Learning Oasis Fact Sheet

By customizing the learning experience for each student, Learning Oasis takes differentiated instruction to a new level and redefines the traditional approach to assessment and instruction.
What is Learning Oasis? Learning Oasis is a personalized learning platform that utilizes Lexile measures to differentiate students reading and writing practice. The system provides an engaging, online environment where students can assume more control of their learning by completing self-selected reading and writing activities at the right level of challenge to support literacy growth. And because Learning Oasis uses Lexile measures to target and score these activities, educators and parents can monitor students ongoing progress toward state and the new Common Core standards. Features of Learning Oasis Creates a student-centric learning environment that supports key components of skill acquisition: targeted practice at each students level, real-time corrective feedback, intensive practice to increase the volume of daily activity, distributed practice that provides appropriate activities over time, and self-directed practice. Blends assessment with instruction to collect valuable performance data without students experiencing the pressure of being tested or teachers compromising already limited academic time. Integrates Lexile measures and computer-adaptive engines to deliver content and create test items in real-time based on each students unique reading and writing abilities and interests. Provides immediate scoring, feedback and reporting. Extends learning time and promotes the home-classroom connection by providing anytime, anywhere access to targeted reading and writing activities during the school year and over summer break. Connects day-to-day progress with year-to-year summative tests by reporting on the common, developmental Lexile scale. Provides multiple measures over time for more reliable estimates of students reading and writing abilities, as opposed to year-end assessments.

The Learning Oasis Experience Reading: Learning Oasis immerses students in highinterest and subject-relevant text that is targeted to their Lexile measure. It comprises a growing collection of tens of thousands of periodical and newspaper articles on various topics at different levels, ranging from 300L to more than 1300L. While reading articles within Learning Oasis, students are periodically presented with auto-generated cloze items: passages in which selected words have been deleted. Students complete each cloze by selecting the best response from four choices: the original word from the article plus three other words that are syntactically correct. Learning Oasis uses these answers to update students Lexile measures, and then automatically offers selections of appropriate and increasing text complexity based on continued growth. Writing: Learning Oasis is designed to enhance students writing ability, and convention knowledge. Students respond to writing prompts on a range of content-area topics and their responses are scored by an automatic essay-scoring engine, as well as by the student and teacher using a state-specific rubric. Students can also evaluate their ability to correct four types of convention errors: capitalization, grammar, punctuation and spelling. They have three opportunities to correct each error type embedded in text that is targeted to their Lexile measure and receive feedback after each attempt. Vocabulary: Word Explorers helps students build and understand the connections between words. The game challenges students to select wordseach targeted to the students levelthat are related to a given word or phrase. The speed of the game and the difficulty of the words increase as students progress through the levels. Concept Clue also helps students understand the connections between words. Learning Oasis provides two synonymous words and asks students to select the one that means the same from a list of five choices. Students have three opportunities to choose the correct answer. Learning Oasis scores their responses and provides real-time instructional feedback after each selection.

The Lexile Framework for Reading evaluates reading ability and text complexity on the same developmental scale. Unlike other measurement systems, the Lexile Framework determines reading ability based on actual assessments, rather than general age or grade levels. Recognized as the standard for matching readers with texts, tens of millions of students worldwide receive a Lexile measure that helps them find targeted readings from the more than 400 million articles, books and websites that have been measured. Lexile measures connect learners of all ages with resources at the right level of challenge and monitor their progress toward state and national proficiency standards. The Lexile Framework for Writing is an innovative tool for differentiating writing instruction and monitoring growth in writing ability. It expresses student writing ability on the same Lexile scale as reading ability, providing an easy-to-understand language for expressing student writing growth and reinforcing the importance of reading in the development of writing skills. A Lexile writer measure is an estimate of a students ability to express language in writing based on factors related to the level of the words used and how those words are combined into sentences. Like Lexile reader measures, Lexile writer measures were designed to monitor writing progress within and across school years.
