters.
Architectural Digest-ranked top interior designer Geoffrey
Bradeld, a newly minted honoree of the American Cancer
Societys Man of Achievement Award, takes us for a grand
tour of his famed white townhouse. In the New York social
circle, Geoffrey is known as the consummate host who
throws the most amazing themed parties attended by a
cross-section of society.
Being a foreigner has been a dening experience in
my life. After I nished college, rather than sitting back
on multiple literary awards and a roster of publications, I
came to the United States to pursue graduate studies and
career opportunities. I had to try to achieve a native level
in all aspects of English language (including writing), which was like
starting my life all over again. O Man! That was a lot of work! But I
think learning a foreign language is fundamentally a humbling and
enriching experience. This grace of humility in front of a different
culture has profoundly shaped my worldview. Thus last summer I was
deeply intrigued by the report of the Chinese bass opera singer Hao
Jiang Tian taking 20 Western performers to China where they sang
opera in Mandarin.
We are honored to feature Tian as our cover story: a xture of the
Metropolitan Opera with regular appearances in prominent theaters
worldwide, he has spent decades singing in Italian, German and
French to a world accustomed to thinking of opera only as a Western
art form. Just as Tian has learned to sing opera in foreign languages,
through Tians I SING BEIJING project his Western counterparts
have learned the challenges of singing arias in Mandarin. They
also learned that Chinese has had its own operatic tradition and
new linguistic possibilities that could open a new frontier of musical
experience and understanding.
And this precious experience of encountering the foreign will
inevitably resonate with our readerwhether you are a traveler from
China, a Chinese American, or a luxury advertiser who is trying to
attract Chinas luxury shoppersas you experience YUE and our
New World.

LETTERS FROM YUE READERS

I love YUE Magazineit is a wealth

of beautiful images and content. The
editors of the magazine must have put
a lot of heart into the creation of this
publication. My favorite section is probably
New Yorkers Shopping Secrets: A Walk Down Madison Avenue,
with its images and detailed addresses. I think that when I next visit
NYC, I will denitely take YUE along with me while I look for a
ring that suits my tastes. YUE is not only showcasing luxury goods;
more importantly, it is demonstrating to its readers a different ap-
proach to life. After all, a positive attitude toward life should not be
considered a luxury.

Lily from Exxon Mobil Shanghai

I am very interested in real estate investment trends, so I was espe-

cially inspired when I saw the article from the last issue of YUE about
New Yorks luxury real estate. It was very detailed and guided me in
the investment process. I like the type of magazine that can update
me on trends happening around us!

Shijie Gu from Ningbo

Of all the Chinese-language luxury mag-

azines, YUE is the one that I am most
willing to spend time reading. The com-
plete and accurate information, the profes-
sional spirit, and the accessible language
run through every line of the text. YUE
only uses the one simplest Chinese charac-
ter YUE [the York in New York, also
meaning rendezvous] to allow the readerswho hold style in high
esteem, who understand life, who thirst for knowledgeto meet each
other, to understand each other, to come to know each other.

He Cai from Beijing

I have been to New York many times, initially for business trips and
to give speeches, later to see my son, who is studying in the US. This
time, at the hotel I often stay at, I found YUE and looked at the in-
teresting content and information insideit planned out several pro-
grams by itself. The result was idealwith the maps and shopping
guides, I can give my friends and family all the presents and watches
I buy. Every package is taken care of! I look forward to YUE plan-
ning my next travel itinerary for me!

Ms. Zhang from Shenyang

Ligne Roset

The elegant atmosphere in the chic lounge area showcased Ligne Rosets uniquely designed
and stunning furniture and mesmerized the over 375 fashionably clad guests. The arrival of
Donald Trump, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner drew everyones attention and caused much
excitement. The trio posed for the enthusiastic guests pictures with genuine smiles.
The guests excitement further increased when concert pianist Lang Lang descended down
the escalator to join the launch party. Guests instantly became starry-eyed fans, shyly asking for
their photos to be taken with the famed pianist.
Treated to live music performed by musicians from the Julliard School, guests mixed and
mingled with friends such as Lu Hailin (spouse of the Chinese Ambassador to the United
Nations), Xia Zhishun (spouse of the Deputy Chinese Consul General in New York), Liz
Peek, Yaz Hernandez and Eleanora Kennedy (Trustees of Directors of Couture Council),
Lady Liliana Cavendish, Dame Jillian Sackler, Ren Balcer (Emmy-winning director and
philanthropist),and Geoffrey Bradeld, one of Architecture Digests top 100 interior designers.
YUE Magazine also welcomed delegations of business executives and groups of leisure travel-
ers from Mainland China.

Guests mixed and

YUE PARTIES

Throughout the evening, guests from different cultures made ca-

sual conversations while sipping Medea Vodkas exclusively designed
YUE signature cocktails and Sant Arturos luxurious wine. Senior
executives from top luxury brands also joined the festivities.
The party brought together many Chinese and New York fash-
ionistas, socialites and leaders in one room, all sharing the same joy
in seeing a new issue of YUE. Enjoying the delicious Asian-styled ap-
petizers created by Top Chefs American celebrity chef Angelo Sosa,
guests experienced the balanced fusion of Chinese and American
cultures at the tip of their tongues.
To top the night off, Ms. Jansen cut a red cake topped with a drag-
on gure and the Chinese word YUE alongside Jared Kushner,
Lu Hailin and Lang Lang. In Chinese culture, the color red signi-
es auspiciousness and happiness, whereas the dragon delivers good
luck and symbolizes originality and innovation. The combination of
the two not only celebrates another issue published in the Year of the
Dragon, but also honors YUEs continuing success.

Fashionably-clad guests lit up the room with their genuine smiles,

capturing the essence of this spectacular occasion.

The talented team at Icing on the Cake

NYC worked with YUE Magazine to cre-
ate the marvelous cake for our launch
party.
Icing on the Cake was founded by Leslie
Rivera three years ago with the vision of
creating delicious art. Several original
cake designs were created before we se-
lected the fnal stunner featuring a Chi-
nese dragon climbing up the front of the
cake. Each tier of the cake was a differ-
ent favor, from rich and moist German
chocolate cake with coconut pecan flling
to the classic crowd-pleaser red velvet
with cream cheese flling.

