MPD 3rd PCT Sector 4 Highlights

Cell Phone Theft

Cell phone theft is a major problem in Minneapolis as well as the rest of the nation. Typically the robber will steal an unattended phone or snatch the phone from the users hand and run. The stolen phones are then sold on the black market. A cell phones resale value can range from $100 - $300. WHAT YOU CAN DO TO REDUCE YOUR CHANCES OF BEING A VICTIM Using your phone in public makes you much more vulnerable to being robbed or assaulted. You should be paying attention to whats going on around you and who is near you, rather than paying attention to someone on the other end of a phone conversation. Keep your phone in your pocket, bag or in a phone pouch instead of in your hand where someone can grab it.

Keep your phone close to you. Dont leave it on a table, desk, or counter in a public place. Use a password to protect your phone. It will make it more difficult for a thief to use your phone or access the information you have stored on it. Do not store any information on your phone that you wouldnt want others to have (e.g. bank and credit card online passwords, personal information, etc.). Keep the phone number for reporting your phone missing or stolen in a safe place. The cell phone provider can probably disable the phone remotely. Back up the information on your cell phone. Most cell phone companies offer backup assistance through their phone plans. You may be able to back up your phone data on you home computer as well. Download an anti-theft application. If your phone is lost or stolen you might be able to locate it, wipe it (i.e. remove the data from the phone) or make the phone unusable to the thief. Contact you cell phone provider for more detailed information.

Tips on how to prevent home burglaries:

Keep your doors locked at all timeseven when you are home. Check your windows to make sure they are secured. Basement windows may need additional reinforcement. For additional information about window security, go to: www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/police/crimeprevention/docs/WINSEC.pdf Be extra cautious about your neighborhood. Trust your instincts. Call 911 if you see anything suspicious. Talk to your neighbors about these incidents and ask them to be alert to suspicious activity. We need everyones help. If you dont have a block club or it has been inactive, now is the time to get active. When electronics or larger items are stolen, providing serial numbers of stolen items to the responding officers is important to help in the recovery of your items and in the prosecution of the suspect(s).

What you can do now:

Take some time now and document the serial numbers of any valuables that have numbers on it. o Take pictures of your belongings. This would not only help in a criminal case but has helped a few residents filing insurance claims when they had a fire in their home. o Keep this list and photos somewhere safe, like your office or safe deposit box If you are a victim of burglary, report it immediately by calling 911. Inform the responding officers if you see something that may have been handled or left behind by the suspect (cigarette butt, pop can, etc.).
