Date Issued: 21 April 2005

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course presents discussion on reference models: OSI models, network layers, industry standards, network topologies, IP addressing, subnet masking, TCP/IP network layer protocols, networking components, basic network design, overview of networking and communication software.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the term, the student is expected to be familiar with data communication between and among computers and design a network applying all the knowledge acquired. Specifically, the student should be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Apply the OSI model to describe, in detail, data communications between two PCs. Describe the evolution of networking devices. Build a simple network of hosts, cables, hubs and routers, given a simple topology. Address a network, given a topology and starting IP address. Describe basic inter-network processes. Make basic design choices involving networking media. Design, build, and document the wiring part of a network installation. Understand basic electrical and electronic issues in networks. Be aware of the existence of network management tools.