YUE PARTIES
ON MAY 11, 2012, YUE attended China Institutes gala to honor the recipients of the
organizations Blue Cloud Award, bestowed upon individuals who have soar[ed] amid
blue clouds due to their achievements in promoting awareness of the Chinese language
and culture.
This years recipients were Chen Feng, the Chairman of the HNA Group, and Da-
vid Henry Hwang, a Tony Award-winning playwright and librettist. Innovative rock
musician and instrumentalist Wu Tong was also honored as Musician of the Year. This
year marks the Awards 28th anniversary; past honorees include Zhang Xin, the CEO
and cofounder of SOHO China; Cai Guo-Qiang, a modern Chinese artist; and Henry
Kissinger, former United States Secretary of State. The gala serves a dual purpose: it
honors the nominees while raising funds to assist China Institutes educational and cul-
tural programs. This years gala raised over $1.2 million.
The dinner gala was held at Cipriani 42nd, where over 300 VIP guests mingled over
Ciprianis signature peach Bellinis while posing in elegant black-tie attire for the press,
including the Times own Bill Cunningham.
Notable guests included many trustees and long-time supporters of the Institute: Chien
Chung Pei and Beatrice Pei, Miranda Wong Tang and Hamburg Tang, Carolyn Hsu
Balcer and Ren Balcer, Chen Guoqing and Liu Ming, Oscar L. Tang, Dong Xiaojun
(acting Consul-General), Mitzi Perdue and Jay and Susan Goffman. Honorees Chen
Feng and David Henry Hwang both charmed the guests with their acceptance speeches;
afterward, guests were treated to a lively performance on the sheng (Chinese mouth or-
gan) by honoree Wu Tong.
The China Institute, founded by Hu Shi and John Dewey in 1926, is a cultural
organization devoted to promoting awareness and understanding of China and Chi-
nese culture through cross-cultural programs in f ields such as education and busi-
ness. YUE Magazine was the off icial media sponsor of the gala and is a strategic
partner of China Institute.

HAO
Jiang Tian has reached an incred-
ible milestone on his exceptional
journey from factory worker to
internationally-renowned per-
former. In the summer of 2011,
the Beijing-born opera singer
returned to his home city with
twenty young Western-trained
opera singers from eight different
countries. In a symbolic gesture,
the Westerners sang modern Chi-
nese opera at Beijings National
Centre for the Performing Arts
in the inaugural season of I SING
BEIJING, a Mandarin-language
opera workshop and performance
project that made history and
garnered worldwide media atten-
tion. A second season of I SING
BEIJING will begin in July 2012.
For Tian, who once had to
sneak away from his factory job to
practice his vocal skills, I SING BEIJING is an emotional opportu-
nity to join together his beloved native culture and the Western art
form he has come to master and enjoy.
Tians career took off after he landed a contract with the New
York Metropolitan Opera in 1991; he has been performing there
for each consecutive season ever since. He has achieved critical ac-
claim throughout his career, which spans over 1,300 performances
in 40 operatic roles. The most notable aspect of his career has been
his tenure at the Met, where he has sung in 26 operas over a span
of nearly twenty years. There, he has played General Wang in Tan
Duns The First Emperor opposite Plcido Domingo and is the go-to
opera singer to play Timur in Turandot. He is recognized as one of
the rst Chinese opera singers to play major roles in Western operas,
including Oroveso in Norma, Count Walter in Luisa Miller, Philip
II in Don Carlos, Le Comte in Manon, Raimondo in Lucia di Lam-
mermoor, Ramphis in Aida, Procida in I Vespri Siciliani and Me-
phistopheles in Faust. Additionally, he has played prominent roles in
many Chinese operatic performances, including the title roles in The
Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci in Hong Kong and Poet Li Bai at
the Central City Opera in Colorado. He has also starred in produc-
tions at major opera houses, including Berlin State Opera, Teatro
Colon, Teatro Comunale di Firenze, Arena di Verona, and Chicago
Lyric Opera.

196914

Surprisingly, before he became a famous opera singer, Tian hated

Western music. Chopin and Beethoven were part of his painful treat-
ment regimen for a scalp disease he had when he was seven years old.
His parentsthemselves musicianstried to explain how beautiful
the music was, but it was difcult for him to hear the magic as his hair
was being pulled out of his head.
As a child, Tian had artistic dreams of becoming a painter, but his
parents forced him to study the piano instead. I always practiced in
tears, he recalls.
In 1969, when he was 14 years old, the government ordered his
parents to leave Beijing and relocate to the countryside. While he
helped his parents pack, he recalls, they found a freestanding gramo-
phone. The government had ordered the destruction of all things
Western, but he found one record that had survived: Beethovens
Symphony No. 6.

That night was the rst [time] I started to pay attention to West-
ern music, he says. That night, he fell in love with the movement.
He was moved by the sparkle the music brought to his fathers eyes
and the way it changed his voice. His father was usually a very serious
man, but that glumness disappeared when the music came on. This
must be a powerful thing, he thought.
Beethovens Symphony No. 6 was the last piece that Tians father
conducted before the ban on all things Western would keep the mu-
sic of Beethoven and his contemporaries underground in China for
decades.
Tian spent the next six and a half years of his life working in an
electrical boiler factory outside of Beijing. He says that he became a
bit wild, returning to the piano and creating experimental composi-
tionstapping the keys with his forehead, chopsticks, anythingat
all hours of the day and night. [I was] the rst avant-garde com-
poser, he chuckles. One day, he returned to nd his piano without
a voice. A neighbor had come by in his absence and removed all the
hammers. My music could be very loud, he says.
The muted piano incident was only a temporary interruption.
Soon afterward, he was banging away on another set of keys, this
time on an accordion. He thought he would become a professional
accordion player, but a coincidental run-in with a friends neighbor
planted the seed of his future career as a powerful operatic bass. The
stranger told him that he had a natural gift and encouraged him to
take voice lessons. I dont remember his name or face, [but] he was
a sign! he says.

1977

I worked on my voice for one year, Tian recalls. Pretty dif-

cultI still had to go to the factorylong days. Two-hour ride to
the factory, eight hours work. He found it difcult to sing at home.
Often, the best opportunities to hone his newfound craft were at
work. I had to make up a story to get excusedI have to go to the
bathroomId sneak out to the open eld to practice, then I would
run back to my work, he says. I kept nding excuses to practice my
voice. Sometimes I would lie and say I was sick.
All of that sneaking around and hard work paid off. In 1977, he
nally became a vocal student at the Central Conservatory in Bei-
jing. Soon after, the rst American voice teacher was invited by the
Ministry of Culture to teach a master class for three months. She
taught Tian about Western music; among his favorites were Schu-
bert, Bach and the song Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin from the
musical Oklahoma!
After the master class, a concert was planned, and Tian would
make his debut as a soloist singing his favorite Western songs. Fright-
ened to perform a solo, he was relieved when he broke his arm days
before the concert and tried to convince his teacher that he should
not sing. The teacher told him, You just broke your arm, not your
throat and shared the story of the renowned violinist Itzhak Perl-
man, who could not walk but played the violin. Tian overcame his
setback. You have to be a ghter when you perform, he says.

