Board approves fees for pilot laptop program

The Menomonee Falls School Board approved the fee structure for the district pilot program of providing laptops for ninth grade students Director of Technology and Assessment Jeff Nennig explained that parents will have two options. The first option calls for a $10 maintenance fee along with per incident charges for damage. The second option calls for $35 fee for accidental damage. Director of Business Services Jeff Gross said that while the district considered taking out an insurance rider to cover potential damage, discussions with officials in the Pewaukee district which has a program providing laptops for students in seventh through 12 grades indicated that district had an insurance policy for one year before dropping it. As a result, Menomonee Falls will be self-insuring for damage to laptops. Gross said that the issue that Pewaukee faced had to do with cracked screens, as the district was using tablets initially. Pewaukee later dropped tablets in favor of a more sturdy product. Board member David Noshay emphasized that the laptop program is a one year trial. Were still getting our feet wet, investigating it, Noshay said. Superintendent Patricia Greco added that while technology is a tool for learning, it will not replace instruction. Technology will never replace strong instruction. It is a tool, a tool in the workplace. It will be a tool for students in their workplace, which happens to be school, Greco said. They will never replace all the effective strategies for instruction. Etc. The board selected Buelow Vetter to provide legal services on retainer basis. Gross said that while the district was pleased with its existing legal services, it sought bids as a way of saving money. Gross said the agreement is for three years and the firm will lock in its rate. The district can terminate the agreement at any time. The district annual meeting will be held at the Menomonee Falls

Dear Dr. Winter, my teeth are not in good shape. I have soft enamel that decays easily. Previous dental work is deteriorating, there is an odor coming from a back molar. I no longer want to continue to deal with never ending cavities and bad taste. I am interested in implant fixed dentures (probably mini implants due to cost). Dear Jan, before you write off your remaining teeth, it is important to realize that strategic saving of teeth can help protect implants as teeth have ligaments which act as shock absorbers that implants lack. Many people feel that it is easier to extract all teeth and have implants and for some people that is the best course of action. However, if there are nice teeth that are healthy, it is not always prudent to remove them just to place implants as there are always risks, Drs. Falls District approves changes to athletic handbook

The Menomonee Falls School Board approved the athletic handbook June 25 with a change that will take grade point into consideration. Currently, the district follows the WIAA and Greater Metro Conference requirements that students who receive failing grades in two or more courses are ineligible to compete. While the district will retain that provision, it added language stating that students participating in athletics have to maintain a grade point average of 1.7. Board member Lori Blodorn explained that the board sought a comfort level in adding the cumulative grade point average requirement, which students would be required to maintain over the long term. Blodorn said that students who would fall below that grade point level would trigger an intervention strategy. As long as the student participates in the individual strategy the student can maintain their eligibility. Board member David Noshay explained that the Response to Intervention (RTI) process, which will be implemented as part of the grade point average, applies to all students in the district. Noshay said it ensures were giving all students as much academic support as they can maintain. The board also approved an amendment that will change a practice in which students who are ineligible for one third of a season in one sport can serve that suspension by participating in another sport. The amendment would drop that practice and require that a student with a penalty in their main sport to serve the penalty in that sport. During a committee discussion earlier in the evening, high school athletic director Dave Petroff said the practice has been allowed in the past as long as the coach the student would be serving the penalty in approves the request and as long as the student completes the season in good standing. It takes the person who committed the violation and puts them in a positive environment with other athletes participating (in a sport), Petroff said. I have a problem with that, Noshay said. They went beyond what they were supposed to do by leaps and bounds, this isnt a grey area, they were penalized and they get an out, Noshay said. I think that is fair to the other students on the team. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

Falls taxpayer group seeks referendum on village capital expenditures

The Menomonee Falls Taxpayers Association has joined the debate regarding financial issues surrounding the Menomonee Falls Radisson Hotel. The hotel was constructed through $17.6 in general obligation funds from the village. However, the hotel ownership group has missed the first two payments on principal and the village is seeking to foreclose on the hotel. Meanwhile, subcontractors have attended the past four Village Board meetings seeking payment for work done at the hotel. "No more telling example could be conceived as to why municipalities and government entities should NEVER be involved in financing any private development projects or chase companies with taxpayer incentives," the Menomonee Falls Taxpayer Association stated on its website. The association went on to describe the village financing of the hotel as "a colossal blunder." In a separate email response, taxpayer association President Steve Welcenbach said: "Government has no business loaning money for a Hotel or any business for that matter, that is the role of private banking and venture capitalists." The taxpayer association announced it will begin a petition drive for a referendum that would require any village capital expenditures of $1 million or more would have to be approved in a binding referendum. Welcenbach later added that "there will be a presence at the (July 2 Village Board) meeting. Right now we want to hear what the Village board has to say." By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor
