Erick Erickson, Editor at RedState.com, regarding the Supreme Court ruling on ObamaCare (now forever known as "The Obama Health Care Tax").
Dear RedState Reader, As you have no doubt heard by now, the Supreme Court largely upheld Obamacare with Chief Justice John Roberts writing the majority 5 to 4 decision. Even Justice Kennedy called for the whole law to be thrown out, but John Roberts saved it. Having gone through the opinion, I am not going to beat up on John Roberts. I am disappointed, but I want to make a few points. John Roberts is playing at a different game than the rest of us. We re on poker. He s on chess. First, I get the strong sense from a few anecdotal stories about Roberts over the past few months and the way he has written this opinion that he very, very much was concerned about keeping the Supreme Court above the partisan fray and damaging the reputation of the Court long term. It seems to me the left was smart to make a full frontal assault on the Court as it persuaded Roberts. Second, in writing his opinion, Roberts forces everyone to deal with the issue as a political, not a legal issue. In the past twenty years, Republicans have punted a number of issues to the Supreme Court asking the Court to save us from ourselves. They can t do that with Roberts. They tried with McCain-Feingold, which was originally upheld. This case is a timely reminder to the GOP that five votes are not a sure thing.

Third, while Roberts has expanded the taxation power, which I don t really think is a massive expansion from what it was, Roberts has curtailed the commerce clause as an avenue for Congressional overreach. In so doing, he has affirmed the Democrats are massive taxers. In fact, I would argue that this may prevent future mandates in that no one is going to go around campaigning on new massive tax increases. On the upside, I guess we can tax the hell out of abortion now. Likewise, in a 7 to 2 decision, the Court shows a strong majority still recognize the concept of federalism and the restrains of Congress in forcing states to adhere to the whims of the federal government. Fourth, in forcing us to deal with this politically, the Democrats are going to have a hard time running to November claiming the American people need to vote for them to preserve Obamacare. It remains deeply, deeply unpopular with the American people. If they want to make a vote for them a vote for keeping a massive tax increase, let them try. Fifth, the decision totally removes a growing left-wing talking point that suddenly they must vote for Obama because of judges. The Supreme Court as a November issue for the left is gone. For the right? That sound you hear is the marching of libertarians into Camp Romney, with noses held, knowing that the libertarian and conservative coalitions must unite to defeat Obama and Obamacare. Finally, while I am not down on John Roberts like many of you are today, i will be very down on Congressional Republicans if they do not now try to shut down the individual mandate. Force the Democrats on the record about the mandate. Defund Obamacare. This now, by necessity, is a political fight and the GOP sure as hell should fight. 60% of Americans agree with them on the issue. And guess what? The Democrats have been saying for a while that individual pieces of Obamacare are quite popular. With John Roberts opinion, the repeal fight takes place on GOP turf, not Democrat turf. The all or nothing repeal has always been better ground for the GOP and now John Roberts has forced everyone onto that ground. It seems very, very clear to me in reviewing John Roberts decision that he is playing a much longer game than us and can afford to with a life tenure. And he probably just handed Mitt Romney the White House. *A friend points out one other thing go back to 2009. Olympia Snowe was the deciding vote to get Obamacare out of the Senate Committee. Had she voted no, we d not be here now. Sincerely yours, Erick Erickson Editor, REDSTATE.COM
members of society that give back to their community and church. As an example my son has followed my footsteps into politics by being elected to the Henry County Board of Education as he believes that he can help contribute not only to the financial issues facing our system (he has a Bachelors in Finance and will have his Masters at the end of this summer) but also give a young fresh student perspective to the board that he felt was missing before. Ryan was elected at 21 years old and is the youngest elected official in Georgia as well as being the youngest ever elected here locally. While I brought up education, I believe this also plays into the family unit. I have worked diligently to support education and that refers to all education because I do not believe education is regulated to just public education. I support public education, private education, charter schools, magnet schools, career academy s, virtual schools, home school, and support the concept of placing a child in the best environment for them to achieve the success they are seeking. I do not support a one size fits all approach to education. I Coauthored last year s College and Career readiness bill which implemented 16 career pathways for high school graduation, this has been a passion of mine for several years. I went to the HCBOE and volunteered as a Substitute teacher in 2008 and 2009 and taught in every high school in the county, including Patrick Henry our reform school. Many teachers will say, walk a day in my shoes and I can honestly say I have, as I took these opportunities to not only cover the classroom but also to talk to other teachers, administrators, counselors, students, and other staff about the current environment within or schools. I did this in effort to change graduation requirements that would focus on vocational and workforce training as I felt we are severely lacking in the category. This bill passed in 2011 and is now law which will give students multiple avenues toward graduation that will focus on their needs and desires rather than a standard government track. Additionally, I am endorsed and publicly supported by Georgia s State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge. I will list other very important endorsements below. As for abortion, I am strictly Pro-Life and I have a 100% voting record for 8 straight years with the Georgia Right to Life. I have participated in the annual march for life walk at the Capitol and have consistently co-sponsored pro-life legislation. I am the only one in this race endorsed by the Georgia Right to Life. I am endorsed by them not just because of my voting record but for my core belief that life begins at conception and it is our paramount duty to protect those that cannot protect themselves. I cosponsored the Women s Right to Know bill in 2005, this year s bill that reduced the gestation age for an abortion to 20 weeks to match what is medically viable for a baby to sustain life, as well as the Human Life Amendment which has yet to pass. My wife and I lost two babies between our oldest son and our middle daughter and we have been Pro-Life much longer than I have been a State Representative. My sister is unable to have children and has adopted three children of her own, there are alternatives to abortion and I will continue to strive to ensure that our young women are armed with the knowledge of these options until the day Roe vs. Wade is overturned. Morality in government? I do not believe you can separate a man from his morals even in government. I am not ashamed to profess my Christian morals and beliefs and I will vote accordingly. If individuals or constituents want someone who is atheist or someone who thinks they can split their personal value and moral positions with that of their representation then I am not the person they should vote for. As for the difference between Mr. Rutledge and me. I cannot tell you that complete answer as I have no knowledge of where Mr. Rutledge stands on almost every key issue facing this community. His entire campaign has been about destroying my character and ethics with his distortion of my record and positions. He claims to be a Christian yet he attacks my character and my family in his literature. So if you want differences on taxation, public safety, education, transportation, health care, insurance, private property rights, or any other issue than I guess the difference is that my position is public and he just doesn t talk about specifics. As for his single issue that he is discussing, Ethics reform, this is an issue important to voters and an issue personally important to me. I will support additional improvements to our