He nally came to the U.S. in 1983 with only $35 in his pocket.
That didnt stop him from buying a standing pass at the Metro-
politan Opera to see his very rst opera, Ernani, starring Luciano
Pavarottiwith whom Tian would perform exactly 10 years later on
the same stage.
From New York, Tian headed to Denver, Colorado to pursue
his Masters Degree in Voice at the University of Denvers Lamont
School of Music. His scholarship did not cover living expenses, so he
found work as a dishwasher in a student union . He also worked as a
bus boy in a Chinese restaurant, but was red shortly after because
he was too slow and stood around like a manager, not a bus boy. He
completed his Masters program in 1987.
By 1990, Tian had returned to New York and realized his goal: he
was a professional musician. Soon came the biggest week of his life
thus far, with two big auditions on his plateone at City Opera on a
Wednesday and another at the Met on a Friday. City Opera passed
on him, and when he showed up at the Met, his accompaniment was
late. In desperation, he grabbed the collar of the rst available pianist
and pleaded with him to play for his audition. The pianist, although
alarmed, agreed, and together they went on the stage.
Now, Tian is helping young Chinese vocal artists hone their talent
by providing them with an opportunity he never had. In addition to
the performance series, the visiting artists of I SING BEIJING are
studying Mandarin as a lyric language through coaching sessions in
both Western and modern Chinese operatic repertoire, performance
classes that emphasis character building and vocal and dramatic
delivery. The initiative, launched jointly by the Chinese Language
Council International and the Asian Performing Arts Council, fol-
lows the tradition of strengthening diplomacy and mutual under-
standing between China and the West through the performing arts.
I SING BEIJING is the rst performing arts program embraced by
the U.S. State Departments 100K Strong Initiative, an effort aimed
at dramatically increasing and diversifying the number of Americans
studying in China.

rently lives with his wife Martha in Manhattans Upper West Side,
one block from Lincoln Center. In the summertime, Mr. and Mrs.
Tian like to sh on Lake Megunticook in Camden, Maine.
As he reects on his career, Tian acknowledges his tough and
wild ride. Highlights of his career include playing Mephistopheles in
Gounods Faust and Philip II in Verdis Don Carlos. He hopes to play
the title role in Modest Mussorgskys Boris Goudunov.

Since Sex and the City made the Cosmopolitan the must-have cocktail,
every city boy remembers how Samantha sported a massive cocktail
ring while sipping a Cosmo.
Some sources trace the origin of cocktail rings back to the days of
Prohibition, when alcohol was illegal and speakeasys were the places
for secret parties. The elite and wealthy would display their nest
fashions in underground rooms and indulge themselves in free-ow-
ing alcohol. Status-conscious women would parade around, showing
off gigantic rings while holding up an illegal and innitely desirable
cocktail!
Regardless of their origin, cocktail rings are now a symbol of free-
domfreedom to dazzle them and be yourself!

collection is a memory of the Dior boutique and the always-rened
women she encountered there as a child. When asked why she de-
cided to treat the cannage pattern in the My Dior collection, she says,
After 13 years of jewellery, it was the ideal moment to return to one
of the Dior codes. The cane-work on the Napoleon III chairs, pat-
terned after the 18th-century British cannage designs, was rst used
for Dior Haute Couture shows and inspired by the 18th century.
The unique collection revives the emblematic spirit of Dior
through its handmade rings, bracelets and cuff bracelets.
My Dior embraces a certain idea of the Dior woman, keeping in
mind the perfect design, size, volume and materials to ensure the
jewels maximum comfort. Diors nest Parisian ateliers lost wax
casting technique injects the collection that extra bit of soul only the

elegant wristwatch can be the most important accessory that glams
up your look.
This summer, look for ultra-thin watches that are effortlessly
chicwhether you want to make a splash at a poolside or look sharp
in a convertible.

to make a sophisticated style statement. Watchmakers ambitious at-
tempts to orchestrate many functions often result in a thousand or
more parts in a single case.

FASHION
writer Colin McDowell states it
best in his 300-page tome, Shoes:
Fashion and Fantasy. Shoes, once seen as a means of protection
from the elements and support for the body, have evolved since the
Renaissance and Baroque periods into symbols of status and style.
Today, even athletic footwear and boots come in ashy patterns,
designer touch-ups and sleek materials. Platforms were originally
created to keep the wearer out of the muck of medieval streets;
now, heels, wedges and platforms are credited with elongating a
gure and empowering the wearer. The right shoe can communi-
cate power, sex appeal and glamour, and there are a myriad of de-
signers from which to select, from storied cordonniers like Roger
Vivier and Salvatore Ferragamo to contemporary icons like Chris-
tian Louboutin and Manolo Blahnik.

There is no better place in the world to shop for every kind of

heel, boot, lace-up or loafer than New York City. Many smaller bou-
tiques offer rare, limited-edition or avant-garde shoes, while others
can custom-design to your hearts content while you indulge in a
glass of Champagne. Mega department stores such as Saks Fifth
Avenue and Barneys have entire foors dedicated to footwear. This
shoe salon concept is now standard for introducing customers to the
very best footwear options. YUE takes a closer look at some of the
Citys best shoe salons and what fantastic discoveries are in store.
If you know which must-have heels scorched the runways in Par-
is, then Barneys New York is your spot. The magnifcent fashion
destination sells edgy and coveted labels from head-to-toe. Their
shoe department is no different. Find an exclusive assortment of
Pierre Hardy, Casadei, Rick Owens, Giuseppe Zanotti, Givenchy,
Rochas, Anne Demeulemeester, Balenciaga, Cline, Proenza
Schouler, Tabitha Simmons and Gianvito Rossi. Many of the labels
found here cannot be easily located elsewhere in the country. For
intrepidly stylish men, Barneys should be the frst stop. In addition
to many of the aforementioned brands, they can select pairs from
Alexander McQueen, Arfango, Yohji Yamamoto, Churchs, Com-
me des Garons, John Lobb and other rare collaborations.

