Planning Aspects in Moderate Climate In regions with a moderate climate, prevalent temperatures are neither too high nor too low. Techniques such as

shading, cross ventilation, orientation, reflective glazing, etc. need to be incorporated into buildings so as to maximize their energy efficiency. The thermal resistance and heat capacity of walls and roofs need not be very high as the prevalent temperatures are generally within human comfort levels.

The main objectives while designing buildings in this zone should be: Resisting heat gain: To resist heat gain the measures that can be adopted are: vThe exposed surface area of the building is reduced. vUsing materials that absorb heat slowly. vAdequately shading the building. Promoting heat loss: Heat loss can be promoted through vProper ventilation of appliances used. vIncreasing the rate of ventilation in the building. For this region, the general recommendations are: Open spaces and built form:

Grass absorbs heat and minimises reradiation

vAn open and free layout of the buildings is preferred. vLarge open spaces in the form of lawns can be provided to reduce reflected radiation. vOpen spaces such as courtyards and atria promote ventilation. vThey can be provided with ponds and fountains for evaporative cooling. vCourtyards act as heat sinks during the day and radiate the heat back at night. vGrass can be used as ground cover to absorb solar radiation and aid evaporative cooling. vEarth beaming can help lower the temperature and also deflect hot summer winds.

LILADHAR PARAB ARCHITECTS & DESIGNERS P. LTD.

Orientation and Plan Form: v v An east-west orientation is preferred in this climatic region. Cross-ventilation must be ensured at night as ambient temperatures during this period are low.

South and north facing walls are easier to shade than east and west walls. During summer, the south wall with significant exposure to solar radiation in most parts of India, leads to very high temperatures in south-west rooms. Hence, shading of the south wall is imperative. The surface to volume (S/V) ratio should be kept as minimum as possible to reduce heat gains.

v v

Cross-ventilation must be ensured at night as ambient temperatures during this

period are low.

Living areas may be located on the eastern side to allow for heat penetration in the mornings, and an open porch on the south east side allows heat gain in the winters while providing for shade in the summers. The western side should ideally be well-shaded. Roof: Flat roofs or vaulted roofs are ideal in this climate. Nonetheless, a vaulted roof provides a larger

v v

surface area for heat loss compared to a flat roof.

v v v v v

The material of the roof should be massive; a reinforced cement concrete (RCC) slab is preferred to asbestos cement (AC) sheet roof. A false ceiling in rooms having exposed roofs is favorable as the space between the two acts as a heat buffer. Thermal insulation over false ceiling further increases the buffer action. Insulation of roofs makes the buildings more energy efficient than insulating the walls. Evaporative cooling of the roof surface and night time radioactive cooling can also be employed. In case of evaporative cooling, it is better to use a roof having high thermal transmittance.

Walls: In multi-storied buildings, walls and glazing account for most of the heat gain. The control of heat gain through the walls by shading, thus, becomes an important design consideration. A wall that transmits less heat is hence feasible. Fenestration: The arrangement of windows is important for reducing heat gain. Windows can be larger in the north, while those on the east, west and south should be smaller. All the windows should be shaded with chajjas of appropriate lengths. Glazing of low transmissivity should be used. Moveable shading devices such as curtains and venetian blinds can also be used. Ventilators are preferred at higher levels as they help in throwing out the hot air. Since daytime temperatures are high during summer, the windows should be kept closed to keep the hot air out and opened during night-time to admit cooler air. The use of 'jaalis'(lattice work) made of wood, stone or RCC may be considered as it they allow ventilation while blocking solar radiation. Scheduling air changes (i.e. high ventilation rate at night and during cooler periods of the day, and lower ones during daytime) can significantly help in reducing the discomfort. The heat gain through windows can be reduced by using glass with low transmissivity. Color and Texture:

v v v v v v v

Properly Design Chajjas and Fins Help To Keep The Interior Cool

v v v v v

Change of color is a cheap and effective technique for lowering indoor temperatures. Colors that absorb less heat should be used to paint the external surface. Darker shades should be avoided for surfaces exposed to direct solar radiation. The surface of the roof can be of white broken glazed tiles. The surface of the wall should preferably be textured to facilitate self shading.

