PANEL PROCCESING MACHINERYFOR THE MODULAR FURNITURE INDUSTRY

This web site is updated with a brand new section allotted to Modulas Panel Processing Machinery. Please refer to it for details on all m/cs.

1. Bangalore as a city is cosmopolitan, the same spirit in an extended form was visible in the well laid out pavilions of IndiaWood. Not only Bangloreans, not just South Indians but Indians from all-over the country and many many international visitors were making the whole experience universal! Approximately 60 to 70% of visitors are here to up-date themselves or up-grade their work shops with machineries on offer here. And the most important player in the basic woodwork machineries markets in India is undoubtedly, Ahmedabad {Gujarat } based Jai Industries. As the industry knows, the Jai brand enjoys leadership position since two-three decades now. This time they were here with all their might 2. This part of the report will focus on the spectacular show put up by Jai and their successful experience in dealing with trade fairs. The importance of trade fairs was understood by Jai Industries since long back, starting with local / statewide machinery fairs to graduating to national fair like IndiaWood and International fairs like Ligna at Germany and various fairs in China, Vietnam , Sharjah etc. Mr Nikhil Shah, Mg. Director of Jai Industries is very clear about the role of trade fair in their overall marketing, You cant show-case all your m/cs, expertise and company strengths at a dealers outlet, neither you can do road shows or

campaigns like consumer products. So industrial fairs like this is the only opportunity. Only thing is you have to be selective about the fairs ! 3. This wisdom shows itself in how Jai Industries presents itself in their enclave of stalls. Two huge enclaves were devised, one was housing their conventional wood-working machineries and other to launch their new high end machinery Modula Series. You can gauge their success from the crowds thronging both their enclaves at any given day, any time. We were also visiting them every day and could make-out our self that Modula had aroused tremendous interest and inquiries, while wood-work machineries were darlings of the industry. 4. Their communication material was very catchy and informative display panels were doing all the necessary talking. Being in the media ourselves, we can see that communication is being utilized as one of the key factor of success by Jai. This Modula Series claims to provide global standards at a comfortable Indian cost. Our knowledge of the panel processing machineries, which are the back-bone of the modular furniture industry, also suggests that there definitely was a scope for such a plank between the very costly European m/cs, affordable but not-so-good Asian m/cs and cheap Indian m/cs; that offers globally compatible technology at homely install costs. 5. Impressed by the crowds visiting them every day, a total of 15,000 trade visitors as the company claims, the official daily bulletin of the IndiaWood printed a special coverage. Jt. Mg. Director Mr Nirav Shah informs us that We took this exhibition very seriously, worked very hard for almost 6 months preparing for the all important launching of ournew range of machinery, Modula Series. 6. We got truly overwhelming response, hundreds of machines were booked right there {a combined business of a few crores in five days} and more than a thousand inquiries are at negotiation stage. International buyers and associates have also shown keen interest. Thus putting Jai Industries on a fast track of growth.Mumbai is the economic centre of India, and Index tradefairs are very successful here. Thiswood & machine show last time attracted a very high turnout of 18,000 visitors.

Index W+M will help Jai bring its new Modula series' high end m/cs to the notice of this prominent market. Also SAARC and Middle east countries are the exhibition's targets We herewith promise complete satisfaction to all JAI-users in lieu of what theyve spent on it. Our whole system is quality oriented, weather it is a single piece or a large consignment. We never cut corners to save some money, never escape processes & testing to save time, never use inferior material and never indulge in unfair dealings to garner undue profits. Its our aim to give highest quality at fair price, because we know that long-lasting performance' of our product is the only formula for our survival.

Jai Electrical Industries Ltd.

If you compare Jai brand electric motor with other national brand, or compare Jai pump with western regions leading pump brand; you will notice they look similar, their quality and engineering standards also match but there is a significant price benefit in buying Jai product. And that is the biggest advantage of dealing with Big Companys quality assurance with small companys cost advantage! Large scale manufacturing, similar to any organized sector player, with cost effective use of resources and not-so-costly systems allows us to keep our prices under control. At the same time our big company attitude ensures that there is no adverse effect on product quality. S.W.O.T. ANALYSIS
The SWOT analysis provides information that is helpful in matching the firm's resources and capabilities to the competitive environment in which it operates. As such, it is instrumental in strategy formulation and selection. The following diagram shows how a SWOT analysis fits into an environmental scan:

Swot Analysis Framework

SWOT Matrix

STRENGTHS
A firm's strengths are its resources and capabilities that can be used as a basis for developing a competitive advantage. Examples of such strengths include:

patents strong brand names good reputation among customers cost advantages from proprietary know-how exclusive access to high grade natural resources favorable access to distribution networks

STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES
Opportunities S-O strategies W-O strategies Threats S-T strategies

W-T strategies

TQM focus areas

Customer satisfaction Product quality Plant reliability Waste elimination

Benefits achieved through TQM

Increased focus on the customer Mindset of 'continuous improvement' Better product quality Better systems and procedures Better cross-functional teamwork Increased plant reliability Waste elimination in offices and factories.

WEAKNESSES
The absence of certain strengths may be viewed as a weakness. For example, each of the following may be considered weaknesses:

lack of patent protection a weak brand name poor reputation among customers high cost structure

COLLEGE OF COMPUTER & MANAGEMENT STUDIES, VADU

58

Jai Electrical Industries Ltd.

lack of access to the best natural resources lack of access to key distribution channels

In some cases, a weakness may be the flip side of a strength. Take the case in which a firm has a large amount of manufacturing capacity. While this capacity may be considered a strength that competitors do not share, it also may be a considered a weakness if the large investment in manufacturing capacity prevents the firm from reacting quickly to changes in the strategic environment.

OPPORTUNITIES
The external environmental analysis may reveal certain new opportunities for profit and growth. Some examples of such opportunities include:

an unfulfilled customer need arrival of new technologies loosening of regulations removal of international trade barriers

THREATS
Changes in the external environmental also may present threats to the firm. Some examples of such threats include:

shifts in consumer tastes away from the firm's products emergence of substitute products new regulations increased trade barrier

COLLEGE OF COMPUTER & MANAGEMENT STUDIES, VADU

59

Jai Electrical Industries Ltd. THE S.W.O.T. MATRIX

A firm should not necessarily pursue the more lucrative opportunities. Rather, it may have a better chance at developing a competitive advantage by identifying a fit between the firm's strengths and upcoming opportunities. In some cases, the firm can overcome a weakness in order to prepare itself to pursue a compelling opportunity. To develop strategies that take into account the SWOT profile, a matrix of these factors can be constructed. The SWOT matrix (also known as a TOWS Matrix) is shown below:

SWOT / TOWS Matrix

S-O strategies pursue opportunities that are a good fit to the company's strengths. W-O strategies overcome weaknesses to pursue opportunities. S-T strategies identify ways that the firm can use its strengths to reduce its vulnerability to external threats. W-T strategies establish a defensive plan to prevent the firm's weaknesses from making it highly susceptible to external threats.
