We reserve the right to take o points if we cannot see how you arrived at your answer (even if your nal answer is correct). Circle or otherwise indicate your nal answers. Please keep your written answers brief; be clear and to the point. Good luck! 1. (4 points) A vertical mast is held in place by wires from the top of it to the ground. The mast is 60 m tall and the wires are xed in the ground 25m from the foot of the mast. How long is each of the wires? 2. (4 points) For each of these bearings, calculate the back bearing. (a) 038 o (b) 342 o (c) Ship A is 21 km from a lighthouse on a bearing of 065 o . A second ship B is 13 km from the lighthouse on a bearing of 215 o . Find the distance and bearing of ship B from ship A. 3. (4 points) (a) A ship of mass 20,000 tonnes has a density of 0.8 tonne /m 3 . What is the volume of the ship in m 3 ? (b) An explorer walks 120 km north from his camp and then 35 km east. What is the length of his shortest return journey to his camp? 4. (4 points) Solve these pairs of simultaneous equations by elimination 2h j = 3 3h + 2j = 8 5. (4 points) A salesman leaves home at 0800 and travels for 1 1 2 hours at an average speed of 60 km/h. He then stops for 30 minutes. He continues for 2 more hours at 50 km /h and stops for 1 hour. He then returns home and arrive home at 1600 (a) Show this in a travel graph (b) Calculate the salesmans average speed on the return journey. 6. (4 points) Two circles X and Y have radii (r-1) cm and (r+5) cm respectively. The area of Y is three times of X. (a) Write an epression for the area of each circle (b) Form and equation linking the areas of X and Y r-1 r+5 7. (4 points) Two points on the ground, L and M are 2 km apart. L is due north of M. A person sets o from point M and heads due east with a velocity of 6 km /h. After 1 hour he is at point X; after 2 hours he is at point Y. Calculate the size of the angles a and b. 8. (4 points) A metal bowl is made by taking a hemisphere and hollowing out another hemishere from the inside. The thickness of the bowl is 3mm and is constant throughout. The outer radius of the bowl is 8cm. Calculate to 1 decimal place, the volume of metal needed to make the bowl. X Y L M 2 km a b 9. (4 points) (a) Two radio transmitters, Amber Rdio and Beacon Radio are 50 km apart. Beacon Radio is south-east of Amber radio. Amber radio has a range of 30 km. (b) Draw a scale diagram of the position of the two radio transmitters (c) Draw the locus of all the points that are within the range of Amber Radio. (d) On the same diagram, draw the locus of all the points that are within the range of Beacon Radio. (e) Shade on your diagram the region that falls within the range of both radio transmitters. 10.