Evolution

The Power of the World always works in circles, and everything tries to be round..The Sky is round, and I have heard that the earth is round like a ball, and so are all the stars. The wind, in its greatest power, whirls. Birds make their nest in circles Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing, and always come back again to where they were. and so it is in everything where power moves. - Black Elk
v v v v v Throughout the history of humankind, we have sought needed shelter from the elements. No one knows precisely when man began to design and build his own shelter rather than relying only on what could be found, but the circle was one of the first shapes used. Traditional buildings laws were influenced by nature and climate. Pataleshwar cave Pune. The structures seem to be tailor-made to provide maximum comfort even without the modern air conditioners or heating devices. One of the most intriguing house designs is an igloo the icehouse that shelters Eskimos in perhaps the most hostile climate on earth. The igloo is a squat round structure that reduces stack effect and conserves the heat that is built up inside. Inside the igloo, hot air rises and the occupants on a high self inside to take advantage of the warm air. The cold air sinks and is collected near the entrance, which is used, as a storehouse. The same principle of air pressure is used in desert areas to keep buildings cool. In deserts where the maximum and minimum temperature variations are huge people have built houses ingeniously to beat the heat. While the igloos trap heat and reduce stack effect, the desert buildings use the stack effect to allow natural ventilation for structural cooling. It could be that man was simply imitating the creatures around him in building his shelters.

The circular shape was easy to make.

Structural supports could be made to support each other and skins or grasses could easily be laid over the shape. Wind and rain resistance could readily be obtained without corners to cover and seal. Man's shelter has evolved over thousands of years, all the way from found caves to the elaborately built high-tech homes of today, and will continue to evolve into the future.Of these, the most significant is the basic shape of a building.

A building's shape is reported by energy experts to be the first important factor affecting energy consumption.
v

v v

Bhongas are found in the Kutch district of Gujrat. A bhonga os a single cylindrically shaped room, with a conical roof. Kutch has a very high earthquake risk and the cir cular shap e o f the wall helps to resist horizontal shaking. A round building has about ten percent les s wall area exposed to the elements than a square building of equal floor area. The savings approach fifteen percent when comparing a round to a rectangular shape of equal area. A round building's reduced wall area means additional savings when you consider that ten to fifteen percent less exterior wall needs to be paid for and built initially. The same applies to the foundation walls and footings required. Taking all into account, savings in initial building costs and future energy costs can be substantial. A circle is the most common and resource-efficient shape in the universe.A circle is also an inherently strong shape.

Old and New:

v

v v

At some point of architectural evolution, we seem to have forgotten the basic logic that was used to make the first houses. When design complemented the climate and the materials were easily and locally available. Some traditional and rural dwellings still preserve this logic. We can learn from that. But this certainly does not mean that we should completely revert to old forms of construction. What we need is a healthy mix of the traditional and the modern. A combination of old wisdom and new building science. Strength:

Round is the strongest, indeed the optimal shape, whether it be the trunk of a tree, or a reed of grass in nature - or the whole earth. Only the round shape can support the concrete roof which gives uncompromised strength and security from any kind of disaster, while providing the most interior space of all construction. Energy Efficiency:

v v

v v

v v v

All of natures creatures instinctively rely on the round shape for warmer shelter. A bird's egg, its nest, a rabbit den - all are proof that it takes less wall area to enclose an equally sized round, than a square or rectangular space. As such, a round house uses at least 30% less outer wall area than an identically-sized conventional house. Incorporating our energy-conserving layouts and passive solar features, the highly energy-efficient, and our unique construction techniques of interlocking components make our structure a super-efficient, achieving energy savings of up to 50% over conventionally built buildings. Aesthetics: Viewed from any point, this structure presents a neat "all-around" appearance Round shape has limitless flexibility of design, layout and most importantly, orientation to the sun for optimum solar gain and to take advantage of whatever view there is. The roof design is self supporting which allows unlimited floor plan design, since there are no-load bearing walls.