ethics laws but will not sign a pledge from a Liberal Democrat organization called Common Cause which Mr. Rutledge has. The pledge is to cap lobbyist s gifts at $100, which sounds great and on its face I could support but this group is pitching gimmicks to divide the Republican Party. Common Cause s main goal is to end all lobbyist expenditures not just gifts but campaign contributions, and go to a Taxpayer funded system of elections. This means no one would be allowed to give to political campaigns and would violate your free speech rights. I equate this to signing a pledge with Planned Parenthood or Georgia Equality, it will never happen. The real issue with ethics is accountability and transparency. In 2005 the Georgia General Assembly passed HB48 (with my support), which for the first time required that lobbyist expenditures be published on our Ethics website for all to view. True ethics reform comes from transparency and accountability. Georgia has consistently been one of the top performing states when it comes to ethics and transparency; in 2006 and 2009 CPI ranked Georgia as 7th in Nation with an 'A'. But we cannot rest on our laurels or point to previous successes. We need to continue to address ethics reform and work towards adding additional funding to the governing body that enforces our current ethics laws. No matter what he tells you I have never done anything unethical, immoral, or illegal. A technical error on a disclosure does not equate to unethical behavior, our reporting guidelines are complicated and errors can be made. Mr. Rutledge himself has admitted he made an error on his very first ever campaign disclosure, an action that violated our State Ethics Law. I have done disclosures for close to nine years and have made two technical errors over that period of time and have had to pay the minimal fines, just as Mr. Rutledge will have to do for his violation this year. Campaigns are tough and this position is not for the light hearted but truth and honesty are key. I think the above responses clearly show that I oppose all of Obama s policy initiatives and will continue to fight against his socialist view of government. I co-sponsored HB87 Georgia's comprehensive approach to immigration, I personally called out our previous Georgia Attorney General when he refused to represent Georgia on the Healthcare lawsuit, and I have passed my own market based insurance bill that reduced state regulation on small business' that will help more small business to offer affordable healthcare coverage to their employees. I previously co-sponsored Georgia's historic eminent domain bill in response to the illegal actions taken by one of our local cities and will continue to fight to preserve our freedoms while looking for better more efficient manners to address true government services and needs. Below is a list of official endorsements from other key leaders and organizations. However as you read this please remember my opponent has no endorsements from any public official that I am aware of and no organized group at this moment again that I am aware of. Also please note that every Constitutional officer in this State is supporting me.

In the past, the fireworks were launched from City Park and were viewable from there. Now that the launch location has been changed, the best areas to see the fireworks will be at the Griffin Spalding Airport, Airport Road Park or any of the large parking areas surrounding the airport and fairgrounds. For the past several years, a free concert has been held at the airport for those who gathered there. Launching the fireworks from there just made sense. Griffin Fire Marshall Mitchell Cardell said, The airport is an ideal location. We need a large buffer on all sides for safety; the area behind the fairgrounds is safe, with easy access. The fireworks will be launched over the crowd at the free concert, so it will be a great location for viewing. The concerts will feature bluegrass gospel group The Watkins Family, featuring Jeff Stanley on the fiddle; and blues/Americana/acoustic artist Heather Luttrell. Big Scott Pinner, from 92.5 The Bear, will be on hand to emcee the event. The flags and the National Anthem will be presented by the Griffin Composite Squadron Civil Air Patrol. To attend the free concerts and see the fireworks, come to the Kiwanis Fairgrounds (parking will be available in the front and side parking lots) and use the gates on either side. Campaign Signs

Kappy Brantley Morris wrote: Larry, I was impressed with your desire to give back to the community. Having children who went through the Henry County school system, you have first hand parental insight into school issues. You are aware of the teacher/pupil ratio at a staggering 1/32. You mentioned how our community needs an educated populace which good schools can provide. You do feel charter schools have a place as an alternative in the system. After House Resolution 1162, the board must be willing to face charter school possibilities. I like your idea of starting early, possibly in the ninth grade to hone in on SAT related test taking strategies and academic help. Particularly I like how you are keenly aware of how state level funding is critical to local budgetary concerns in operating our schools. You see the need for strong discipline and order in the classroom plus adult mentoring for students. You have specific responses for many issues in education and would certainly make an informed, serious, productive board member. I commend you; your standing in the candidate forum was excellent. Mike Moon wrote: Here is my take on the forum and the way everyone that was there presented themselves and the ease of their answering the questions put to them. (A) Mr. Hinton looked uncomfortable to me as he spoke. He made a comment that many of us even those of us from the county are tired of hearing and that is I am from the county. Everyone who lives in Henry County today, this is their homes too. (B) Mr. Thrasher looked very professional and was at ease with his answers and his way of presenting his message to the people. (C) Mr. Stanley also looked very professional and was at ease with his answers and of course he has spoken before groups before and he does do his homework on the questions that need answering. It appeared the forum went well and in my opinion Mr. Stanley and Mr. Thrasher came out on top as the leaders in this race.