L
AST SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER, leading
fashion houses presented commendable options for
luxury shoppers to debate over and splurge on. High-
lights were heavy in Paris, as usual, and leading the
pack was Phoebe Philo, who had another hit collection with
sensibly structured daywear that played with boxy propor-
tions. Marc Jacobs Candy Land fun house at Louis Vuitton
consisted of pastel couture and epitomized Parisian crafts-
manship with a slew of delicate, ower-cutout dresses.
Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough for Proenza
Schouler kept things tted, girly and oral, as did
Dolce & Gabbana and Prada; the latter saw Mi-
uccia Prada clash 50s-era drive-in cinema style
with a feminine edge. Valentinos Pier Paolo
Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri took the
label to a near haute couture level with in-
tricate lace and oral gowns that were el-
egant and fuss-free. Christopher Bailey of
Burberry continued to stress the modern
womans wardrobe staple, the summer
coat, with a variety of belted trenches
that are perfect for unpredictable weath-
er. Of course, the usual legends Karl
Lagerfeld and Oscar de la Renta had
success with themes ranging from sea
elegance to masterful brocade and
tulle magic.

ON THE PLAYING FIELDS

It wasnt just American labels
that embraced our athletic side.
Upscale brands in Paris, such as
Isabel Marant and Akris, chan-
neled sportswear with techno fab-
rics and reinvented varsity jackets.
Alexander Wang smashed sports
car and street themes together for
his collection. Altuzarra, Y-3, La-
coste and Rag & Bone kept things
sporty and colorful. Sport chic is
done best in color blocks or poppy
hues for weekends and daytime.
Naturally, dressy selections can be
found on the racks by Akris, Stella

PASTELS AND FLORALS

Louis Vuitton presented nothing put pastels and ashen white o-
ral designs, while Ralph Laurens Great Gatsby collection stuck to
a owery soft palette. These calm colors keep you cool in the sun
without sacricing elegance. Often evocative of gentle romance,
pastels can be matched with black colors to add more energy. State-
side, designers Diane von Frstenberg and Carolina Herrera used
pastels throughout their collections. Alber Elbaz made his pastels a
bit glitzier with an rich sheen, a perfect way to up your glamour.

/
MIDRIFF MADNESS
Its time to show a little skin this seasonand not
in the most likely of places. A bevy of designers elected
to reveal the mid-waist with their creations. While this
look can be tough to pull off (a few extra workouts are
required), it can be sexy and tasteful. A few labels did it
best: Peter Dundas of Emilio Pucci took fashionistas on
a gypsy journey with vagabond lavishness in the form of
two-piece dresses, tulle/lace combos, and bold billowy
organza skirts. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana
envisioned a Sophia Loren al mare for their collection.
Flowery bathing suits, corsets and two-pieces came
down the runway in bold colors. Prada too played
peek-a-boo with midriff outts that had a jukebox/
rock n roll attitude.

ART DECO DECADENCE

Italian houses Etro and Gucci nailed Disco
Deco for summer 2012. This style can never get
old. Frida Giannini spruced it up with bronze-
hued dark glamour, golden gilded dresses and
jazzy patterns. Veronica Etro kept things on the
lighter side, with allusions to the music of the 30s, colorful
Deco designs and apper frills. Ralph Lauren, Christian
Dior, Marchesa, Stefano Pilati of Yves Saint Laurent and
other luxury brands introduced collections full of fringe,
feathers, Champagne tones, plunging V-necks and ornate
Deco embellishments. Opulent Art Deco chic is worn best
for special events and evening festivities; pair it with some
art nouveau jewelry for added are.

UNDER THE SEA

Karl Lagerfeld may be getting all
the credit for his Chanel pearl and
water spectacle at Le Grand Pal-
ais in Paris, but numerous other
designers have embraced the opal,
translucent and seaside trend. Sarah
Burton of Alexander McQueen painstak-
ingly crafted gowns that had a coral/sea
creature element. Some looks resembled
seaweed, while other had a glossy, metallic
sh-scale nish. Riccardo Tisci referenced
sea life with exotic skins such as stingray,
eel and polished leathers. The sequins and
folds on his pieces gave the appearance of
kelp and crustaceans, while gigantic shark
tooth necklaces added some attitude. Keep
your outt tame with pearl and pastel sea
shades for daytime and stick with ashy
numbers for night. For those who brave the
ocean waters, the one-piece bathing suit
is le look du jour. Michael Kors, Norma
Kamali and Chanel all offered fantastic
options.

1997

In 1997, Silvia Venturini Fendi introduced a deceptively small,

simple archetype handbag to be carried under the arm like the French
loaf, giving it the name La Baguette. Its solid value of craftsman-
ship symbolized the handbags connection to tradition, individual
ownership and luxury. The Baguette thus started the it-bag trend,
instantly becoming one of the most popular and signicant acces-
sories of the decade. It revitalized the Fendi brand by creating a time-
less, enduring style icon that, to this day, women all over the world
still covet and collect with a passion. Within fteen years, Fendis
Baguette handbags have become a true accessories phenomenon.
The current wave of Baguette popularity features six Fendi Ba-
guette handbags, all of which are personal favorites of Silvia Venturi-
ni Fendi. Each handbags distinctive, simple and basic rectangular
classic shape is a canvas for wild creativity. In blending tradition with
innovation, the Fendi Baguette handbag collection allows for hun-
dreds of possible variations in materials and visual interpretations. It
ranges from simple, understated handbags to handbags that feature
unique or deluxe materials such as embroidery, sequins, beading,
leather, fur or crocodile skin.

20126

The Fendi Baguette handbag is the denition of

Italian luxury, and fashionistas around the world
have long considered them must-have fashion ac-
cessories. The Baguette handbags are usually seen
discreetly tucked under the arms of debutantes
and red-carpet celebrities. Fendi will be celebrat-
ing the Baguette handbags 15th anniversary in
June 2012 by reissuing six of its most memorable
Baguette handbags and launching its rst ever Ba-
guette Book.

To highlight the rise of another Baguette renaissance, Fendis

launch of the 344-page actual Baguette-sized book celebrates the
Fendi Baguette handbags unique craftsmanship, artisanship, con-
noisseurship, style and design. The Baguette Book embodies the
handbags style and permanence, establishing itself to be as essential
as the beloved Fendi Baguette handbag itself.
With 250 full-color photos, this one-of-a-kind catalogue rai-
sonn is a dedicated selection from fteen years of the most vintage
and unique Baguettes. The Baguette Book features a range of limited
-edition Baguettes and exceptional artist Baguettes, including inter-
pretations from Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Enoc Perez and Rachel
Feinstein. Like a journey through memory, the Baguette Book maps
out and recalls the growth of the Baguette collection since its birth.
Personal thoughts on the Baguette collection from pivotal journalists
and curators, such as Banana Yoshimoto, Paola Antonelli and Sarah
Jessica Parker, fully support the idea that the Baguette is an enduring
style icon that blurs the line between art and fashion.
The Fendi Baguette is a true representation of a fashion phe-
nomenon, beginning in 1997 and continuing to ourish till this day.
In the last 15 years, Fendi has produced over 700 styles of Baguette
handbags. The Fendi Baguette Book is an archival compilation of
these treasures and is ultimately a pictorial story of Fendis traditional
values of craftsmanship, style and designs.