All things are bound together. All things connect. Every things aim at one point unity. Sustainable development utilizes a whole systems approach to design. Physical, social and economic systems are integrated into the design approach. The physical and economic systems are integrated into the design approach. The physical and economic environment is arranged to spend quality time through leisure and recreational activities. Elements of design: Ecological elements Water conservation, reuse and reclamation. Introduction of passive solar design approach. Introduction other renewable energy systems. Less energy consuming & locally available building materials. Social design element Ecological design principles Pedestrian oriented design. Open air performance arena. Physical design element The R.S.I. Golf Course on the eastern side of the site is a major feature which influences the design. A significant portion of site is left undisturbed. There is an ease of access throughout the site. This energy-efficient complex is designed to provide all round comfort to the users. Building is placed to get better functional Suitability of the interior spaces and parking layouts are integrated with existing site conditions in order to eliminate negative impacts and minimize the removal of existing trees. Comfort requirements are met through dexterous use of the five basic natural elements sun, air, earth, water and sky to ensure natural lighting, ventilation and space conditioning Openings have been designed such that requirement of artificial lighting is minimal throughout the day when the building is under maximum usage. By creating atrium spaces with skylights, the section of the building is such that natural light enters into the interiors of the building, considerably reducing the dependence on artificial lighting. Adequate natural lighting and ventilation is provided through optimizes combination of solar passive design, energyefficient equipment, renewable sources of energy and materials with low embodied energy. An effective combination of closed and open spaces helps in modulating the micro-climate so that it keeps the building cool and well-ventilated.

Proposed Techniques
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy: Building accounts for 70 % of the nations electricity use, and electric power plants, which burn coal to generate electricity, are the main source of global warming. Power plants cause other environmental and health problems, including acid rain, smog and mercury poisoning in lakes and rivers. We can reduce these hazards by curbing energy use through sustainable building technologies, such as solar power and efficient design. With its energy efficiency design, the proposed building uses over 60 % less energy than a typical building of a same size. Moreover, it produces no carbon dioxide emission, a major element of global warming, by meeting its electricity needs with rooftop solar panels. All commercial buildings in the India were as efficient as ours; the country could cut energy production enough to meet 70% of the requirement of the Kyoto Protocol, the international pact to reduce the greenhouse gas emission that cause global warming. Renewable Energy Generation Solar Power Solar Array About 20 percent of the buildings electricity is generated by a Power Light 7.5 kW solar electric array. This system produces up to 37.5 kWh of electricity daily and is connected to the grid, of local electric utility infrastructure. When the buildings electricity consumption is low, the system funnels clean power back into the grid, running our electricity meter in reverse. The Database of State Incentives for Renewable Energy (DSIRE) is a comprehensive source of information on state, local, utility, and federal incentives that promote renewable energy. Solar Array Design The solar array is designed to provide design, engineering, construction management, and technical support for proposed buildings. Lighting In any buildings, more energy is used for lighting than for anything else. Our building is strategically designed to dramatically reduce artificial lighting demand. Sunlight reaches every story through skylight, and through windows of the building. Daylight sensors dim hallway lights when sufficient daylight is present and occupancy sensors turn room lights off when rooms become vacant. The office fixtures, suspended from the ceiling, project light up and down, allowing 90 percent of the light to be utilized (which is about 50 percent better than typical systems) with reduced glare. All rooms and conference rooms have interior windows facing the hallways. Translucent glass, used for the skylight afford privacy while diffusing natural light throughout the building.