As a leader we spend time talking to customers and directing subordinates, but how much time is spent listening, thinking, and asking about the communities future educational needs? When you interview a prospective employee, do you realize this is the educational product of (plus or minus) 13 years, and the efforts of one or more parents? How often have you thought about your positive or negative impact, on the quality of future employees? If you are interested in advancing your communication skill-set, and positively influencing the future, try these three listening, thinking and asking exercises: o Listen to members of our community as they discuss their struggles to understand what occurs when their children go to school. Think about the Un-Known, Known s; for what parents need to know, to support education as it occurs. Ask about Academic Parenting Classes for all Georgia, Race to the Top (RT3) Schools, and School Districts.

As your knowledge base grows your conversations should focus on, how we can do a better job educating children, and implementing solutions to meet the needs of parents in our community. If you pause to think about it, their needs are your needs as well. The following creative nonfiction dialogue demonstrates the impact of a seemingly innocuous conservation about our schools, and its impact on the community. It is June, and Boss-man asks Worker how his son John did in school this year. (Number-One-Sons name is not John.) For the most part, it was fine, but he struggled with Chemistry the first half of the year, but by then we had figured out the problem, and we got him on the right track, said Worker. Boss-man asked, What was the problem? At first we thought it was the math, which was kind of confusing, as John normally does well in math. What it turned out to be, was a translation problem. I m confused, said Boss-man, a translation problem? Yea, it s kind of weird, but John s Math Teacher and his Chemistry Teacher were using a different language to describe the same thing mathematically, and once we figured that out, we focused on translating the information into the correct math terms, and his grades shot right back up where they belong, replied Worker. Well I m glad that everything turned out ok for John, said Boss-man. Yes, this is not great dialogue, and, it s not the Great American Novel. Nonetheless, as a member of the Business Community, you now have identified potential concern about a local high school. You have a Science Teacher whom allegedly uses a set of mathematical terminology, different from the terminology used by the students Math Teacher, which increases student difficulty in comprehension, decoding, and translation. Kind of like listening to someone lecture in Greek, while writing notes in Chinese, and your only fluent in English. So whom do you talk too? That is your decision to make, however if I was asked, I would suggest the schools, School Council Chairperson, which would be a parent leader in the school. Why? The Georgia School Council ~12~

If you are curious about why our schools should be conducting Academic Parenting Classes, read the Georgia Assessment of Performance on School Standards: Closing the Gap (GAPSS) pages 98 through 105. Read the implementation requirement HERE: HTTP://WWW.GADOE.ORG/SCHOOL-IMPROVEMENT/PAGES/GAPSS.ASPX, under REQUIRED GAPSS ANALYSIS. Henry County Schools implemented the GAPSS program in 2009. Yes, I understand that 8 out of 161 pages seems a small part, which one school principle was quick to point out. However, doing nothing makes this more than a small issue, and reminds me of The legend of the brave Dutch boy - who supposedly put his finger in the dyke to prevent a flood by MARY ELIZABETH MAPES DODGE (1831-1905) of New York. However, THIS VERSION (HTTP://DRBOLI.WORDPRESS.COM/2009/03/06/THE-LITTLE-DUTCH-BOY-WHO-SAVED-HOLLAND/) is a better analogy of the efforts teachers make as represented by the boys. The Burgomaster and the Burghers on the other hand Just read it and make your own inferences. History teaches us that many guided hands make a large job easier. Julius Caesar s army in 55BC built a bridge ACROSS THE RHINE RIVER IN 10 DAYS. If we were to engage the parents of the 40,000 students in Henry County, or any county, provide them with Academic Parenting Skills, and simple tools that allow them to support education as it occurs As a Business Leader, or a Partner in Education when was the last time someone asked you to support education and it did not require some additional expense of time, money, or both? I am presuming that you speak with customers, employees, or both. I am not asking that you spend any additional time, just refocus part of the conservation, listen and ask questions. You could be surprised, at what you learn.
