FAS/V3200 OVERVIEW
The FAS/V3200 is the newest member of the industry-leading NetApp midrange storage controller product line. The FAS/V3200 continues the tradition of price/performance leadership in the midrange family while introducing new features and capabilities needed by enterprises making long-term storage investments with todays budget. Key FAS/V3200 innovations include a new I/O expansion module (IOXM) that provides configuration flexibility for enabling HA configurations in either 3U or 6U footprints, with the 6U configuration offering 50% more slot density than previous FAS/V3100 systems. In addition to better performance and slot density, the FAS/V3200 also offers reliability, availability, serviceability, and manageability (RASM) with the integrated service processor (SP), the next generation of remote management in the NetApp storage family.
1.1
The FAS/V3200 series is a new NetApp midrange platform family offering with improved price/performance, higher spindle limits and capacities, and RASM improvements using the integrated service processor. The FAS/V3200 also introduces an optional IOXM that provides configuration flexibility resulting in 3U and 6U footprint HA solutions. Both solutions offer better midrange performance and, when using the IOXM in the 6U solution, a 50% increased slot density.
1.2
15% increase in maximum spindles and capacity Integrated SP, next-generation RLM and BMC, which increases FAS/V3200 RASM Initially shipped in November 2010 with Data ONTAP 8.0.1 RC2 December 2010 = Data ONTAP 7.3.5 installed by default in manufacturing February 2011 = Quote Tool allows selection of either Data ONTAP 7.3.5 or Data ONTAP 8.0.1 when ordering FAS3200

2.1
The FAS/V3200 components are the controller module, the I/O expansion module (IOXM), and the chassis.
2.2
The FAS/V3200 controller and IOXM are 1.5U high each, and the chassis is 3U.
2.3
HOW ARE THE CONTROLLER AND IOXM USED WITH THE FAS/V3200 CHASSIS?
Depending on the FAS/V3200 model, a chassis can be built using a single controller, two controllers, or a controller and an IOXM. More details about standalone and HA configurations are covered in the next section.
2.4
The FAS/V comes in three models: the FAS/V3210, the FAS/V3240, and FAS/V3270 (which represent the low, mid, and high-end controllers, respectively).
2.5
WHAT MODEL STRING EXTENSIONS ARE USED TO DENOTE HA AND THE PRESENCE OF IOXM?
FAS/V3200 single-chassis HA configurations will include an A to denote an active-active pair. FAS/V3200 single chassis with an IOXM present will include an E to denote expanded I/O. FAS/V3200 dual-chassis configurations with a controller and IOXM present end with an AE.
2.6
The FAS/V3200 controller is hot-swappable and, it is important to note, does not require your turning off either power supply (PSU). The IOXM is not hot-swappable and will cause Data ONTAP to panic if removed. An IOXM hot-plugged into a running controller will not be recognized until a reboot takes place.

FAS/V3210, FAS/V3240E, and FAS/V3270E are known as single-chassis standalone configurations. FAS/V3210A, FAS/V3240A, and FAS/V3270A are known as single-chassis HA configurations. FAS/V3240AE and FAS3270AE are known as dual-chassis HA configurations.
3.3
Single-chassis standalone configurations are 3U each. Single-chassis HA configurations are 3U each. Dual-chassis HA configurations are 6U each.
3.4
FAS/V3210 standalone controller can have a second controller added to become FAS/V3210A. FAS/V3240E and FAS/V3270E single-chassis standalone controller can have a second chassis with a controller and IOXM to become FAS/V3240AE and FAS/V3270AE. FAS/V3240A and FAS/V3270A single-chassis standalone controller can have a second chassis and IOXM added to convert to FAS/V3240AE and FAS/V3270AE (September 2011 quote tool update and conversion procedure posted on NOW site).
3.5
Yes. Hardware-assisted takeover on the FAS/V3200 uses the new SP, and the hardware-assisted takeover functionality is similar to using the RLM in FAS3000, FAS3100, and FAS6000 controller families. There is more information about the SP in questions 4.9 through 4.13.
3.6
The FAS/V3200 series supports HA failover in single-chassis and dual-chassis configurations. In a single-chassis HA configuration the HA interconnect runs over the backplane and no external connection is needed. In dual-controller HA configurations the HA interconnect uses the on-board c0a and c0b ports and requires external connections.
3.7
While the chassis backplane is not fault tolerant, there are no active components on the backplane that controllers rely on to remain in a running state. This passive backplane is a highly reliable component that is very unlikely to cause an outage on a FAS/V3200 series. Reliable passive backplanes are used in almost all modular storage systems with two controllers in a single chassis as well as network switches. Also, NetApp has been shipping systems and subsystems with shared backplanes for quite some time (DS14-class disk shelves, the FAS200 series, FAS2000, and FAS3100 series) that have demonstrated very high reliability of the chassis backplane.
3.8
Yes, MetroCluster is available on the FAS/V3200 series in several configuration options. MetroCluster can be used with all of the configurations covered in Table 1. Note that fabric MetroCluster requires use of DS14mk4 back-end storage.
3.9
Yes, V-Series configurations are available with all three models. There are two V-Series requirements for the FAS/V3200. An X2054A adapter is required for the V3270/V3240 array attach; on-board FC ports are not supported. The V3210 is limited to one LUN group from a single array and can use the on-board FC ports.

