Living versus dying with dignity

Euthanasia is one of the most pressing social concerns of our era. In Greek it means easy death. More broadly, it means a method of killing or allowing the death of an individual who seems irreversibly sick or injured to die in a somewhat painless manner for the reason of mercy. It is also known as assisted suicide which is basically means to take a deliberate action with the express intention of ending a life to relieve intractable suffering. Euthanasia is often considered immoral. Many argue that it is wrong to subject even animals to such a terrible suffering. A person might be euthanized if he or she suffers from a terminal illness absolutely incurable due to which the person remains in constant pain and suffering. Some people consider that freeing the person from such suffering by letting him end his life before time is the solution while others believe that no matter how ill one is, living human is better than a corpse one day. It can be voluntary euthanasia and involuntary euthanasia. Voluntary euthanasia is conducted with consent of the person while involuntary euthanasia is conducted without consent. The decision in involuntary euthanasia is made by another person because the person is incapable to doing so himself. In the passive euthanasia, life sustaining treatments are withheld and in active, lethal substances or forces are used to end the persons life. The conventional doctrine is that there is such an important moral difference between the two, although the latter is sometimes permissible, the former is always forbidden. The doctrine may be challenged for several reasons. First of all, active euthanasia is in many cases more humane than passive euthanasia. Secondly, conventional doctrine leads to decisions concerning life and death on irrelevant grounds. Third, doctrine rests on a distinction between killing and letting die that itself has no moral importance. In some countries such as Netherland its legal and socially acceptable to have ones life terminated with the help of third party given a sufficient deterioration in the quality of life and death being inevitable. One has to be sound in mind and want ones death knowingly, intentionally, repeatedly and forcefully.

REASONS FOR EUTHANASIA

Unbearable pain as the reason for euthanasia-euthanasia advocates stress the cases of unbearable pain as a reason for euthanasia, but then they soon include a drugged state. I guess that is in case virtually no uncontrolled pain cases can be found then they say those people are drugged into a non pain state but they need to be euthanized from such state because it is not dignified. How do you measure dignity? No it will be euthanasia on demand

everyone whether it be a person with a life threatening illness or a chronic condition as a right to pain relief. Demanding a right to commit suicide-euthanasia is not about the right to die. Its about the right to kill. Suicide is a tragic, individual act but euthanasia about a private act. Its about letting one person facilitate the death of another. Should people be forced to stay alive? No. And neither the law nor the medical ethics requires that everything be done to keep a person alive. Insistence, against the persons wishes that death be postponed by every means available is contrary to law and practice. It would also be cruel and inhumane. I am certainly not ascribing to the defenders of euthanasia or assisted dying any motive but the desire to spare people unnecessary suffering Positive aspect of euthanasia is in allowing the person to maintain a dignity in death after a lifetime of dignity. It may provide them with a sense of empowerment in the face of being powerless against the progression of a chronic, perhaps fatal condition. It can also relieve some of the guilt and shame they may be feeling as they require increasing amounts of time and resources from relative especially estranged over years.
