MOVIE REVIEW ON THE 3 IDIOTS

SUMMARY

The very good movie entitled “THE 3 IDIOTS” starred by Farhan Qureshi, Raju Rastogi
and Rancchoddas “Rancho” Shyamaldas Chanchad. This movie is about the finding of the lost
friend(Rancho) of Farhan and Rastogi with Chatur Ramalingam or “Silencer” and stories
brought about their flashbacks. It brought to us the plight of engineering students at the Imperial
College of Engineering (ICE). But with their own selves, Farhan has dreamt of becoming a
wildlife photographer. Raju wanted to alleviate the undesired situations of his family which
caused his fears, and grow even bigger. On another side of the coin, Rancho is a wealthy genius
who studies for life with the perspective that learning must come enjoyable. With machines as
his passion, he’s always on the top without effort and mental torture on his part, just because he
simply loved learning machines. Viru Sahastrabudhhe (ViruS), the ICE Director and Professor,
challenged students in all sorts, giving them mental pressure and teaching them to be always on
top. In contrast, ViruS model student is Chatur Ramalingam or “Silencer”, who sees a high rank
at the prestigious college as his ticket to higher social status, corporate power, and therefore
wealth. Chatur conforms to the expectations of the system. He memorized things he, himself,
didn’t understand. Meanwhile, Rancho also fell in love with Virus’ medical student daughter Pia
when he, Raju and Farhan crash her sister’s wedding banquet in order to get a free meal, in the
process further infuriating ViruS. Furthermore, Pia’s brother also committed suicide because of
her father’s (ViruS) high expectations towards him. This movie also tackled friendship without
constraints, shown in all challenges and adventures the three had including Rastogi’s suicide
attempt. With that unusual experience, change has dawned upon Farhan and Raju’s mind, and
they have adopted Rancho’s outlook. Farhan has decided to pursue his love for photography,
while Raju has taken an unorthodox approach to an interview for a corporate job. He went on in
his interview in plaster and a wheelchair and he gave a series of non-conformal and frank
answers that really touched the hearts of his interviewers and made him in. However, ViruS is
unsympathetic and defeat is beyond his way. And so he intentionally made the final exam as
hard as possible so that Raju will not pass and eventually will not be able to graduate. However,
the lovely Pia heard of the inhumane plan of her father, she made her best to help her friends
even that action was not an acceptable one. Pia had gotten ViruS’ spare keys and gave them to
Rancho for the final exams to be stolen from the office of his father. But, sad to say, Virus found
out the real score that caused them dismissal from the venerable institution. In the latter part of
the movie, we have witnessed that regardless of the stone fist of ViruS as felt by them, they still
had a pure and courageous heart in helping Viru’s daughter Mona who was about to give birth.
The three, with the help of other ICE students, humbly applied their knowledge on machines for
the sake of pursuing life. Silencer, on another hand, had chosen to run away from the situation.
After the successful delivery of the child, ViruS reconciled with Rancho and his friends
and allowed them to take their final exams and they graduated. Rancho topped the class, and for
how many decades passed the ViruS’ Pen, finally, is handed on to Rancho whom ViruS
considered as brilliant and extraordinary student.
Ten years passed and having lost contact with Rancho, who disappeared during the
graduation party. His friends Raju and Farhan decisively went on a journey to find him. They are
joined by Chatur, now a wealthy and successful businessman, who joins them, shamelessly
confident that he defeated Rancho. Chatur is also looking to seal a deal with a famous scientist
and prospective business associate named Phunsukh Wangdu. Chatur sees Wangdu, who has
hundreds of patents, as his ticket to further social prestige. When they find Rancho’s house, they
walk into his father’s funeral, and find a completely different Rancho. Nonetheless, the real
Rancho was force to reveal the real story behind his identity. And so Raju and Farhan took Pia
from her wedding day to Suhas by performing the same tricks with his material possessions, and
having Raju turn up to the ceremony disguised as the groom and fleeing with Pia in public.
When they arrived in Ladakh, they see a group of enthusiastic Ladakhi children who are
motivated by love of knowledge. Pia and the fake Rancho rekindle their love, while Chatur has
mocked and abused Rancho the schoolteacher before walking away. When his friends asked
what his real name is, he revealed that it is Phunsukh Wangdu and called up Chatur, who has
turned his back, to turn around and meet his prospective business partner. Chatur is horrified and
fell on his knees, kept on begging Phunsukh Wangdu (the fake Rancho) to establish the business
relationship he had been dreaming of.

REACTION

The 3 Idiots speaks of a tested friendship Rancho (Aamir Khan), Farhan (Madhavan) and
Raju (Sharman Joshi) have established. They were enrolled as engineering students in one of the
top colleges in the country. Like typical professional colleges in the competitive world that we
are into, grades matter. Thus, the system forced the students to go beyond their limits that
caused them mental pressure rather than real learning. With almost every parent wanting their
child to be an engineer or a doctor, the director also delved on the lack of passion for the
profession amongst students. Nonetheless, the movie was really instrumental to wake up the
consciousness not only our dear professors on their methods of teaching but also to remind our
parents as regards the interest of their children. It also pointed out in the movie that students must
give proper value with their studies and never lose hope when they are bombarded by setbacks
and failures. Students must have courageous hearts to attain our deepest aspirations and dreams
in life. No one could hinder us as to what we want to be in the future, but we must not forget that
we have duties and responsibilities as students to be performed wholeheartedly and without any
reservation. We are not to blame anyone when we experience failures as we embark on our
journey in the school of life, we must look at ourselves and try to find out what caused us
failures.

MORAL LESSON

The movie has taught me simple things and yet I’ve found them substantial in my daily
existence as a child and student at the same time. As regards my attitudes as a child to my
parents, I am thankful that my parents did not put a hand on what I want to be in life. I really felt
their supports and love when I made my decision to get Education course and become a good
and Christian teacher someday. As a student, the movie has taught and reminded me of my
shortcomings. I must give my best at all times no matter what. High grades do not matter the
most but what is really important is the learning I must acquire and to put it into practice. In the
school of life, each has to do his/her own part and follow the desire of his/her heart that will give
real happiness.
