Former Junior National Team runner

captures Olympic event; EMU Professor

wins Sprint triathlon
By Mike Dunn
GAYLORD The start of
the 2012 Mark Mellon
Memorial Triathlon was
delayed about 30 minutes
Saturday morning because of
threatening skies but once
things got under way, the
weather couldnt have been
better.
Slightly overcast skies with
a nice breeze much of the
time provided near perfect
conditions for the tri-athletes
who swam, biked and ran in
either the Olympic Triathlon
with the traditional 1K swim,
40K bike and 10K run or the
Sprint Triathlon featuring a
500-meter swim, 20K bike
and 5K run. Counting those
who participated in the sepa-
rate 5K run, there were more
than 200 participants in all
for the annual return of the
event at Otsego Lake County
Park.
Its a real nice turnout,
especially since we didnt
have as many race-day
signups because of the thun-
der and lightning early this
morning, said Dave Smith,
the co-race director along
with his dad Dan, and also a
top-grade tri-athlete in his
own right. We had over 200,
about the same as last year.
Everything seemed to go
smoothly.
Smith thanked his father
and other family members
along with the many volun-
teers from the St. Mary ath-
letic boosters who provided
food and refreshments and
helped with various duties.
We couldnt put this on
without all the volunteers; we
really appreciate all they do,
Smith said.
Smith, a 2001 St. Mary
graduate now serving as a
health and physical educa-
tion teacher at Mancelona
High School, came into
Saturdays event as the two-
time defending Olympic
Triathlon champion.
He expected to face a stiff
challenge from former Junior
National Team runner Aaron
Bachman, 24, of Grosse Point
and he was right.
Bachman passed Smith
during the final phase of the
event to cross the finish line
in a strong time of 1 hour, 48
minutes, 28.6 seconds. Smith
was runner-up in 1:51:20.4
with Phil Kauppi in third
(2:02:10.5).
With Aaron here, I knew it
would be a challenge, Smith
said. Hes a solid runner so I
knew I had to make up time
on the bike. I was ahead of
him for a while (after the
bike) but he finally outran
me. Hes just a great athlete.
This was Bachmans first
time entering the Mellon
event. He and his wife
Lindsey were in Traverse City
visiting Lindseys parents and
decided to participate.
I never did this one before
but I knew Dave was a good
racer so I was excited to
come here and compete
against him, Bachman said.
My strategy was to build a
lead throughout the race and
then finish strong. But Daves
very good on the bike. Once
he passed me, it was a matter
of staying close enough to
hopefully catch him during
the run.
Bachman, who trains
endurance athletes, said it
felt good to win but that it
took a real effort.
I have to take it more seri-
