GRAMMAR REVISION PRESENT AND PAST TENSES

Objectives:
To do a brief grammar revision of some English verb tenses that you use most often. This should be something that you all know, so this revision is to make sure that you know it 100% right. Some other ways of talking about past events by means of verbs would and used to. Question forms for unknown subjects

Present Simple Tense

The simplest and the most frequent tense in English is the Present Simple Tense. How do we form it? We use the simple dictionary form of a verb (learn, love, go, teach, study ) for all persons except he, she and it, when we have to add s (learns, loves, BUT, be careful about some spellings goes, teaches, studies) They go to school. She studies English. To make questions and negatives, we have to insert the auxiliary verb do or does. Do they go to school? They dont go to school. Does she study English? She doesnt study English. If we have does, there is NO s on the main verb! When and how do we use the Present Simple Tense most frequently? For permanent situations and facts She works in an office. The sun sets in the west. For repeated and regular actions in the present, especially with words often, always, usually, sometimes, every day/week/year She usually gets up at 8.

Present Continuous Tense

Another present tense in English is the Present Continuous Tense, also known as Present Progressive. How do we form it? It is a complex form. The first part is the verb be in the correct person and number. The second part is the main verb, to which we add ing. You should note some special cases of spelling changes when you add ing. Question forms are made relatively simply, by inversion of the auxiliary and the subject. Negative forms are made by inserting not after the auxiliary. When and how do we use the Present Continuous Tense most often? For actions happening at or around the time of speaking We are having a class now. For temporary situations

NT111 ENGLESKI JEZIK PREDAVANJE BR. 1 They live in London but they are staying with some friends in Paris at the moment. Time expressions used with Present Continuous: now, at the moment, at present NOTE: There are some verbs that are rarely used in the continuous form. They express a permanent state. Some of them are appear(=seem), be, believe, belong, cost, feel, forget, hate, have (=possess), know, like, love, mean, need, prefer, remember, see, seem, smell, sound, suppose, think, understand, want I understand it now. NOT: I am understanding it now. BUT: Some of these verbs have several different meanings. For example, see means visual perception, but also meet. In the second meaning in can be in the continuous form, because it is an action. I am having(=taking) a bath now. I am seeing (=meeting) him tonight.

Past Simple Tense

To talk about past events in English, we most often use the Past Simple Tense. How do we form it? We add ed to the verb, for regular verbs: started, finished For irregular verbs, we use the special past simple form, listed as the second column on the list of irregular verbs (was, made, sold ). We have to learn these forms by heart! The bad thing about it is that irregular verbs are the ones which we use most often. The good news is that by using them, we learn and practice them. To make questions and negative forms, we have to insert the auxiliary did. Q: Did they start the class at 10? N: They didnt start the class at 10. Q: Did he sell his car last week? N: He didnt sell his car last week. Note: in questions and negative, where we have did, the main verb is in the usual, not past tense form (no ed) When and how do we use the Past Simple Tense? Here are some of the basic and most common uses. For actions at a definite time in the past He sold his car last week. For past states or habits When he was young he lived in a small flat. Time expressions used with past simple tense: yesterday, last week/month/year, ago, then, in 1989,

Past Continuous Tense

Another past tense in English is the Past Continuous Tense, also known as Past Progressive. How do we form it? It is a complex form, rather similar to the present continuous. The first part is the auxiliary verb be in the past tense (was, were) in the correct person and number. The second part is the main verb, to which we add ing. You should note some special cases of spelling changes when you add ing, the same as with present continuous.

NT111 ENGLESKI JEZIK PREDAVANJE BR. 1 Question forms are made relatively simply, by inversion of the auxiliary and the subject. Negative forms are made by inserting not after the auxiliary. When and how do we use the Past Simple Tense? Here are some of the basic and most common uses. For actions in progress at a stated time in the past, sometimes interrupted by another past action. I was watching TV at 8 oclock last night. He was reading when suddenly the lights went off. They were reading while he was working. To describe the background to the events in a story about past. We were walking in the woods. It was raining hard Time expressions used with past continuous: while, when, as NOTE: The difference is use between the Past Simple and the Past Continuous. Past Continuous is used Past Simple is used

For actions in progress at a stated time in the For actions completed at a stated time in past. the past. I was working at 8 oclock last night. For simultaneous actions in the past They were reading while he was working. I finished my work at 10 oclock last night. For actions that happened one after another in the past He slipped, fell over and broke his leg. To describe the background in a story about For past actions that will not happen again past Ivo Andric wrote several novels. We were walking in the woods. It was raining hard

Some Other Ways to Talk about Past Actions and States (Would, Used To)
Here are two more expressions, which are rather similar. For repeated actions in the past Would + verb We would go to the seaside every year when I was a child. For repeated actions, mostly past habits, and past states Used to + verb I used to eat a lot of chocolate (but now I dont). He used to have long hair in the 70s. NOTE: the main verb is NOT in the past! This is how to make questions and negative forms.

NT111 ENGLESKI JEZIK PREDAVANJE BR. 1 Would is like every auxiliary. For questions: inversion with the subject Would he go to the seaside every year when he was a child? For negatives, insert not He wouldnt go to the seaside Used to is like every verb in the past tense For questions, insert did and make inversion Did she use to eat a lot of chocolate? For negatives: insert not after did He didnt use to like computers.

Question Forms for Unknown Subjects

One more grammar detail that will be useful for our revision. We practiced asking questions. There is something that you used successfully, but now we stress it as a rule. Remember some personal information that you asked and answered about? We will use some of these examples. When we ask questions, we want to know something, we ask for information that we dont know. That piece of information can the subject of the sentence, or it can be something else, the object, the place, the time, reason, etc. If we ask about the unknown subject, the question word is usually who or what, and it comes before the verb. We do NOT use the auxiliary do, does or did, we use just the main verb in the correct tense. Who lives in Pancevo? NOT: Who does live in Pancevo? For all other situations, for asking about the unknown object, place, time, etc, we use the normal question word order with an auxiliary do, does or did.
