Course Description: This course traces the history of Filipino Architecture from the early Philippine settlers through the contemporary postmodern era. The various formal languages (styles) and theories that shaped the history of Filipino Architecture within the specified time span will be explored through the close examination of a select group of buildings and the specific cultural, social, political and economic contexts of their design and construction.

Course objectives: Treating the history of architecture as a history not of buildings per se, but of cultural beliefs and ideas, values and aesthetic ideals actualized through architectural forms and experiences, this course seeks to foster the students' ability to analyze and understand the unique formal vocabulary of architecture and its expressive potential, as well as the complex and instrumental dialogue between architecture and culture. Course Structure: Lectures with slides. Lecture slides may be made available online after the class lecture but usage of these must not replace actual lecture. Student Evaluation (Grading): 1. Your final grade will be an average of the quizzes, in addition to your consistent attendance, on-time written assigned papers, class participation and other requirements contributory to the course objectives. 2. All students must read the course reading materials and text assignments, understand and manifest them through active class participation, verbally contributing to the intellectual life and development of the class. 3. Class Participation includes, but is not limited to: asking questions, answering questions posed by the instructor and/or classmates, providing examples or experiences relevant to the class topic, brainstorming ideas, suggesting other material that expands or supplements the discussion, or contributing in other constructive ways. 4. Attendance in this class is necessary; unexcused absences may reflect a lower final grade. 5. The quizzes are based on the sequential information from the text, lectures, and other course methodologies. There can be no make-up for quizzes. 6. There may also be additional written assignments. Instructions will be handed out in class ahead of its due date. Course Policies: Plagiarism: Copying of or taking a portion of or the whole work of others without proper citation will be dealt with as per the University policy on plagiarism. Attendance Policy: Attendance is expected from all students as this is a lecture-based course. Likewise, tardiness will not be tolerated. It is very disruptive to be late, so please be on time. During Class: Sleeping in class, dozing, head down on your desk, multimedia players, food, and cell phones are not permitted in the classroom; water and other soft drinks are OK. Considerate and respectful behavior is required at all times. To facilitate student participation, electronic devices (cell phones, PDAs, laptop computers, etc.) should not be used during class time. Make-up Exams: Make-up for major exams may be arranged for extraordinary circumstances. Disabled Students: Students with specials needs may please direct their concerns/ requirements to the instructor for apt action.