Low-Mercury Fluorescent Light Bulbs Lighting in all of the enclosed rooms is provided by low-mercury Philips ALTO T-8 lamps. Standard fluorescent bulbs, considered hazardous waste after their use, contain three times as much mercury. Combined with energy-efficient lighting design, the bulbs reduce the buildings average annual mercury waste by 600 milligrams, compared to that of a standard project. The amount of mercury eliminated by NRDC would be toxic to over 2,000 people each year. Ceiling Lights These suspended fixtures project light up and down, allowing 90 percent of the light to be utilized (which is about 50 percent better than typical systems) with reduced glare. Occupancy and Daylight Sensors Occupancy sensors throughout the building turn lights off when rooms are vacated. All but the buildings emergency lights go off automatically every evening and may be turned on manually when needed. The buildings emergency lights, located in corridors and stairways, remain illuminated around the clock; however, they are linked to sensors and dim when enough daylight is present. Rooftop Skylight Two pieces of half-inch-thick glass fused together make this skylight sturdy enough to be walked on. The skylights exterior surface is sandblasted so that it doesn't become slippery when wet. Additionally, it contains two thin, translucent inner layers of low E (low Emissivity) glass, which block heat flow, thus reducing energy needed for cooling or heating. The skylights translucence affords privacy while allowing light to penetrate the building. Emergency Exit Signs Energy-efficient exit signs throughout the building use flat, one-quarter-watt, solid-state Electroluminescent light bulbs or lamps. Windows All of the exterior windows are made with low-E (low Emissivity) glass. Eastern- and western facing windows with direct exposure to the sun are double-pane super windows. These windows allow visible light in reducing the need for artificial lighting but have a reflective coating to keep heat inside when it's cool outside. This coating also prevents excess heat from overheating the interior when it's warm outside.

Cooling and Heating In summer, cities can be six to eight degrees warmer than rural areas because of what scientists call the urban heat island effect. Heat islands occur when vegetation is replaced by asphalt and concrete, which typically absorb the suns heat, then radiate it back into the air. The scarcity of trees and shrubs in cities also reduces shade and the natural evaporative cooling that plants provide. Proposed building uses plantings and light-colored roofing to reduce heat islands. Natural ventilation cools the building through transoms and operable windows in every room, and rooftop monitors use louvers and fans to draw warm air up and expel it outside. Many spaces, including our rooftop conference rooms, rely on such natural ventilation exclusively. In other areas, peak-load cooling is supplied by high efficiency air conditioning units that use outside air only and a non-ozone-depleting refrigerant. This cooled air is delivered through floor-level plinths that provide cool air only where it is needed to occupants rather than pushing cold air downward through hot, still, polluted air that accumulates at the top of a room. Such displacement ventilation systems improve air quality and save energy by leveraging natural forces. Every individual room has a cooling convector that turns off if the nearest window is opened, thereby using energy only when needed. Each office also has its own thermostat so that occupants may control their own office temperature. In conventional buildings, all individual offices are wastefully heated or cooled to the same temperature, even if rooms are vacant or occupants have different preferences. All the air and water in our building is heated with natural gas. Heating and Cooling Units Each enclosed office has its own heating and cooling plinth diffuser. Each plinth acts as an air distribution and cooling device and houses a heating convector. Air Conditioning Cool air is provided by a high efficiency system that uses outside air only and a refrigerant that does not deplete the ozone. Ceiling Fans Adjustable, multispeed ceiling fans throughout the building aid natural ventilation. The fans blades are designed to mimic the aerodynamic performance of aircraft propellers to improve air movement downward. Weather Station This is part of an elaborate system that monitors the buildings energy savings. It measures air