PASTORS CORNER
Dear Parishioners, Todays Gospel passage from St. Mark invites us to Have faith! Both in the astonishing healing of Jairus twelve-year-old daughter and the healing of the woman with a hemorrhage, who only touched his cloak, every deepest desire for healing that we have is brought to the fore and given new hope. Even 2000+ years after Jesus walked the earth, we never seem to give up on the possibility of a miracle, and we consider those who have given up to be most pitiful. In preparation for our hearing of todays gospel proclamation, the first reading from The Book of Wisdom makes a startling declaration: God did not make death. Well, if God did not make death, who did? God made all things didnt he? As far as I can see, the only way out of this dilemma is to declare death as non-existent. And as a matter of fact, that is exactly the claim of Wisdom. Death is OUR misunderstanding: the reading goes on to explain that, God formed man to be imperishable. For all of us when we are faced with the possible death of a loved one or, even more poignantly, with the inevitability of our own death, we tend to soften the edges by referring to his, her, or our own passing. I dare say that we dont really stop to realize that this expression is the proper Christian outlook for us to have. After all, O death, where is your sting? For us Christians we pass from lifeto lifeto life: life in the wombto life on this earthto life eternal. Deacon Manuel just recently made the same claim at the memorial for Officer Danny Staggs when he declared that Danny was not dead, but never so more alive after all, thats what heaven is! There is a lot of talk these days about the interplay of science and faith. The hardcore scientist has a real problem with the whole faith jumping off point, Doncha know? But even science itself these days is begging the question, does ANYTHING really die? The periodic table of elements seems to keep evolving; black holes and black matter remain mysteries; and the tiniest atom and the whole universe share the same dynamics of existence. The great Steven Hawking has come to the conclusion that nothing is only a temporary stateor something. (That just makes my head hurt.) Anyway, with all that remaining unfinished business and that we dont know exactlyyet kind of talk in the world of science, is GOD and immortality really such a stretch? So lets hear it for the latest Christian act of faith that says we are born into eternal life! And let us take heart in Jesus who proclaims throughout the New Testament that, faith saves. For if we have faith, then we have hope; and if we have faith and hope, then we are empowered by Gods own Spirit to truly love. And if we truly love as Jesus loves, we merit eternal life! No wonder they call it The Good News. Msgr. Richard