SEERSUCKER
Originally pioneered by New Orleans-based clothier Haspel over
100 years ago, the seersucker suit reinvented preppy summer com-
fort. Early endorsers include Humphrey Bogart, Carey Grant and
Franklin Roosevelt. The lightweight, Indian material is durable and
breathable, and it keeps you cool in the sultry weather. Traditionally
crafted in an array of pastels and sky blues, seersucker is a go-to for
dapper men. It easily can be dressed up with a shirt and tie/bowtie in
the ofce or at that special wedding. Nowadays, labels such as Brooks
Brothers, GANT, J.Crew, Ralph Lauren, and Tommy Hilger list
the seersucker as an American summer staple.

SWIM TRUNKS
For summer 2012, designers kept bathing
trunks short. While many men will ap-
proach above-knee swimming trunks
with trepidation, they need not be fearful.
If you have a streamlined svelte gure,
go for broke and keep things short and
a bit more tted. Shorter trunks can
elongate the body, giving you a more
slender look. (Look no further than the
runway at Dsquared2!) Even select-
ing a pair that drops to the knees can
be an advantage. 2012s swimwear is
bursting with oral avor and tropi-
cal hues. Have some fun!

SUMMER PLAIDS
Go easy on the pinstripes, because the pattern du jour for suits is
without a doubt plaids. From tiny checks to full-sized tartan patters,
this traditional look will remain king through winter. For summer,
incorporate gingham, cotton plaids and lightweight check materials.
Etro, Umit Benan and Canali had subtle plaids that were elegant in
summer cashmere and silk, whereas Frida Giannini of Gucci gave
her checks rockstar appeal. Raf Simons played with a variety of
pattern congurations on his plaid-lled collection shown in Paris.
Walter Van Beirendonck and Jean Paul Gaultier also kept Parisian
plaids alive and well with their collections. Ermenegildo Zegna in-
corporated plaids and stripes on the most subtle of scales on a few of
its ne-tailored suits and jackets.

CARGO FEVER
Cargo pants and shorts, popular in the 90s and 00s, are creeping
back into style. Michael Kors cargo-wearing man was on safari.
The designer presented olive and tan shorts and pants made of airy
fabrics that worked well. Dress your cargos up with a button-up and
tie or keep things easy and casual by pairing them with a casual
tee-shirt and blazer. While all those pockets can be overwhelm-
ing, select a pair that ts slimly to the body to avoid looking bulky.
Stefano Pilati of Yves Saint Laurent provided a prime example of
cargo-military styles that maintained a sleek line.
Shorts as a whole were front and center on the runway, with some
of the worlds most esteemed labels sending out dozens of looks. In
Milan, Marni led the pack, and in Paris, Lanvin Hommes Lucas
Ossendrijver and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garons included
short-shorts.

T
HE MENTION OF GEOFFREY BRADFIELD TO ANY NEW YORK interior
design insider sparks depictions of opulent and fanciful spaces. In a career spanning
some thirty-odd years, he has carved out his own niche in the world of luxury inte-
rior design. It is perhaps inconceivable that Mr. Bradeld, who grew up on a farm in
rural South Africa, wound up dining with European royalty, renovating King Husseins massive
estate in Maryland and sitting on the panel of judges for the Chinas Most Successful Designs
Awards Competition. Mr. Bradeld tells YUE over coffee at his iconic townhouse on Manhat-
tans Upper East Side that he believes a key to his success is enjoying the challenge of bringing
individual meaning to a room. His skill at blending elegance and modernity while valuing local
resources and inuences is rare, and he carefully avoids conforming to a cookie-cutter style.
Geoffrey Bradeld began his young-adult life touring Asia, Oceania, Europe and America
while serving for South Africas regimental army. After he fullled his requirements, he began
working in interior design, and his fascination with design and art grew. For his rst signi-
cant project, he updated the Johannesburg apartment of South African theatre legend Pieter
Toerien. That was at the youthful age of 23. It garnered me a lot of attention. Of course,
everything is relative and I was swimming in a very small pond, explained the designer. It
gave me enormous condence.

Bradeld left South
Africa in 1977 to launch
his career in Manhattan,
a place in which he had
longed to live since his
teens and which be pivotal
to his success. Whilst do-
ing my army training, on
a weekend pass, I saw the
lm Breakfast at Tiffanys.
It was Patricia Neals role
of the rich socialite and
her kept boy, George Pep-
pard. Theres something
so extravagant about the
scene set in that exqui-
site love nest and how she
played it outit made me
want to live in a city of that
sophistication, commented the designer. Making waves in New
York with its stiff competition and social distractions wasnt easy,
but his career soon took off.
In the 80s, Bradeld established his own rm. He soon at-
tracted Fortune 500 clients and oversaw massive refurbishments
at royal residences.
Naturally, there were disasters along the way. Bradeld recalled
a time when his client, the renowned entrepreneur and collector
Frederick Weisman, insisted that a newly purchased Noguchi
granite coffee table be hoisted by crane to a sixth-oor lounge.
I worked tirelessly all day to achieve this complicated maneuver
and ready the place for cocktails, which would be followed by yet
another night at Studio 54. Guests began to arrive, among them
[Andy] Warhol, who by then was a ubiquitous habitu of the party
circuit. When the feat was completed, I xed myself a well-de-
served drink and sank into a sofa. To my horror, I looked down to
witness a black line racing toward me at some speed, like a snake
slithering across the marble surface. The staggering weight of the
granite table had sent a serious crack through the oor! We had to
vacate the building post haste.