ously now than when I was
18 or 19, he said. This was
my second race of the season
and I plan to do three or four
more. It feels really, really
good to win today. Im happy
it all went smoothly.
It also went pretty smooth-
ly for Bachmans wife
Lindsey, who was the female
champion in a time of
2:19:09.7. Jill Goshov
(2:22:12.4) was the runner-up
with Jullien Flynn (2:27:05.6)
the third female to finish the
course.
Glenn Goodman
(2:03:37.4) came in fourth
overall behind Bachman,
Smith and Kauppi with Ryan
Hamilton (2:05:53.3) in fifth
followed by Jon Foltz
(2:06:28.1), Lee Kanitz
(2:06:44.3), Stephen Eles
(2:07:31.6), Trevor Darnell
(2:10:21.8) and Scout Hester
(2:13:21.6) to round out the
top 10.
Dave Smiths younger
brother Mike was 11th over-
all in 2:14:56.5 and was the
top finisher in the Male 20-29
age group.
In the Sprint Triathlon, it
was retired school superin-
tendent and current Eastern
Michigan University profes-
sor Derrick Fries, 59, of
Clarkston leading the way in
a time of 1:05:36.9. Robert
Rendon, 27, a member of the
Coast Guard stationed in
Traverse City, was runner-up
in 1:06:03.9 with Joseph
Southgate (1:06:29.5) in
third.
Kallisse Dent, 16, of
Midland was the female
champion in 1:09:07.0, taking
sixth place overall.
This was Fries second time
competing in the Mellon
event. He took third place
last year.
I tried to go hard in the
swim, hammer it on the bike
and then hold off the young
guys on the run, Fries said
with a chuckle. I left from
downstate early this morning
and got here about 5:40 a.m.
so I had time to pre-drive the
bike course and that helped a
lot.
When Fries descended
from the bike, he saw where
Rendon was and knew he
had to stay focused in the
run.
I kept checking back on
the curves to see where
Robert was, he said. I knew
I had a chance if I could pick
up my leg speed.
Fries said it felt great to
win.
Its such a nice event up
here, he said. Its a great
place to have it.
Rendon, an Aviation
Survival Technician (AST) 2,
was a Mellon first-timer,
though he had done similar
triathlon events while sta-
tioned in Oregon.
I was looking for a race
that fit in my schedule and
this one did, he said. Its not
too far (from Traverse City).
Rendon came over with his
wife Katey and their three
children: Noah, 7, and 3-
year-old twins Ryan and
Aubrey.
Rendon said he knew he
wouldnt be first out of the
water, so he had to make up
time on the bike and then
exceed on the run.
He came close but Fries
was able to hold him off.
I did well, Rendon said. I
was satisfied with my time.
Rendon said he enjoyed
Aaron Bachman crosses the finish line Saturday at Otsego Lake County Park as the
Olympic Triathlon champ.
Dave Smith of Mancelona, the co-race director with
his dad Dan, finishes as runner-up on Saturday.

