JULY 8, 2012 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Many who Heard him were Astonished

There are many times when we say, Tell me what I want to hear, and dont confuse me with facts. And we dont take kindly to someone who might be bold enough to snuff out our expectations. The biggest problem with such an attitude is not that we miss out on the truth or the facts, but that we miss out on the new and surprising gifts others can give us. Like the townspeople in todays Gospel story, we too often refuse to allow others to display the talents that can be good news for us. Todays readings call for hospitality and faith and discernment. Hospitality opens the doors of our hearts and minds to the stranger among us, no matter how familiar he or she may seem to be. Faith enables us to accept the gifts of others, no matter how alarming or strange they may seem to be. Discernment helps us discover the prophets in our midst, no matter how amazing they may seem to be. Hospitality, faith, and discernmentcultivate these. Then, nobody can bring bad news.

Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

This is just a reminder that even though our format for Eucharistic Adoration at Christ the King has changed during the summer months, we still need all of the adorers who signed up for specific Adoration times on Thursdays, to continue to come at those times during the Summer. Those who are normally signed up for later hours, can join us during the hours mentioned below in order to fill in for Adorers who are on vacation. We also welcome any new adorers who would like to join us. During the Summer, our Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle will be on Thursdays from 9am until 8pm. On the first Thursday of July and August, the Eucharist will be exposed for adoration from 9am until Midnight. We will return to our regular schedule on Thursday, September 5th. Please help us during these summer months, to keep our church open for this wonderful opportunity to pray and spend quality time with Jesus! With everything going on in the world today, and with the Church being challenged in our own country, we need Jesus help more than ever! Jesus gave us the warmth of the Summer as a gift to enjoy, let us give Him the warmth in our hearts to show our love and appreciation in return. bill@ctklombard.org

Faithful Stewards for the Parish 25th Anniversary of the Holy Trinity, Our Lady of Fatima Prayer Community event
Many thanks to all those who gave their time and effort for Christ the King Parish on a very busy, very hot weekend. The events were not as spectacular as the Lilac Parade or the Mutt Strut, but every bit of your effort was greatly appreciated by those whom we helped. Special mention must also go to the Lombard PD, who provided three officers and a CSO to help us with traffic, especially on Highland Ave., during the Eucharistic Procession. Thank you to Jim Krupka, parishioner and Knight, Loretta Kearns, Herb Newman, Dan Brink, Dick Bullard, Phil Hanson, Sgt. Bud Marks, Trish Mayer (all from the village of Lombard) I think it was a very successful and safe operation due to everyone's efforts - and I know that the outdoor thermometer in my truck registered 100 degrees as we rounded the corner at 16th & Norbury. We were also able to rescue one elderly marcher who pooped out at 17th & Highland after having had surgery less than a week ago. She very much appreciated the ride. I also should not neglect to mention the men from Christ the King Parish and prayer community, who walked with those processing, to assist them and help to keep them close to the curb, as we progressed. Report from Marv, who assisted us in this event and a cantor of CTK. From the Pastor: The Parish staff and I would like to thank the Village President, Bill Mueller for allowing the Police department and CSO, to assist us in this community building event. I would like to thank the Police Department and CSO members listed for their willingness to assist us. Also a note of thanks to our parish operations manager, Javier and his associate, Tony who coordinated the procession and made sure we were all safe, including the Blessed Sacrament. The community that works together, stays together. It was so nice to have this procession of our Lord throughout the streets of Lombard. What a wonderful witness! Fr. Peter Jarosz, Pastor Christ the King Parish Village of Lombard

STEWARDSHIP SAINT FOR JULY | Blessed Kateri Teckakwitha

Blessed Kateri Teckakwitha is the first Native American to have been beatified. Born in 1656 on the south bank of the Mohawk River near Auriesville, New York, Tekakwitha was the daughter of a non-Christian Mohawk chieftain and an Algonquin mother who was a Catholic convert, educated and baptized by French missionaries. When Teckakwitha was four years old, a smallpox epidemic claimed the lives of her parents and baby brother. She survived the disease but her face was left severely scarred and her eyesight impaired. At age 20, after having taken religious instruction at a nearby mission, Teckakwitha was baptized and given the name Kateri (Katherine). She vowed not to marry, which was considered aberrant in her tribal culture and created great difficulties for her. Kateri was persecuted by her fellow villagers for her faith. A year later, finding the persecution unbearable, Kateri fled her village and walked 200 miles through forests, rivers and swamps to settle in a Christian mission in Sault St. Louis, near Montreal. The remainder of her young life was dedicated to prayer and devotion to the Eucharist, teaching children at the mission and caring for the sick and the elderly. She died of an illness in 1680 when she was 24 years old. A profound commitment to stewardship is revealed in a quote attributed to Kateri: I am not my own; I have given myself to Jesus. He must be my only love. The state of helpless poverty that may befall me if I do not marry does not frighten me. All I need is a little food and a few pieces of clothing. With the work of my hands I shall always earn what is necessary and what is left over Ill give to my relatives and to the poor. If I should become sick and unable to work, then I shall be like the Lord on the cross. He will have mercy on me and help me, I am sure. Kateri is known as the Lily of the Mohawks and devotion to her is responsible for establishing Native American ministries in Catholic churches throughout the United States and Canada. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1980 and her feast day is July 14.
