Gentlemen Theaffectionatesentimentsofesteem&approbationwhichyouaresogoodastoexpresstowardsme, onbehalfoftheDanburyBaptistassociation,givemethehighestsatisfaction.mydutiesdictatea faithful&zealouspursuitoftheinterestsofmyconstituents,and,inproportionastheyarepersuaded ofmyfidelitytothoseduties,thedischargeofthembecomesmore&morepleasing. Believingwithyouthatreligionisamatterwhichliessolelybetweenman&hisgod,thatheowes accounttononeotherforhisfaithorhisworship,thatthelegitimatepowersofgovernmentreach actionsonlyandnotopinions,IcontemplatewithsovereignreverencethatactofthewholeAmerican peoplewhichdeclaredthattheirlegislatureshould"makenolawrespectinganestablishmentof religion,orprohibitingthefreeexercisethereof"thusbuildingawallofeternalseparationbetween Church&State.Congressthusinhibitedfromactsrespectingreligion,andtheExecutiveauthorisedonly toexecutetheiracts,Ihaverefrainedfromprescribingeventhoseoccasionalperformancesof devotion,practicedindeedbytheExecutiveofanothernationasthelegalheadofitschurch,but subjecthere,asreligiousexercisesonlytothevoluntaryregulationsanddisciplineofeachrespective sect, [Jeffersonfirstwrote:"confiningmyselfthereforetothedutiesofmystation,whicharemerely temporal,beassuredthatyourreligiousrightsshallneverbeinfringedbyanyactofmineandthat." Theselineshecrossedoutandthenwrote:"concurringwith"havingcrossedoutthesetwowords,he wrote:"Adheringtothisgreatactofnationallegislationinbehalfoftherightsofconscience"nexthe crossedoutthesewordsandwrote:"Adheringtothisexpressionofthesupremewillofthenationin behalfoftherightsofconscienceIshallseewithfriendlydispositionstheprogressofthosesentiments whichtendtorestoretomanallhisnaturalrights,convincedthathehasnonaturalrightsinopposition tohissocialduties."] Ireciprocateyourkindprayersfortheprotection&blessingofthecommonfatherandcreatorofman, andtenderyouforyourselves&theDanburyBaptist[yourreligious]associationassurancesofmyhigh respect&esteem.