Dent is entering her junior
year at Midland Dow High
School, where she runs cross
country and track. She suc-
cessfully defended the Sprint
title she won the year before.
I went out and did my
best, she said. There was
one girl next to me on the
bike for a while but I got
ahead of her and pretty much
knew I would win if I kept my
pace during the run.
Dent, who also won a
triathlon at South Haven a
few weeks before, said it felt
good to repeat as champion.
My goal was to finish
strong and try for a personal
best, she said.
Melissa Williams

among the ladies and
Christina Smith of Gaylord,
Dave and Mikes younger sis-

Three-time defending champs Triebold and
LaJoie return to put title on line against another
possible record field
By Mike Dunn
GRAYLING Looks like
there will be another strong
field for the annual AuSable
River Canoe Marathon this
year. As of July 7, there were
64 two-person teams entered
to participate in the 2012
marathon, which is billed as
the longest, richest non-stop
canoe race in North America
and the worlds toughest
spectator race. Last year,
there were 90 teams in the
field and 69 crossed the fin-
ish line of the grueling two-
day, 120-mile canoe race that
extends along the Au Sable
from Grayling to Oscoda.
The 2012 race kicks off on
Saturday, July 28, at 9 p.m.
with the traditional LeMans-
style start at the Old AuSable
Canoe Livery. The racing
duos paddle their canoes all
night along the winding con-
tours of the AuSable River
with the top teams finishing
in Oscoda around noon on
Sunday.
This years field includes
four-time defending champs
Andrew Triebold and Steve
Lajoie and many strong chal-
lengers. Triebold, 36, of
Grayling and Lajoie, 36, of
Mirabel, Quebec, won the
2011 race in a time of 14
hours, 41 minutes.
Two of the top Grayling
racers, 30-year-old Josh
Sheldon and 25-year-old
Ryan Halstead, are joining
forces this year and should
present a formidable chal-
lenge to the winning streak of
Triebold and Lajoie. Last
year, Ryan Halstead and his
brother Rodney came in sec-
ond place in 14:48:32 with
Sheldon and Steve Kolonich
taking third in 15:01:22.
One of the top East Coast
duos from last year, fifth-
place finishers Mike
Schlimmer, 25, and Ben
Schlimmer, 23, of Cortland,
New York, are back for their
fifth marathon race.
Two strong Indiana racers,
48-year-old Matt Strieb of
Bristol and Matt Meersman,
35, of South Bend, are team-
ing this year, as are veteran
racers Steve Corlew, 31, of
Grayling and Bill Torongo, 50,
of Roscommon. This will be
Torongos 28th marathon
race.
Other strong contenders
from the field of competitors
entered thus far are the duo
of Jason Hatfield, 34, of
Grayling and Colin Hunter,
31, of Grayling; Nick Walton,
39, of Eaton Rapids and Matt
Rudnitsky, 25, of East
Rochester, N.Y.; and Ted
Smutek, 44, of Luzerne and
Pete Mead, 31, of Traverse
City.
The 2012 field includes
Iron Man Al Widing Sr. once
again. The legendary Widing,
who is 87 years young and
hails from Mio, missed the
2010 race but was back last
year and completed the race
with longtime partner Rick
Joy of Silverwood, finishing a
respectable 31st overall.
Widing will be teaming with
21-year-old Hailey McMahon
of Grayling this time around.
This will be Mr. Widings 40th
marathon race and the first
for young Hailey.
Another local team that is
entered is the father-son duo
of Joel Mack, 38, and Zack
Mack, 16, of Grayling, for the
second year in a row. Zack is
a star athlete at Mio and a
state qualifier in wrestling.
The Dean boys of Grayling
are back also for their second
race. Cerebral Spencer Dean,
20, and younger brother wild
Wes, 17, will seek to improve
on their 55th-place finish as
rookies in 2011.
The field features teams
from as far away as England
and numerous teams from
various parts of Canada as
well as Massachusetts, New
Hampshire, New York and
Florida in addition to Iowa,
Minnesota, Illinois and
Indiana.
As of July 1, there were 13
mixed teams (man and
woman), and eight senior
teams (both 50 years and
older). Additionally, there
were nine masters teams
(both 40 years and older),
one womens team, and
seven rookie teams (both
first-time paddlers).
Race organizers have again
added an extra day of time
trials, extending from
Wednesday through Friday,
July 25-27, at Penrods Canoe
Livery. The time trials are
used to determine starting
positions, an important fac-
tor for those who would legit-
imately challenge for the
2012 title.
The second annual Dash
for Cash is set for Tuesday,
July 24, in Oscoda. Up to 64
teams will be competing for a
$5,000 prize pool on that day
in a bracket style, single-
elimination event.

and merchandise are ready
for this years event and avail-
able in a downtown store-

