Palin headlines Patriot event

Popular conservative will address tea party rally in Van Buren Township Saturday
By Krista Gjestland
Heritage Media

Former vice president candidate and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will be making a stop in Belleville Saturday as a part of Patriots in the Park, hosted by Americans For Prosperity Michigan. George Blichar, Americans For Prosperity Michigan communications associate, said the event is a kind of grassroots outreach program. Patriots in the Park, which will be held at the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Van Buren Township,

will feature several speakers in addition to Palin, including state Sen. Patrick Colbeck, Troy Mayor Janice Daniels and area tea party leaders. Blichar said Palin was reached out to because of her values and notoriety. She is just a very prominent name, and people tend to respond to that, he said. Shes always been a great supporter of limited government and free market and freedom. We really appreciate the types of speeches shes given. Admission is free for the event, but the proceeds

from different activities and refreshments will go to the Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund, a Michigan charity for the families of local veterans. I think this is a topic that is near and dear to her [Palins] heart, said Annie Patnaude, deputy state director for AFP. The fundraiser was most likely a deciding factor, because she believes in the cause. The Patriots in the Park event is meant to start a dialogue about current social, political and economic issues affecting the United States, Blichar said. Denise MagewickSchlotz, a Willow Run Tea Party Caucus member and Former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate co-administrator of the Sarah Palin will attend Saturdays Patriots in the Park event Saturday at the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Van PLEASE SEE PATRIOT/3-A Buren Township.

A common mathematics curriculum for grades K-6 will be in place for the new school year in September, as a result of Van Buren Public Schools Board of Education approval and allocation of $200,000 toward purchase of the Everyday Mathematics series of instructional textbooks and tools. Trustee Scott Russell, who recused himself from the boards vote because he is an employee of VAN BUREN McGraw Hill, the books PUBLIC publisher, SCHOOLS applauded the introduction of a common math curriculum through the sixth grade. Director of Instruction Diane Kullis said that the Everyday Math program is used in almost all school districts in Wayne and Oakland Counties, and is supported by the state of Michigan as part of its Common Core State Standards requirements for all schools. Kullis emphasized that the program acknowledges there may be several ways to solve a math problem, and tolerates different methods, provided the student can show the work leading to the solution. It lets children solve problems many different ways, she said. She encouraged

Hilary Savage gazes at the device in her hand. Its thin and light and full of words, perfect for an avid reader like Savage, adult services librarian at the Belleville Area District Library. As her eyes scan downward, she gently glides an index finger across the objects smooth surface, pulling

back an electric curtain to expose another screen of sentences. Savage is scrolling through a Nook Simple Touch, an electronic book reader that the library has begun introducing to patrons. Although the library has furnished a collection of e-books for a while now, this summer marks the start of lending actual hardware with which patrons can check out the technology that is altering the realm of reading.

Its something weve been wanting to do for a while, Savage said, noting that the librarys circulation of e-books has been trending upward. Seeking to cater to those curious about diving into digital reading, the library purchased four different e-readers the Nook Touch, Nook Color, Kobo Touch and Kindle and is starting to promote a try