temperature, humidity, and solar radiation and is linked to a touch-screen display in The David Family Environmental Action Center that shows our energy savings in real time. Water Heater The buildings tank less water heaters conserve energy by burning gas on demand, only when hot water is needed. Indoor Environmental Quality People spend up to 90% of their times indoor, where research shows that the human dosage of harmful agent is significantly higher than outdoors smog withstanding. Scientist have identified some 5,000 harmful chemical compounds indoor, and poor indoor environmental quality leads to productivity loss and health care costs of more than 2 billion Rs, per year. Proposed building is designed to create a healthy, pleasant and productive work environment. All the rooms are flooded with natural light and fresh air, all windows can be opened. The paints, adhesive, furniture and other materials used throughout the building give off zero or low levels of harmful gases or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and high efficiency exhaust fans remove VOCs and heat emitted by equipment such as copy machines and laser printers. Carbon dioxide levels are constantly monitored and the building is free of urea-formaldehyde (the more harmful of two formaldehyde types used) and vinyl, whose manufacture produces the potent carcinogen dioxin. Fiberboard Medite II, a wood based panel manufactured from softwood resins and formaldehyde-free synthetic resin, was used for most of the buildings cupboards and shelves. Medite II, is made of 90% pre consumer recycled wood. Wall base Rubber wall base was substituted for vinyl base throughout the building, including in the rooms, passages and stairwell. Paint Paint used inside and outside the building is a low VOC, water based acrylic paint. Exhaust fans Proposed building toilet block are equipped with exhaust fans that remove indoor air pollutants, such as ozone and VOCs and heat generated. Fans used in the dormitory used less are operated with switches to eliminate energy waste. All the fans are energy efficient and low noise. Carbon dioxide monitor Carbon dioxide levels in high occupancy areas are constantly monitored. A light signal on the monitors reminds occupants to let more fresh air into the room. Furniture Virtually all of the wood furniture in the building bears the FSC seal of approval. Stunning conference tables are made with reclaimed maple, considered sustainable because of its rapid growth. Reception desk contains poplar, which is likewise abundant. The desks countertop, meanwhile, shimmers with embedded recycled glass chips and shell collected from restaurants. Other unusual furniture pieces, such as the seat-belt chairs in our conference rooms and carpet padding made with recycled blue jeans, give new life to materials that would otherwise cause our landfills to overflow. Rooms also are outfitted with sofas, file cabinets, and other sustainable furniture items. Work Areas Work areas Desks and bookcases are part of the Reff line design. The FSC-certified wood is derived from a manufacturing method that yields 98 percent of the tree versus the typical 48 percent. The laminated furniture is comprised of over 40 percent recycled content and is designed to be cleaned with environmentally-friendly products. Desk lighting is highly efficient and low mercury. Chairs These adjustable, ergonomically correct Life Chairs are made primarily of recycled aluminum. Fabrics used for the chairs are made from recycled plastic soda bottles and other recycled materials, and the chair has a total recycled content of 64 percent. Paints and adhesives used have no VOC emissions. Up to 80 percent of the chairs components are easily recyclable. All Knoll materials and components are nontoxic, odorless, nonirritating. Reception Area Reception Desk Poplar, bamboo, and formaldehyde-free fiberboard with recycled aluminum pull knobs. Countertops are made of Syndecrete, cement composite that contains fly ash, a coal combustion by-product. No energy-intensive extraction or processing of limited raw materials goes into the production of fly ash. The countertop also includes roughly 60 percent recycled material, including glass chips, abalone shell fragments recycled from restaurants, scrap wood chips, and nylon carpet fiber. Conference Room Conference Table Made from indigenous species and reclaims hardwood that might otherwise be burned or turned into pulp by industrial wood products companies that primarily trade in softwoods.