FIFE LAKE -- The three-
r a c e s - i n - e i g h t - d a y s
marathon at Cherry Raceway
in Fife Lake, which was part
of the Best Fourth In The
North 2012 Festival present-
ed by the Fife Lake Chamber
of Commerce, concluded on
Friday, July 6 with 2012 Mid-
Season Championships for
all six weekly classes on a
very hot and sweltering
evening.
The high-powered UMP
Super Late Models returned
after a mini vacation and
despite the heat, the overflow
crowd was brimming with
excitement and were treated
to an action-packed night of
racing.
The first main event of the
evening was for the Four-
Cylinders Compacts and they
were led to the green flag by
the top two in the season
long points chase, a pair of
13-year-olds: defending
track champion Autumn
Beeman and current points
leader Chris Casey and it was
Beeman who was able to
jump out to the advantage.
Casey kept pace through-
out the majority of the event
but Beeman would stay out
in front the entire race.
Beemans No. 016 Beemans
Towing / Ford never looked
back as she was able to pick
up her third feature win of
the season as Casey finished
second over Tuesday nights
feature winner, 16-year-old
Cara Neverth of McBain. A
pair of 15-year-olds. Ryan
Andras and Dylan Roush,
rounded out the top five.
Beeman also won the heat
race.
Up next it was the UMP
Modifieds for their 20-lap
feature and it would be cur-
rent points leader John
McCaul and defending track
champion Joe Rokos leading
the field to the green flag.
McCaul took the early race
lead while Rokos, who was
driving the No. 03 car nor-
mally driven by Tony Gokey
after Rokos machine broke
during the heat race. With
only one caution during the
race, McCaul was able to
keep some distance between
himself and the rest of the
pack the entire distance.
In the end, McCauls No. 27
Stuberg Construction /
Xtreme Racecars machine
would visit victory lane one
more time and for the
Montague veteran, it was his
fifth feature win of the sea-
son. Dennis Taghon would
finish in the runner-up spot
followed by Rokos as Paul
Johnson and Colin Thirlby
completed the final top five.
Thirlby won the heat race.
The Four-Cylinder
Warriors made their appear-
ance with a front row consist-
ing of current overall and
rookie points leader Jim
Durga and 15-year-old Nick
Olds bringing the field down
to chief starter Tim Beebes
green flag. Durga had the
early race advantage until lap
three when Olds took over
the race lead, never relin-
quishing it the rest of the
way.
The teen from Empire in
his No. 2 Taghons Garage /
Chevrolet would get his sec-
ond feature win of the season
with 16-year-old John
Edingfield finishing second
over Russ Carrier while 75-
year-old Ron Doberstein Sr.
and 18-year-old Greg
Walkowiak would make up
the top five. Rookie Andrew
Austin was the lone heat race
winner.
The Street Stocks rolled out
for the feature next. Their
front row was made up of
current overall and rookie
points leader Allen Oyer, 19,
and Bob Green, who were the
first to see the green flag for
their 15-lap feature. Green
managed to take the advan-
tage right off the bat. Despite
withstanding a big challenge
from Tim Tabaczka, the Fife
Lake native would take his
No. 23 Olsons Auto Body /
Chevrolet to victory lane for
the fifth time this season.
Tabaczka finished in the
runner-up spot while 17-
year-old rookie James Clem
was third as Oyer and 16-
year-old Andy Nickerson III
made up the top five finish-
ing spots. The heat race wins
were collected by Oyer and
Tabaczka.
Next it was the Cruiser
Bombers 15-lap feature
which was lead out by cur-
rent points leader Jimmy
Hiller, 14, and 2010 track
champion Roger McQueen of
Mancelona. Hiller was the
early race leader early until
lap five when McQueen took
over the race lead. Despite
several cautions in the race
which slowed the pace down,
McQueen was up to the chal-
lenge throughout the race
and in the end, the
Mancelona native would take
his No. 53 Richards Rusty
Wrench / Chevrolet to victory
lane for his first win of the
year.
Kevin Stricker would finish
in the runner-up spot while
Jeremiah Woebbeking was
third ahead of Hiller, who
slipped to fourth while
Richard Cebula Jr. completed
the top five. Hiller and
McQueen would collect the
heat race triumphs.
Finally it was the 20-lap
feature for the premier divi-
sion at Cherry Raceway, the
UMP Super Late Models.
Their main event was led out
by the top two drivers in the
points in their division, cur-
rent points leader Brandon
Thirlby and Greg Gokey.
Thirlby would take the early
race lead while the rest of the
field jockeyed for position
behind him. Only one cau-
tion flag flew the entire dis-
tance as Thirlby would go on
to lead the entire distance.
For the Traverse City native
in his No. m14 Thirlby
Automotive / Mastersbilt
Racecars machine, it was his
fourth feature win in four
main events held at Cherry
this season. Gokey would
come across the line in sec-
ond while former seven-time
track champion Eric
Spangler of Lake City was
third. Defending track cham-
pion Ben Hidy was fourth
ahead of Steve Nieuwenhuis,
who wrapped up the top five.
Spangler and rookie Brook
Brasington were the heat
race victors.
This Friday, July 13, will be
another great night of racing
up in the Great White North
as a full six-in-one show will
once again be highlighted by
the high-powered UMP
Super Late Models. Also in
action will be the UMP
Modifieds, Street Stocks,
Cruiser Bombers, Four-
Cylinder Warriors, and Four-
Cylinder Compacts.