Mishaps notwithstanding, Bradeld can list dozens of ex-

ceptional experiences. He worked for the late Queen Mother of
England and executed the overhaul of the Gertrude Vanderbilt
Whitney estate in Old Westbury, Long Island. More recently, he
upgraded the 200 room Equinox Resort in Vermont for the Star-
wood Luxury Collection.
Bradelds rm recently completed a project in Londons Eaton
Square for a Persian princess. I consider designing ones own
home to be the ultimate privilege, he said, describing the project
as one of his most challenging to date. What appears to be a
single seamless apartment today is, actually, the lateral conver-
sion of two oors of adjacent terrace houses. It was a Herculean
task. We had to cope with weight-bearing beams that divided the
two houses. But we were determined to achieve this vista with a
gracious central aperture. So brick by brick, we moved the ues
to center the passage. The British masons thought we were insane.
It took fortitude and courage and was very costly, but well worth
the effort.
Bradeld has worked extensively with Chinese clients and in
China itself, as well as throughout Asia. He has conducted proj-
ects in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Malaysia, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
Theyre so in advance of what were doing herethe technology
is making selection [of products] so much more exciting and ac-
cessible, he said earnestly about China.

In 2000, he was invited as a guest of the Chinese Division of Cul-

ture along with 12 designers from different countries to earn a Feng
Shui diploma at Nanjing University. I was the only American
from the East Coast. It was fascinating to discover that Feng Shui
is an exact science and can be measured. So much of the practice is
simple common sensebalance and harmony. It was my rst visit
to China and I was enthralled. Bradeld was also recently the only
American asked to serve on the panel of judges for the Chinas Most
Successful Designs Awards Competition. I was attered to par-
ticipate and pleased to see China take its place on the international
design stage. He said he is often intrigued by burgeoning Chinese
artists. Their creative vision puts a new spin on the genus. Among
the many, Liao Yibai, whose current collection Real Fake is stun-
ning. I am also enamored of the work of the Luo Brothers and Sui
Jianguo, whose pieces I have showcased in famed movie director
Oliver Stones New York residence.
At present, Bradeld has dozens of projects and new ventures
on his platehis fth book, A 21st-Century Palace, hit shelves in
mid-May. This follows the success of tomes Millennium Modern
and Ex Arte. He continues his popular textile lines with Stark and
Old World Weavers and is collaborating with Kyle Bunting for
a new furniture collection. Bradeld said these have received
enthusiastic reviews and awards. They are sold through retail av-
enues, at auction as art pieces, and [are] included in international
museum exhibitions.

White Hall, my

in Manhattan.
Although the house
was originally built
in 1869, the intent
was to design an
interior to reect a
contemporary point
of view.

The drawing room is perhaps my most audacious

statement. Everything here is about surprise. The
room reects my infatuation with the 1940s the
decade of my birth. But I was not trying to re-create a
period room. I wanted to capture our moment in time.
If someone were to look back at this room in the future,
they would absolutely know it was designed at the turn
of this millennium.

With regards to client projects, mums the word. I have to be

very discreet. My clients proles are very high But the projects
I do believe I can really discuss: Were doing an amazing 200,000
square-foot house outside of Shanghai. Were also on the short
list for an extraordinary project in Guangzhou, outside of Hong
Kong. Bradelds grueling schedule may see him jet to London
for a site visit before he zips off to Dubai or New Delhi. They say if
you want to get something done, put it on a busy desk, he said. He
maintains an impressive social calendar, darting from gala to gala
and hosting a slew of parties, all while balancing his high profes-
sional demand.
Bradeld rarely has time to escape for a recharge. My work is
very much a part of my psyche, so even when I escape, my mind is
constantly being turned on by ideas, he said. A recent adventure to
Burma provided such an opportunity for inspiration and discovery.
Every year, he treats a small circle of established chums to a re-
treat somewhere around the world. Previous trips include Ireland,
Egypt, France, Marrakech and Italy. For 2012, Bradeld will play
host on a ve-home estate in Bali for ten days.
My biggest fear is being bored, a sentiment I like to share with
my clients, Bradeld stated. This may explain why he is continu-
ally the interior designer of choice for billionaires and the global jet
set. I have never been afraid of challenging my audience and have
always been willing to embrace our period in time. I like to think
that my work represents 21st-century style. Glamour is a constant
ingredient in all of my designs. he concluded.

What we needed
to nd was a chef
whose style of cui-
sine matches the
values of YUE and
all its unique as-
pects. The cuisine
needed to bring
together China
and New York,
itself a large melt-
ing pot of diverse
cultures. The
food also needed
to satisfy the
demanding pal-
ates of the social
elite, including
celebrities like
Lang Lang and Donald Trump.
The dishes served needed to showcase the creativity and energy
essential to the birth of a new magazine. Lastly, a bit of star power
and name recognition certainly would not hurt.
One chef managed to check off all the boxes. The painstaking
search lead us to the soft-spoken yet highly passionate Chef An-
gelo Sosa, widely known as the fan favorite on Bravos Top Chef
and Top Chef All-Stars cooking competition shows.
At rst glance, Chef Sosa probably wasnt the most obvious pick.
He was born to Italian Dominican parents in Connecticut and was
mentored in the kitchens of many esteemed French chefs. Halfway
into his still very young career, he developed an obsession with Asian
avors, which is now the theme that denes him. For this, Chef
Sosa credits another great chef and fusion innovator, Jean-Georges
Vongerichten: Growing up, I had the spices of Dominican cuisine
in my blood, but my mentor Jean-Georges Vongerichten exposed me
to Asian avors. Sosa also avoids being cast as a chef of any specic
cuisine, instead stating that his style is Dened not by cuisine, but
by avors. Thats also why Chef Sosas most recent cookbook, Flavor
Exposed, is categorized by avor proles rather than the traditional
appetizer-mains-dessert model.
It has become increasingly rare to see chefs unabashedly embrace
the term fusion. 20 years ago, the concept of fusing the culinary tech-
niques and avors of different cultures was loved by critics and diners
alike and helped launch the careers of chefs such as Nobu Matsuhisa,
who masterfully blended Peruvian and Japanese avors. As the years
went by, less talented chefs ooded the market with their own fusion
creations, and fusion started to become synonymous with unfocused,
misguided avors. Therefore, it is refreshing to see an accomplished
chef wave the fusion ag proudly. Im a rm believer of fusion, and
will not shy away from it, said Sosa. The foundation is based on ex-
tensive travel, research, and reading, so that I can preserve tradition,
but put a new slant on it.
082_Angelo Sosa.indd 84 6/18/12 1:45:55 PM
SUMMER 2012 | 85