Carpet The carpet, 100 percent wool, is from Andres Floor Coverings. The carpet padding is 100 percent postindustrial recycled fibers, including nylon, acrylic and polyester. Videoconference Equipment The videoconference equipment is comprised of a television, and speaker system. The television is Energy Star-rated. Sustainable building practices and Materials Construction and furnishing of buildings for about half of all raw material use in the country. The energy used to manufacture building products totals 5-7 % of India energy consumption. Nylon carpeting used throughout the building contains roughly 30 percent recycled nylon scrap left over. The carpet is also dyed with a process that uses 10 times less water than conventional methods. The carpet padding is made of 100 percent recycled material, including blue jeans. Tiles Ceiling tiles throughout the building are made of 66 to 78 percent recycled mineral-fiber tiles. Concrete Flooring The colored concrete flooring in the drivers dormitory contains fly ash, a by-product of coal burning. It is widely available. Doors Interior and exterior wood doors contain no formaldehyde. Elevator Panels The buildings elevator sidings contain wheat straw, a byproduct of wheat harvesting that is often disposed of by burning, which creates carbon dioxide. Flooring The lobby and conference room floors are Plyboo, which is laminated bamboo. Bamboo, a grass that is harder and more stable than red oak wood, is processed using nontoxic materials. The flooring in the drivers dormitory and basement hallway is Marmoleum, a natural linoleum made primarily of raw materials including, linseed oil, rosins, wood flour, and timber grown in controlled European forests, with a jute backing. Recycled Gypsum Drywall Interior Panels, used throughout the building, are a type of drywall made of 95 percent recycled materials, such as newspaper and gypsum from titanium dioxide production, and such post-industrial sources as power plant desulfurization equipment. The panels are moisture-, mold-, and fire-resistant and designed for high traffic areas. Partitions Bathroom stall partitions and doors are 100 percent postconsumer recycled polyethylene milk containers. Stairways The stairs throughout the building are made of poplar, a fast-growing, widely available, abundant wood. Water Conservation Less than one fifth of our planets water is accessible fresh water, and only 30% of that is potable. Over 80% of municipally supplied water is used in buildings. Proposed building achieves a 60% water savings compared to conventional building of same size, resulting in an annual water savings of over 60,000 gallons. This is accomplished through an advanced water treatment and recycling system and the use of low-flow plumbing and high efficiency fixtures. In addition to reducing potable water needs, proposed buildings water systems protect building's runoff, which would otherwise pollute the bay. One aspect of the system works by funneling rainwater to our treatment facility in the buildings basement. This treated water exceeds state-of-the-art water quality standards that now apply in major urban centers. Rainwater that is not captured for our treatment system irrigates plantings or percolates through porous paving materials to recharge underground water supplies. Water Treatment and Recycling System Water recycling system that captures gray water collected from our showers and sinks, and rainwater. This combination of water is run through our filtration network, then used for irrigation and flushing toilets. The system has a processing capacity of 800 gallons per day and reduces our water consumption by 50 percent. It incorporates two custom-built, 40-footlong cisterns hidden beneath large planters that store a total of roughly 3,000 gallons of rainwater. For rain not captured by our cisterns, buildings porous paving system and landscaping planters allow water to be filtered, and then percolate into the ground to recharge the groundwater, instead of contributing to urban runoff. Dual-Flush Toilets All the toilets in the building are dual-flush, using either 0.6 or 1.2 gallons per flush as needed. Conventional toilets use 1.6 gallons per flush. Waterless Urinal Two waterless, odor-free urinals contribute to the buildings water efficiency and are more hygienic than standard models. Low-Flow Plumbing All the sinks and showers in the building are equipped with low-flow aerators to reduce water consumption. Piping Much of our piping is a Kitec brand composite made of aluminum and non-polyvinylchloride plastic. It emits no harmful gasses. Landscaping and Irrigation The buildings landscaping includes drought-tolerant plants. This Xeriscape is watered with a drip system that emits measured amounts of water through small tubes to each plants root ball. The system is far more efficient than sprinkler use, which typically causes up to 60 percent of water sprayed to evaporate without ever reaching roots. Plants on both sides of the building are watered with a high efficiency subterranean system. The system allows the plants to absorb water only when needed through capillary action. It dramatically reduces evaporation and is 30 percent more efficient than a drip system. All of the buildings plants are irrigated with recycled water from site water treatment system. Porous Paving Porous Paving, made of 100 percent recycled materials. The gravel filters pollutants and lets rainwater enter the groundwater. Typical hard-surface paving causes polluted water to run off into storm drains and waterways. Green Roof Green roofs reduce heating and air conditioning costs, retain and detain storm water. Green roofs also absorb carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming, but nobody has measured the impact until now. The green roofs of the curvy building on top of a concrete roof, the green roof system begins its build-up with three layers of waterproofing. The green roof system comprises 2 of sandy soil topped with the same pervious paver blocks used at grade, and overlain with a uniform grass sod. In their appearance and composition, the green roofs are identical to the grassy pedestrian and parking areas at grade. As part of the zero discharge design, recycled water from the building is used for irrigation and any runoff is directed to percolate at grade. During the dry season, the green roofs are irrigated daily. Green roof reduce energy costs with natural insulation. It absorbs storm water, potentially lessening the need for complex and expensive drainage systems. Green roof improve air quality and help reduce the urban heat island effect. About 15% of heat coming through roof is eliminated by green roof. Green roof technology extends roof life and is effective for sound insulation in the building.

