MOVING AMERICA FORWARD

Pres. Barack Obama, keynote speaker at the first annual Tenth Dems fundraiser in 2004

Brad Schneider, Democratic candidate for Congress IL-10

When Barack Obama took office, America was in the midst of a housing market meltdown and an economic crisis as deep as any weve experienced since the Depression. In three short years despite relentless opposition, President Obama is leading us back. The job is far from done, and given the chance, Republicans will swiftly undo much of the progress. Thats why we not only need to re-elect the president, but give him a Congress that will move America forward. Brad Schneider is the kind of congressman we need. He has the business and job growth experience to challenge Republican claims to supremacy on that issue, while adhering to the progressive policies that Democrats hold near and dear. Together with President Obama, he will move America forward, not back to the past.

MOVING ILLINOIS FORWARD

State Rep. Elaine Nekritz, candidate for re-election in District 57

Democrats from the 10th Congressional District such as Terry Link of Waukegan have provided many years of leadership in the Illinois State Senate, advocating reforms and fiscal sanity while maintaining progressive values. In recent years, Link was joined by Dan Kotowski of Park Ridge, who has ably promoted the progressive agenda by pushing for funding for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and requiring insurance coverage for women at risk of breast cancer. Daniel Biss of Evanston has been in the Illinois House for two years and is a candidate for the State Senate this year. His legislative achievements have been recognized by such diverse groups as the Illinois Recycling Association, the Illinois Association of Park Districts, and the Illinois Biotechnology Industry Organization. Among the Democrats who deserve to return to the Illinois House are Rita Mayfield of Waukegan, Robyn Gabel of Evanston and Elaine Nekritz of Northbrook. Nekritz is a leader among reform Democrats in the House and a strong backer of education, health care and the environment. Carol Sente of Vernon Hills is a relative newcomer to the House. An architect, with a focus on green design, she has been working hard to bring employers to our area, protect families from criminal predators, bring transparency to state government, and improve long-term care options for seniors.

Elect a New Generation of Leaders from Cook and Lake Counties

Democratic leaders like Susan Garrett, Karen May and Jeff Schoenberg have stepped aside and will be missed, but a new generation of leaders is emerging, including strong candidates for the State Senate like Amanda Howland of Lake Zurich, Julie Morrison of Deerfield and Melinda Bush of Grayslake. Morrison has a deep understanding of the problems facing the people of Illinois through 14 years as West Deerfield Township Supervisor, where she handles everything from utility shut-offs and mental illness to elder services and road-building. Melinda Bush brings equally strong experience to her bid for the state Senate. As a Lake County Board member she has proven her ability to get results. She fought against a huge development planned for Grayslake. What could have been a desert of foreclosed homes instead became Rollins Savanna, a major nature preserve, enjoyed by birders, hikers, bikers and families.

Hon. Sam Yingling, candidate for State Representative in District 62

For the Illinois House a number of fresh faces have emerged as leaders, led by Des Plaines Mayor Martin Moylan, Northfield Township Clerk Laura Fine, and Ed Erwin of Lindenhurst. Scott Drury of Highwood is a former U.S. Attorney, a volunteer legal educator at a Chicago detention facility and an adjunct professor at Northwestern, who will fight to maintain the high quality of local schools, control government spending and implement tough anti-corruption laws. Sam Yingling of Round Lake Beach unseated a decades-old administration to become Avon Township Supervisor, where he has lowered taxes while expanding services and creating a budget surplus.

MOVING LAKE COUNTY FORWARD

Hon. Mary Ellen Vanderventer, candidate for Lake County Recorder of Deeds

After 32 years of Republican control in the scandal-plagued office of the Lake County States Attorney, Chris Kennedy is just the man to restore public confidence. A former Assistant States Attorney and school board member, he has successfully advocated for people with developmental disabilities. He has also helped pass laws to provide additional police training and to increase access to health insurance and community services. Mary Ellen Vanderventer has been a model public official. As Lake County Recorder she has waged an aggressive campaign against mortgage fraud, spearheaded statewide legislation on the recording of deeds, and created a new process to quickly notify homeowners about vital information. She is well underway on a huge project to modernize the countys recordkeeping and eliminate mountains of paper.

The Democrats offer a strong group of Lake and Cook County candidates who believe in a progressive future but can only succeed with the help of Tenth Dems members like you. For a complete list of candidates running in the 10th Congressional District, visit tenthdems.org.