GRAYLING -- Michigan's
"lone" wolverine is touring the
state this summer in a travel-
ing exhibit created by the
Michigan Historical Center.
The wolverine will be at
Hartwick Pines State Park near
Grayling from July 26 to August
15.
Discovered in the thumb
area in 2004, the wolverine
roamed the Minden City State
Game Area until its natural
death in 2010. Originally dis-
played for nearly a year at the
Saginaw Bay Visitor Center at
the Bay City Recreation Area,
the wolverine then went to the
Michigan Historical Center
where a secure case and exhib-
it panels were created.
This summer, the exhibit is
traveling throughout the state
before settling back in at the
Bay City Recreation Area for
the winter. The exhibit features
taxidermy of the wolverine
and information about its time
in Michigan, as well as a look at
the wolverine in science and in
Michigan history. An animal
rarely seen in the wild, the
wolverine has drawn large,
curious crowds at each stop
along the tour.

THURSDAY: Hebrews 10:19-24 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 19 Therefore, brethren, since
we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way
which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and since we have a great
priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of
faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with
pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who
promised is faithful; 24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good
deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging
one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
FRIDAY: Acts 2:41-42 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 41 So then, those who had received his
word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. 42 They
were continually devoting themselves to the apostles teaching and to fellowship, to the
breaking of bread and to prayer.
SATURDAY: Acts 1:14 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 14 These all with one mind were con-
tinually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus,
and with His brothers.
SUNDAY: Acts 20:7 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 7 On the first day of the week, when we
were gathered together to break bread, Paul began talking to them, intending to leave the
next day, and he prolonged his message until midnight.
MONDAY: James 5:13-15 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 13 Is anyone among you suffering?
Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises. 14 Is anyone among you sick?
Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him
with oil in the name of the Lord; 15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is
sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.
TUESDAY: 1 Corinthians 14:12 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 12 So also you, since you are
zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church.
WEDNESDAY: 1 Corinthians 14:26 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 26 What is the outcome
then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation,
has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification

Ken Bannister

I cant verify the statistic, but when I was prayerfully considering moving from
Pennsylvania to northern Michigan to become the Lead Pastor at the Gaylord
Evangelical Free Church, someone told me that there were over 19,000 people in
Otsego County that did not attend any church. That is quite a large number when you
consider that the U.S. Census has the 2011 population for Otsego county at just over
24,000 people.
The big question is, Why? Why dont more people attend church? Maybe it is
because they think that church is boring! Maybe it is because they think that all the
church wants is their money! Maybe it is because they think that there are too many
hypocrites in the church! Maybe they just dont think the church and the Bible
applies to their life today.
But if you turn the question around you find an interesting fact. Do you know the
#1 reason why people who decide to give church a try, do so? The answer is that most
people who visit a church do so because someone personally invited them. If the flip-
side of this is true then this means that quite possibly the main reason that people
dont go to church is simple its because they have never been personally invited.
Never underestimate the power of an invitation. In John 4, after the Samaritan
woman at the well had an encounter with Jesus, she ran back to her village with two
powerful words, Come see, which resulted in many from her village coming to meet
Jesus (John 4:29-30).
So if you do go to church, let me encourage you to invite someone to attend with you
this weekend. Dont assume that they would not be interested. Dont say their no
for them. Invite them and let them say their yes or no for themselves. And if
you are reading this and dont go to church, please consider this article your person-
al invitation to attend one of the many great churches in northern Michigan this week-
end.

Key
Areas
to
Pay
Attention to
When Buying
a Home
Compliments of Ed Wohlfiel
You may save money in the
long run
Looking for a new home can be
exciting and frustrating. You can
help alleviate the frustration by
paying close attention to five key
areas of the homes you're con-
sidering buying; it may save you
money in the long run.
Don Walker is an inspector and
owner of Ace Home Inspections.
He says there are five areas in
homes that he frequently reports
problems with. They are electri-
cal, foundation, plumbing, the
attic, and landscaping.
Tip # 5 - Landscaping
"There should not be moisture
or plants next to your house,"
says Walker. He says there should
be a 12 inch barrier between the
landscape and the house. Walker
says otherwise you run the risk of
having the foundation crack and
affect the home. What happens
is, as the landscape that is too
close to the home is watered, the
foundation and soil expand.
Then, when no watering occurs,
the foundation dries up and
shrinks and this can cause it to
crack.
Remember, knowledge is
power, so learning about the
home before you close the deal
on it will keep you from making a
mistake that may cost you extra
out-of-pocket money later.