This belief is abundantly

showcased at Chef Sosas new-
est Midtown restaurant, Social
Eatz, where the menu features
items that at rst glance are quite
accessible to the average diner but
that feature an added Asian twist
of avor. The nest example is the
Bimbimbap Burger, which takes
the all-American concept of a ham-
burger and infuses it with Korean
ingredients found in a Bimbimbop.
My cooking is all about dancing
through various parts of Asia, play-
ing with avors, said Sosa. Food
should be seductive. Introduce new
avors while staying approachable. So that the experience is ap-
proachable but transporting.
When it came to actually planning the menu for the party, Chef
Sosas ideas came across as bold and original, taking into consider-
ation the avor, availability of prime ingredients, and the way the
food will be served. The rst item he came up with was a cha xiao
bao with watermelon and pork belly, nished with sweet sesame oil.
The combination of the rich, heavy avor of pork belly and contrast-
ing seasonal watermelon makes for an interesting pair in texture and
avor, and the cha xiao bao format makes it great for an event. Other
ideas included a sh taco, created Japanese-style with raw sh and
sriracha, and sweetbreads with black pepper sauce. I want to bring
avors from the Far East to Midtown East. Something thats sweet,
sour and seductive, said Sosa, as he tries to interpret the palates of
the guests at the event. My cooking will bring back memories and
create new memories. Seduce and entice them.
Judging from the reactions of the guests at the launch event, ev-
eryone was very much seduced and enticed by Chef Sosas creations.
As the food continued to ow out of the kitchen, I managed to track
him down halfway through the party to ask him a question that I was
dying to know. What are the fantastic spices that he puts on the fries?
I am completely infatuated with the avor and simply had to know
his secret.
Love.

HUNTING FOR OVERSEAS CHINESE CULTURAL TREASURES

2005

20112011

...

1297

2011

DURING THE TUMULTUOUS YEARS of the

early twentieth century, many of Chinas most precious
cultural artifacts were taken out of the country and
brought to the West. One century later, China is begin-
ning to reclaim the treasures of its cultural heritage. Chi-
nas wealthy are more eager than ever to own a piece of
their nations historyand more willing than ever to pay
record-breaking prices for it. With a surging domestic
market for art in China, the countrys fast-growing auc-
tion houses are willing and able to provide buyers with
access to those otherwise elusive treasures.
Founded in 2005, Beijing Council International Auction Co. Ltd.
is a prime example of this twenty-rst century phenomenon. Its prin-
ciple of insistence upon integrity has garnered it numerous awards,
notably the 2011 Auction House of the Year award from the -
nance and style magazine LOFFICIEL for its record-breaking sales
(which totaled two billion renminbi) in the spring of 2011. Wendy Wu
of Beijing Councils North American Representative Ofce informs
YUE that the auction house has established its own ofce in New
York City and has organized events such as an art collectors confer-
ence at the Sheraton New York Hotel; she also indicates that it ranks
rst in the world in the sale of ancient Chinese paintings and manu-
scripts. Clearly, it is in an ideal position to link American supply with
Chinese demand.
Yet, as Company President Dong Guoqiang explains, there is an
even deeper signicance to its success: I hope that Beijing Council
will become a company with cultural ideals; winning an award is
great encouragement. In the future, Beijing Council willmake ev-
ery effort to reveal and unearth the deeper value of the goods at auc-
tion. As demonstrated by the striking case of one particular artifact,
repatriation is just such a cultural ideal. The artifact in question
is a calligraphy scroll dating from the Yuan Dynasty, commissioned
in 1297 A.D. by the Chengzong Emperor; part of its lengthy, poetic
Chinese name translates to Auspicious Crane Poem. By the begin-
ning of the twenty-rst century, it had ended up in a private collec-
tion in San Francisco. Once Beijing Council acquired the scroll in
2011, it immediately realized that this object had potential.

...

Yet even Beijing Council could not have anticipated just how ex-
traordinaryor how desiredit was. The scrolls December 3, 2011
auction was unprecedented, with the price of the scroll skyrocketing
from ve million RMB to an astonishing one hundred million, the
highest price in history for a Yuan Dynasty artifact. The scroll was
nally returned to China through its Chinese buyer, having made its
mark as a stunning example of the desire of Chinese art connoisseurs
to reclaim their nations cultural inheritances.
Dong reects on the record-breaking sale: I have encountered
some other collectors and buyers abroad; their impression of Chinas
auction industry at the time was not very positive, and they lacked
a kind of faith in Chinese enterprisesI hope that they can dispel
this misgiving and establish trust in the domestic auction industry. I
think, in the end, all of our hard work will accomplish this.
Beijing Council is not the only auction house making its mark in the
world of art acquisition and repatriation. The major auction houses
Beijing Poly International Auction Co., Ltd. and China Guardian
Auctionstwo of the largest auction houses in Chinahave suc-
cessfully engaged with the American market. Both auction houses
have established ofces in New York City, and both have repatriated
cultural artifacts back to China. Poly Auction has successfully recov-
ered artifacts from the Summer Palace, while China Guardian has
directed the purchase and repatriation of many valuable Chinese
cultural artifacts that had previously been overseas, several of them
dating from the Qing Dynasty and earlier.
China has not only come far in reclaiming its artifactsit has
emerged as a dominant force in the auction world.

NEW YORK IS MORE THAN A GRID. Rather, it is an intricate ma-

trix of communities woven together, a medley of dierent neighbor-
hoods, each with its own distinct architecture, history, residents and
pattern of life.
Parsing the seemingly endless number of neighborhoods, each
with new and ever-abbreviated monikers, can seem daunting. From
SoHo to TriBeCa, from the UWS to the UES, Manhattans dense real
estate landscape has an air of exclusivity. Despite a willingness to
invest, out-of-towners with discerning tastes may feel disoriented as
they try to navigate the market.
Heres a run-down of some of New Yorks most desirable areas.

UPPER EAST SIDE
Long known as one of Manhattans most exclusive areas, the
Upper East Side (or UES) spans from 59th Street to 96th Street,
between Central Park and the East River, with prime properties
found between Fifth and Park Avenues near Central Park. Build-
ings in this afuent area tend to be older, prewar townhouses and
limestone cooperatives, which have proven attractive to a wide ar-
ray of individuals of high net worth for almost a century. Today,
some of New Yorks most celebrated residents, from Madonna to
Mayor Michael Bloomberg, call the area home.
While co-op buildings have traditionally hesitated to accept in-
dividuals from overseas into their elite coteries, the inux of foreign
buyers into the hyper-luxury market over the past few years has
altered this established norm. New York City is a dynamic place
comprised of hardworking people. I feel our Chinese values match-
up perfectly with those of New Yorkers. says Grace Leung Levin of
Town, a real estate rm.
Buyers looking for tall, new high-rises should generally direct their
attention elsewhere, but those in search of classical renement and
traditional American luxury will feel quite at home on the UES.

