PRESENTING PARTNER - TD
As our flagship Partner, TD Bank has been an incredible support to Vancouver Pride for several years now. TD was one of the first of our Partners to participate in the Pride @ Work Stories Project. We learned a lot from that video about how TD really walks the talk. The TD employee featured in the story told us about what a life-changing experience it has been to work in TDs environment. The TD Bank workplace is as embracing of who she is as it is professionally supportive. Coming from Mexico, where blackmail and threats are still commonplace against members of the LGBTTQ community, she felt that she lived three lives. One life dedicated to her work, one for her family, and one for her friends. None of them felt safe. Even as a star player on the Mexican womens soccer team, she was not immune. Her positive experiences at TD are part of the banks active career tracking based on human rights and dignity for all employees and customers. Here at Vancouver Pride we see this reflected in all of our relationships with TD employees. We also can point with pride to the Canada wide sponsoring of Pride Parades and the many school and community based anti-bullying initiatives supported by TD Bank.
MAYORS WELCOME
On behalf of the City of Vancouver, I would like to wish everyone a happy 2012 Vancouver Pride. I would also like to thank the Vancouver Pride Society, its sponsors and the volunteers for creating such a fabulous celebration of culture, freedom and community spirit in Vancouver. The spirit of the Vancouver Pride Parade and Festival is electrifying as the community comes together to celebrate and show their pride. Were proud that Vancouver is a city where diversity is welcomed and valued as a fundamental strength. Were proud that members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two-Spirited and Queer community can celebrate openly and that well over 650,000 citizens come out to show their support. The Pride Parade and Festival in Vancouver is among the very largest in the world. It is a proud symbol of the remarkable progress that has been made, and an important rallying call for ongoing activism to secure acceptance, safety, and equal rights for all citizens. To celebrate our diversity in such an extraordinary way adds even more to Vancouvers uniquely vibrant character. Pride makes us so much stronger as a community and as a city. My thanks to everyone involved for creating such an exceptionally welcoming and festive atmosphere. On behalf of the City of Vancouver, Vancouver Park Board, Vancouver Public Library, Vancouver Police Department, and Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, Happy Pride! Mayor Gregor Robertson
While life in Canada for the LGBTTQ community has become more mainstream in urban centres, others around the world continue to fight for human rights. In many countries, an individuals sexual orientation or gender identity can lead to discrimination, violence, imprisonment or death. Vancouver Pride is a member of the international Lesbian and Gay Associates (ILGA), and we are dedicated to the fight for equality and liberation from all forms of discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two spirited and queer people everywhere. Vancouver Pride is happy to present 34 years of the mission of painting the world pink and
encourage community support for all sexual diversities. Prides across the country and the world have become a gathering of people form all walks of life. Our diversity is celebrated openly, and people express themselves freely. At Pride, we celebrate on behalf of those who continue to fight for liberation around the world. We dance for those who are forbidden to dance with Pride, we sing for those who are silenced and oppressed. We celebrate with you and for you at Vancouver Pride. At all Pride events, we showcase a map representing LGBTTQ rights around the world and display our archival posters, which show how our community has moved from the margins to the mainstream where we are today.
Although we have rights here we still need to support others. There are almost 80 countries with laws that imprison LGBTTQ people and 7 countries that enforce death penalties for those who identify under the Rainbow. These discriminatory countries greatly outnumber countries that have passed laws in support of the LGBTTQ community. Anti-discriminatory laws exist today in 50 countries. Same-sex unions are recognized in over 20 countries. There are 11 countries and 2 First Nations where same-sex marriage is legal, including Canada. In a handful of countries some local jurisdictions perform or recognize civil unions and marriage.

Each year the Vancouver Pride Parade gets more spectacular and more crowded. Last year over 650,000 people lined the streets for Western Canadas largest celebration of the LGBTTQ community. As Vancouver Pride celebrates its 34th year, expect more fabulous floats, more elaborate costumes and an even greater number of people filling the streets of Vancouver with Pride! The Pride Parade will begin at noon on Sunday, August 5th, at Robson and Thurlow. The floats head West down the hill to Denman Street, follow along Denman to Pacific and then finishes at the Sunset Beach Pride Day Festival and Beer Garden, which runs from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm. For the best view of the Parade, stake out a spot along the route early and be sure to spread out! The most congested areas of the Parade route are at the start of the parade, the intersections of Denman and Robson as well Denman and Davie. There is more space available further along Beach Avenue if you dont want the intense crowds. The day will be hot, hot, hot (in more ways than one) so protect yourself with a slip-slap of sunscreen and wear a hat to hide from the sun. Of course, bring a water bottle filled with cold water and hydrate often. The parade will take about 3 hours from set up to completion, so be prepared to stay a while. Bring up a chair, a blanket or something to sit on, and be prepared to get soaked by fire hoses or water guns! Remember to fill your pockets with bills and change to donate to the Vancouver Pride Toonies Brigade during the parade. Your donations ensure Pride is even better next year!

JENNA TALACKOVA
Jenna Talackova is Miss Universe Canadas first t ra n s g e n d e re d contestant. She recently became a household name after she successfully waged a legal battle to be allowed to compete in the Miss Universe Canada after she was initially disqualified for not being a naturally born female. Jenna, a local Vancouverite, refused to be discriminated against and fought alongside top feminist lawyer, Gloria Allred, to be treated fairly and equally. Jenna says she knew she was female by the time she was 4, began hormone therapy at 14 and had sex-reassignment surgery at 19. Jenna made top 12 in the pageant and was crowned Miss Congeniality. Among Jennas interests are holistic nutrition, cooking, shopping, dancing and exercise.

DAVID HOLTZMAN
BILL MONROE
Bill Monroe moved to Vancouver in 1981 after living in Winnipeg where he helped start the gay club scene. He first started with performing and fundraising for Team Vancouver in 1982 to help the local queer sports team get to the first Gay Games in San Francisco. His portrayal of Her Majesty with the Vancouver Mens Chorus was so amazing, they had to create an honor worthy of his work, becoming the first life-time member. Bill has fundraised for
David Holtzman, known by Vancouverites as a community leader, a gay activist, and a social crusader, died unexpectedly of a heart attack while on vacation in Palm Springs with his loving partner of nine years, Peter Regier.
Since he was a young man David worked in the not-for-profit sector and his contributions can be felt throughout Vancouver, Canada, and indeed, around the world to this day. Well known in the queer community, David was instrumental to the success of A Loving Spoonful, an organisation dedicated to feeding those living with AIDS and other debilitating diseases; he was involved in the early years of Friends for Live, a non-profit providing wellness and care to people living with serious illnesses such as AIDS and cancer; and most recently he lent his talents to Vancouvers Queer Film Festival. But, as a social connector, Davids reach extended well beyond the queer community with his work in Indonesia with WUSC (World University Service of Canada) and in Tokyo, Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver with