4.3
The FAS/V3200 requires Data ONTAP 7.3.5 or Data ONTAP 8.0.1. The FAS/V3200 initially shipped with Data ONTAP 8.0.1 and, starting in December 2010, Data ONTAP 7.3.5 was installed by default in manufacturing. Starting in February 2011, either Data ONTAP 7.3.5 or Data ONTAP 8.0.1 can be selected when ordering FAS3200 systems.
4.4
The FAS/V3200 uses the x86_64 build. This same build supports both AMD and the latest platforms based on Intel .
4.5
ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS WITH RUNNING DATA ONTAP 7.3.5 ON FAS/V3200?
4.6
HOW ARE NVLOG CONTENTS PROTECTED ON THE FAS/V3200 UPON DIRTY SHUTDOWN?
As with the FAS2000 series, FAS/V3200 uses battery-backed-up system memory called NVMEM, and it provides similar functionality to NVRAM on other FAS platforms. Unlike NVRAM, which uses separate battery-backed-up memory, NVMEM uses space carved out of battery-backed-up main system memory to provide NVMEM functionality.
4.7
HOW LONG WILL NVMEM BATTERY BACKUP LAST, AND HOW LONG TO RECHARGE A COMPLETELY DISCHARGED NVMEM BATTERY?
The NVMEM battery will last up to 72 hours, and it takes 15 hours to charge a completely discharged NVMEM battery.
4.8
No, the FAS/V3200 does not have an LCD display. However, LEDs are provided on the chassis front to help determine the state of the controller. Remote management has proven to be the primary source for monitoring system information versus LCDs. Also, with the SP the state of LEDs can be determined remotely.
4.9
The FAS/V3200 uses the new SP, the next-generation RLM and BMC remote management module, for remote management functionality. The SP has all the features of RLM and BMC along with new ones that improve RASM capabilities. The new features are covered in question 4.10. The FAS/V6200 also leverages the new SP.
4.10 WHAT ARE SOME OF THE NEW SERVICE PROCESSOR MANAGEMENT FEATURES?
The SP performs FRU reporting and tracking, monitors and reports on internal sensors, reports on and can set LED states, and actively manages FAN speed. Besides the Ethernet management port interface (the external management port is shared by SP and e0M), the SP can also be accessed from the serial console by toggling with CTRL-G. Use CTRL-D to get back to the serial console.
4.11 IS THE SP CONNECTED TO BOTH THE ETHERNET AND THE SERIAL CONSOLE?
The SP is always connected to the Ethernet and serial console and can be accessed from either. If the SP is accessed over Ethernet, you can toggle to the serial console with CTRL-D. If logged into the serial console, you can toggle into the SP using CTRL-G. To get back to the serial console, toggle with CTRL-D.

FAS/V3200 I/O
WHAT KIND OF EXPANSION SLOTS DOES THE FAS/V3200 HAVE?
Each FAS/V3200 controller has two on-board PCIe v2.0 (Gen2) x8 slots. The top slot is full height, full length, and the bottom slot is full height, length. Each FAS/V3200 IOXM has four PCIe v1.0 (Gen 1) x8 slots that are full height and full length.
5.2
ARE THERE ANY BEST PRACTICES FOR USING THE CONTROLLER AND IOXM SLOTS?
Since controller slots 1 and 2 are PCIe v2.0 (Gen 2) slots, high-performance cards such as the 10GbE and 8Gb FC target cards should be used in them. Storage adapters and even Flash Cache cards are better suited for the IOXM slots when two high-performance adapters are present. Build rules in manufacturing will install adapters in the FAS/V3200 according to this best practice, and the NetApp Support (NOW ) site Sysconfig Guide shows adapter and slot priorities for FAS/V3200 based on this best practice.
5.3
WHAT ON-BOARD I/O PORTS DOES THE FAS/V3200 HAVE FOR DATA ACCESS?

