Participation for Sustainable Development in Joint Forest Management

Joint Forest Management (JFM) is a perception for developing partnerships between forest user groups and the Forest Department) on the basis of mutual trust and jointly defined roles and responsibilities with regard to forest protection and development. In JFM, local communities and Government manage the resource and share the cost equally; however it is difficult to generalize the JFM concept and approach in the light of variations across the nation with respect to geography, resource base, socio-economic status, cultural diversity and pressures on forests. Planning and management is essential requirement for development. When we talk in context of environment sustainability and conservation a need for participation and collaboration in planning arises. It all starts with problem and then need as there is serious dilemma particularly how to reconcile the extensive land and financial resources required by protected areas with the acute social and economic development needs of poor rural people with very limited access to any kind of resources because of which experts are hired that go for lengthy process of management which people. How, the lack of participation in JFM activities adversely affects the income generation of the people and which leads to failure of JFM projects in several states. Social acceptability is major criteria for the success of any community project and social acceptability depends upon needs and income generated by the project activities. When it was evaluated with combination of secondary and primary research. It has been found normative but conclusive in nature. The complex nature of analysis required a comprehensive secondary research followed by a multi stage primary research. In several states it is observed that income generation and basic needs are basic yardstick to participate in the JFM. Lack of monitory benefits forced the community to less participate in the most of states in India. The assets creation plays as catalyst in income generation and participation in over all.
