Indroduction In Malaysia, the growth rate of the older population is faster than the younger population. Thats mean Malaysia is moving towards an aging or elderly population. The determinants of aging population in our country due to increase in health care system, reduction in fertility and mortality of elderly. Elderly is defined as people aged 60 years or older. In 2000, Malaysias population was 23.3 million, of which 6.3% were in elderly group. The expected proportion of elderly in year 2020 is 9.9%. Depression is the most common psychiatric disorder among elderly. Previous studies had demonstrate about 14% to 18% had depression. Depression is a disorder that characterized by sadness, changes appetite, altered sleep pattern, feeling of dejection or hopelessness and sometimes suicidal tendencies. Objectives : General : To determine the associated factor of depression among elderly in Bandar Baharu, Kedah. Specific : 1. To estimate the prevalence of depression among elderly in Bandar Baharu, Kedah. 2. To determine the risk factor of depression among elderly in Bandar Baharu, Kedah.

Hypothesis There is a significant prevalence of depression among elderly in Bandar Baharu area.

There is an association between elderly depression and sociodemographic characteristic. There is association between elderly depression and chronic illness. There is association between elderly depression and function disability. There is association between elderly depression and cognitive impairment. Methodology A cross sectional study will be use among elderly age 60 and above who live in Bandar Baharu. It will be including all villages in Bandar Baharu. The structured questionnaire consisted of 4 parts. 1. Part A consist of socio-demographic, socio-economic and clinical data. 2. Part B consist of The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-30) 3. Part 3 consist of The Barthel Index on Activity of Daily Living (ADL) 4. Part 4 cinsist of The Elderly Assessment Questionnaire (ECAQ)

Expected Result/Benefit Justification Depression among elderly in primary care patient is a serious problem with significant morbidity and mortality. Depression also decreases an individuals quality of life and increase dependence on others. If depression is left untreated, there will be significant clinical and social implications in the lives of the elderly. The study will determine the associated factor of depression among elderly and its prevalence so further intervention can be made in managing elderly at district level.