5.4
Yes. As with other on-board FC ports, the ones on FAS/V3200 can also be set to target or initiator mode. 5.5 DO THE FAS3200 ON-BOARD FC PORTS SHIP WITH SFP INSTALLED?
5.6
CAN THE X2054A OR X2054B FC HBAS BE MIGRATED TO THE FAS3200 AS PART OF A HEAD SWAP UPGRADE?
The X2054A can be used in the FAS3200, but the X2054B isnt supported on the FAS3200 and cannot be migrated during the head swap upgrade.
5.7
ARE THERE POTENTIAL ISSUES MIGRATING A X2054A ADAPTER TO A FAS3200 AS PART OF A HEAD SWAP UPGRADE?
Generally no, but for purely large sequential write workloads the X2054A has a slight performance penalty on the FAS3200 compared to the X2065A SAS HBA. However, workloads with even small amounts of reads versus large sequential writes result in no performance difference between the X2054A FC HBA and the X2065A SAS HBA in FAS3200 models. Based on performance testing FAS3200 models with large sequential writes the resulting throughput was similar to those with corresponding FAS3100 models. If a X2054A is migrated from a FAS3100 to a FAS3200 as part of a head swap upgrade with a purely large sequential write workload, resulting performance on the FAS3200 might be equal to or slightly lower than previous results on the FAS3100.

5.9
The private management provides out-of-band management to the SAS DS2246 and DS4243 shelves. For more information on the ACP port, review the Storage Subsystem Technical FAQ.
5.13 WHEN USED EXTERNALLY HOW ARE THE HA INTERCONNECTION PORTS CONNECTED?
When using the FAS3240AE or FAS3270AE configurations ports, connect c0a ports together on both controllers and c0b ports together on both controllers.
5.14 WHAT HAPPENS IF A CUSTOMER WANTS TO USE THE SAME TCP/IP ADDRESSES AND SUBNET AS THE HA PORTS ARE USING?
The on-board HA ports have their own private IP space along with their own routing table. Given this, other Ethernet ports on the FAS/V3200 can use the same subnet and addresses as the HA ports without any issues.
5.15 CAN OPTICAL AND COPPER CABLES BE USED WITH THE HA INTERCONNECT PORTS?
Yes. If using optical cables, the SFP+ model X6589-R6 is required. If using copper cables, the SFP+ isnt needed because the cable has the needed SFP+ attached.
Fiber optics: Multimode SFP+ transceiver (X6589-R6 / 332-00279R6) X6553-R6 (112-00188) R6, CBL, 2M, 50u, 2000MHz/Km/MM, OP, LC/LC X6536-R6 (112-00090) R6, CBL, 5M, 50u, 2000MHz/Km/MM, OP, LC/LC X6554-R6 (112-00189) R6, CBL, 15M, 50u, 2000MHz/Km/MM, OP, LC/LC X6537-R6 (112-00091) R6, CBL, 30M, 50u, 2000MHz/Km/MM, OP, LC/LC

6.4
Any disk supported in the above shelves in Data ONTAP 7.3.5 and Data ONTAP 8.0.1 is supported on the FAS/V3200 series.
6.5
SSDs supported in the above shelves can be used on the FAS/V3240 and FAS/V3270. The FAS/V3210 does not support SSDs.
6.6
CAN DS2246 AND DS4243 BE USED TOGETHER ON A FAS/V3200 WITHOUT THE IOXM?
The DS2246 and DS4342 cannot be on the same storage stack together. Since the FAS3200 only has two on-board SAS ports, to use these two shelves together requires adding a SAS HBA to be installed into one of the two controller slots.
6.7
WHY IS A X2054A FC HBA INCLUDED WITH ALL V3240 AND V3270 ORDERS?
V-Series requires that a X2054A be used as part of the solution, so the Quote Tool automatically adds one to the order.

No, the two power supplies are assigned to the FAS/V3200 chassis, not to a specific controller or IOXM within the chassis.
7.5
7.6
No, the three fans provide cooling for both chassis bays.
7.7
The SP on each controller attempts to set the fan speed based on temperatures on the controller. In the case of a single-chassis HA solution, the fans contain logic so the higher of the two controller SP fan speed requests is used.
7.8
WHAT TYPE OF FAN AND POWER SUPPLY FAILURES CAN FAS/V3200 WITHSTAND?
The FAS/V3200 can run indefinitely with a failed fan or power supply. It should be noted that each fan FRU contains two fans, and a failed fan FRU counts as two failed fans and would initiate a shutdown.
7.9
HOW LONG WILL A FAS/V3200 RUN IF A POWER SUPPLY OR FAN FRU IS REMOVED?
The FAS/V3200 will initiate a shutdown if a fan FRU is removed for more than two minutes. The FAS/V3200 will run indefinitely if a power supply is removed.
7.10 WHICH RAIL KIT DOES THE FAS3200 USE FOR MOUNTING IN THIRD-PARTY CABINETS?
The FAS6200 uses the X5155 rail kit for mounting in third-party cabinets.
