Police:
Stabbing
victim
has died
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Voorhees Sun
Outgoing Voorhees Township
Police Chief Keith Hummel,
along with Camden County Pros-
ecutor Warren Faulk announced
last week that a Voorhees man
stabbed earlier this month had
died.
Michael Taylor, 52, of
Voorhees, died at Cooper Hospital
in Camden at 9 p.m. on June 24,
where he had been treated since
being stabbed earlier in the
month. He entered the hospital in
critical condition on June 5.
On June 6, Taylor was alleged-
ly stabbed by his upstairs neigh-
bor, 62-year-old David Giordano,
on the 3000 block of Sherry Court
in Voorhees, not far from the in-
tersection of Burnt Mill Road and
White Horse Road.
Giordano allegedly dumped
water onto Taylors exotic pet
birds, which he kept on the porch.
Taylor was stabbed multiple
times after confronting Giordano.
Giordano surrendered to the
Voorhees Police Department on
June 26.
Giordano, who was initially
charged with attempted murder,
is expected to be charged with
murder, said Jason Laughlin, a
spokesman for the county prose-
cutors office. Giordano appeared
in court on June 26 and was or-
dered held on $650,000 bail.

Mike Heaney dedicated his life
to swimming.
The 25-year-old Voorhees na-
tive grew up learning and loving
how to swim at the Downs Farms
Swim Club on Haddonfield-Berlin
Road in Cherry Hill.
The Bishop Eustace grad went
on to become tri-captain of the
swim team at The College of New
Jersey his senior year. During his
final season in 2009, Heaney cap-
tured the Metropolitan Confer-
ence Championship Title in the
200 backstroke event with a time
of 1:51.81, which broke TCNJs
own school record.
Things were going well for
Heaney, friends said. He was liv-
ing on his own and working for
Verizon.
But on April 11, all that
changed.
Heaney was on his way to reg-
ister his car, which had been im-
pounded for outdated registra-
tion. While riding his bike to pay
for his registration, he was hit on
his bicycle by a car in northern
New Jersey.
He sustained injuries and has
recently awoken from an induced
coma. He has spent the past few
months in a rehabilitation facili-
ty.
Because of all the medical bills
his family will incur, the swim-
ming community is rallying

Mike, a swim-a-thon on Sunday,
July 15 to raise money to help the
family. The event will be held at
the Downs Farms Swim Club
from 7:30 to noon.
Joanna Melchiorre, a volun-
teer aquatics director at the swim
club, has seen the impact
Heaneys swimming career has
had on the community firsthand.
Shes been volunteering at Downs
Farms for more than 10 years, she
said, and also worked with
Heaneys father, a Tri-County
Swimming representative.
Hes a very happy boy. I re-
member when he was little, he
was always happy when he was
swimming. His mom said he has
a lot of friends, Melchiorre said.
Friends near and far have
stepped up to organize the event
and provide assistance to the
Heaneys.
Heaneys co-workers at Verizon
donated blood to help their friend
in the hospital. Swim club staff is
also working on getting the word
out about the event, going pool-to-
pool in Cherry Hill and Voorhees
to invite coaches, teams, swim-
mers and friends to the fundrais-
ing event.
Melchiorre said she expects a
big turnout during the event,
which costs $10 at the door to
enter the club the day of. Swim-
mers can also garner additional
pledges to swim and to support
Heaney.
Melchiorre said the swim clubs
she and staff members have visit-
ed already promised they would
be in attendance.
I think its going to be wonder-
ful to see how many people know
and love him, Melchiorre said.
Heaney deserves a helping
hand, Melchiorre said, after
doing so much for others. The
business/finance major has also
spent time as a volunteer fire-
fighter in the community and is
described by friends and family
as a hard worker.
Swimming families are just
wonderful and willing to do any-
thing, Melchiorre said.

in our opinion
F
rom all of us at Elauwit Media
to all of our loyal readers, we
wish you the happiest and
healthiest Fourth of July.
As rough as things are in our coun-
try our economy is still poor, unem-
ployment is extremely high and the
Phillies cant seem to win a baseball
game anymore things could be a lot
worse for us.
A quick glance at the world around
us reveals just how fortunate we are, as
Americans, to have the freedoms we
do. And lets face it, these freedoms we
often take for granted.
Imagine, for just a moment, what it
must be like to live in Syria.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in China, where we recently learned of
how real and barbaric the nations one-
child-only policy really is.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in Egypt, where theres still instability
and a lack of confidence in the nations
parliament.
We live in a nation where, despite
our differences, we manage to co-exist
peacefully for the most part.
We live in a nation where our Con-
gress and where the office of the presi-
dent have functioned and survived for
236 years.
We live in a nation where, for the
most part, were free to do as we please.
This simply isnt the case in many
corners of the world.
Today, we give thanks for the liber-
ties won for us hundreds of years ago.
We give thanks for the many women
and men who have made incredible
sacrifices to protect these freedoms in
battle in Afghanistan and Iraq and
countless other places in the Middle
East and abroad.
We remember their families who,
like they, have also made sacrifices by
saying goodbye so we can do things as
simple as having a barbecue sometime
today.
Finally, we give thanks for all that
America is and stands for. It may not
be perfect, but a quick glance of the
news shows: life could be much worse.
Happy Fourth of July
A quick look at world news a reminder of how fortunate we Americans are
Independence Day 2012
July 4, 2012 today we give thanks
for all the liberties we have as
Americans. We give thanks for the
sacrifices our miliary continues to
make. We give thanks that we are
American.

On June 3, the annual Ashland
Church Community Picnic was
held, and what a great event it
was. The desire was to put on a
churchwide event that would also
serve the broader community in
which we live, whether or not
they would call Ashland Church
their home. And that is just what
happened. The picnic offered
beautiful weather, good food (and
lots of it) and plenty of fun activi-
ties for all ages. The kids really
enjoyed the two human hamster
balls and the foam pit, as well as
the rest of the games offered by
the Games 2 You people.
We also witnessed dozens of
happy and wet kids on the slip-n-
slide. Combined together, the kids
went home washed, rinsed and
tumble dried from going to the
slide, the foam and then into the
hamster balls. Entertainment
aside, the reality that communi-
ties came together was a beauti-
ful thing. Across the churchyard
people were able to make new ac-
quaintances, reconnect with old
friends, and just having a laid
back, enjoyable afternoon to relax
and play.
Even after the alleged incom-
ing storm lead to the picnic to be
called an hour early, a few dozen
people stayed to brave the weath-
er only to find more beautiful sun
and some good volleyball games
to carry the event on way into the
afternoon.