UPPER EAST SIDE (CONTD)
For over a century, the neighborhood has housed elite, pedigreed
private schools, including Dalton, Spence, Marymount and Chapin,
all of which regularly send students to the countrys top universities.
Brown Harris Stevens agent Paula Del Nunzio, one of the citys
top brokers, explains the particular appeal of the neighborhood:
What makes the Upper East Side so valuable is that much of it is
landmarked and will therefore remain a low height area with el-
egant cooperative buildings and historics mansion and townhous-
es. The value of residential real estate on Fifth Avenue and Park
Avenue - and the side streets in between - has been proven over
decades and represents a safe investment for the newest wave of
buyers. It is today, as it was in the early 1900s, the Gold Coast.

TRIBECA
On the other side of town, and the other side of the spectrum,
TriBeCa (which stands for Triangle Below Canal) has become
one of Manhattans most fashionable and expensive residential
areas. With good schools, ne dining and sprawling loft spaces,
the neighborhood has boomed in the past decade, with seven- and
eight-gure spaces regularly listed on the market. Raphael De
Niro, a managing director at Prudential Douglas Elliman, sug-
gested several reasons for TriBeCas immense popularity in recent
years. It kind of found that right balance between residential and
commercial, he said. Indeed, the neighborhoods cobblestone
streets and relative lack of retail trafc creates a quiet coherence
not found in many other corners of the city. Mr. De Niro explained
that TriBeCas close proximity to other great neighborhoods like
West Village and SoHo is also a central draw.
Like the Upper East Side, TriBeCas landmark status prevents
developers from building high-rise apartment buildings. Most of the
top residential buildings in TriBeCa, however, are converted indus-
trial buildings, carefully renovated with luxury buyers in mind.
New conversion projects like 250 West and Cobblestone Loft at
28 Laight Street offer uptown-style amenities, including roof decks,
tness rooms, parking garages and full-service attendants. As Ms.
Levin says, Many of my international buyers feel more comfort-
able with the amenities and community feel that a new building
provides.
Aside from the long-settled celebrity residents, the neighborhood
is becoming increasingly popular among foreign investors and
homebuyers, Mr. De Niro explained.

WEST VILLAGE
Like TriBeCa, the West Village offers elegant living outside of
the traditional luxury real estate box. With townhouses lining the
quiet streets, the neighborhood is particularly appealing to families.
Robby Browne of the Corcoran Group, an established broker who
has worked extensively in the area, described the neighborhood in
familiar terms. It really is a village, he said. It just feels different.
Its got a different texture.
While the West Village may indeed reect the citys colorful
character, there are options for those who tolerate only the nest
residential fabrics. Superior Ink, a new development at 400 West
12th Street, offers a unique combination of townhouses and condos
in a sumptuous, full-service setting. Units currently on the market
in the building range from $10.7 million to $35.7 million.
By and large, however, real estate in the West Village is limited
to townhouses and smaller condo buildings. Although townhouses
are rarely delivered to new buyers in mint condition, the investment
may be worthwhile, as Mr. Browne suggests that more and more
luxury buyers are moving to the area. That seems to be where so
many people want to be. he said.

UPPER WEST SIDE

Probably the most popular neighborhood for overseas buyers in
search of a luxury pied-a-terre, the Upper West Side offers a full
buffet of new development buildings. From the Mandarin Orien-
tal (where an anonymous Asian nancier purchased a penthouse
unit for $30 million in 2011) to the fabled edice 15 Central Park
West, the neighborhood has unparalleled options for those seeking
splendor.
Home to celebrities, socialites and bankers, the Upper West Side
(UWS) has broad appeal. The neighborhood boasts some of the na-
tions top private schools, including Collegiate and Trinity.
While foreign buyers have historically preferred to look for con-
dos in newly constructed high-rises, the Upper West Side offers
many different architectural options for those looking for a more
distinctive space. The Laureate, a new luxury condominium build-
ing at 2150 Broadway, has attracted many foreign buyers. With
massive turn-key spaces and ornate xtures throughout, the build-
ings design is proof that the developers spared no expense creating
a classic uptown look.
Early this year, a property at 15 Central Park West sold for $88
million, shattering all of Manhattans real estate records. The
building remains one of the citys most coveted addresses.

LUXURY WATCHMAKER ROLEX has opened a brand new

store in New York City in conjunction with Wempe, a New York
City jeweler and longtime partner of Rolex. This boutique, Rolexs
rst in New York City, opened on April 11, 2012 at 53rd Street, in
the heart of Manhattans Fifth Avenue shopping district.
The stores distinctive exterior has a sleek silver design motif to
complement the gold watches in the display window; the luxuri-
ous interior has been done up in imported bronze, marble and
Italian leather and at 1500 square feet, it offers ample space for
customers to peruse the star of the show: the extensive collection
of Rolex timepieces.
The collaboration with Wempe is especially important, as the
New York City jeweler is in an ideal position to contribute its ex-
pertise on the New York City market to the Geneva-based watch-
makers latest enterprise. We are delighted to work with Wempe
to introduce the rst Rolex boutique in this market, says Rolex
USA President and CEO Stewart Wicht of the partnership.

Terracotta Warriors: Defenders of Chinas First Em-

peror at Discovery Times Square features one of the most
signicant archaeological discoveries of all time.
The exhibition starts with an educational video clip that
briey covers the historical background of the terracotta
warriors. The exhibit displays over twenty artifacts dat-
ing as far back as 221 B.C., including a Han Dynasty tomb
door that has never before been exhibited. Visitors have the
unique opportunity to closely approach ten of the life-sized
clay soldiers. The exhibition has Chinese and English nar-
ration. Tickets cost $25 for adults, $19.50 for children be-
tween the ages of 4-12, and $22.50 for seniors over 65.
The opening celebration on May 23, 2012 was an event
that gathered many notable Chinese delegates, including Han Feng
(costume designer of the Metropolitan Operas Madame Buttery),
Liu Yunhui (Deputy Director General of Shaanxi Provincial Cul-
tural Relics Bureau), and Sun Guoxiang (Consul General of China
in New York City).
The exhibition was a joint undertaking between the China In-
stitute and Discovery Times Square. China Institute President Sara
McCalpin says of the Institutes participation in the partnership:
The China Institute was founded in 1926 with the purpose of pro-
moting thorough knowledge of China through educational, cultural
and artistic exhibitions and programs. We are delighted to partici-
pate in this innovative exhibition and to introduce the terracotta
warriors and their history to New York.