GREEN BUILDING CONCEPT

Green building design is a practical and climate conscious approach to building design. Various factors, like geographical location, prevailing climatic conditions, use of locally available and low embodied energy materials and design parameters relevant to the type of usage of the building are normally taken into consideration. Such an approach ensures minimum harm to the environment, while constructing and using the building. A look at traditional building techniques clearly shows that the concept of green or sustainable buildings has existed in our country for a long time. These buildings were generally made of locally available materials like wood, mud and stone and dealt with the vagaries of weather without using a large amount of external energy to keep the inhabitants comfortable. Buildings are among the greatest consumers of energy. Combining cutting edge energy efficient technologies with adaptation of practices used in vernacular architecture which used more of locally available materials and resources is necessary, especially for countries like India where per capita energy consumption is rising rapidly due to high economic growth. This will reduce our dependence on the fossil fuels which have to be imported and are depleting at an alarming rate. A green building uses minimum amount of energy, consumes less water, conserves natural resources, generates less waste and creates space for healthy and comfortable living. When a number of green buildings are located in proximity, they would create a green zone, providing much healthier environment and minimize heat-island effect. The ultimate aim will then be to create many such areas, which would help the towns and cities and therefore the nation in reducing total energy requirement and also the overall global carbon footprint.

PRINCIPLES OF GREEN BUILDING

v v v v v v v v v v v

Minimizing the impact of the building on the environment in construction. Maximizing health and comfort of occupants. Use of renewable and recycled materials. Long term energy conservations. Environmentally responsible building design. Conservation of materials and resources. Reduced water and energy consumption. The use of indigenous building resources. Regulation of energy efficient design principles. To include energy harvesting, waste management and reuse, water harvesting and handling. The strict implementation of rescue and recycling of building materials. Issues under Green Building:

Rain Water Harvesting: Rain is the primary source of water. Rainwater harvesting is a dynamic storm water management tool that can be used to address multiple objectives and provide several storm water, water and energy conservation and financial benefits. Harvesting rainwater can reduce the use of drinking water for landscape irrigation. Coupled with the use of native and desert-adapted plants, rainwater harvesting is an effective water conservation tool because it provides "free" water that is not from the municipal supply. There are many benefits to harvesting rainwater. Water harvesting not only reduces dependence on ground water and the amount of money spent on water, but also reduces offsite flooding and erosion by holding rainwater on the site. Benefits: It improves ground water quality and quantity both. It prevents saline water intrusion in ground water from sea in coastal areas. It increases ground water table and hence decrease pumping costs. Water logging in low laying areas can be reduced up to a certain extent. To augment the expensive piped water supply. To save expenditure on water. To prevent soil erosion and urban flooding. Simple technology. AT 27,QUEENS GARDEN, PUNE. Aids ecological conservation.

Hence, rain water harvesting, water cycling and water treatment are cheapest and easiest techniques to overcome water problems. v v v An efficient rainwater harvesting system preserves water to the maximum possible extent and is used to irrigate the landscape. Water run-off from the roofs and from the paved area is collected and stored in a collection sump below the building. This water is used for various purposes including landscaping and flushing toilets. Comfortable Interior by Indoor Plants: Indoor plants naturally maintain the relative humidity comfort range of 30 60 % by the processes of transpiration and evaporation. Further research studies have shown that people are less stressed and more productive around plants, willing to pay more in retail areas that include trees and are more innovative and creative when surrounded by leafy plants and flowers.

Waste Management: Decentralized Waste Water System: Decentralized waste water system (DEWATS) is the process of cleaning recycling waste water. In this system waste water that is grey water from kitchens, bathrooms and black water from toilets undergoes a mechanical process of filtration. After filtration, this treated water can be used for flushing toilets and gardening. DEWATS applications provide state of- the-art-technology at affordable prices because all of the materials used for construction are locally available.

Advantages of DEWATS Technology: Providing treatment for domestic and industrial wastewater Low primary investment costs as no imports are needed Efficient treatment or daily wastewater flows up to 1000m3 Modular design of all components Tolerant towards inflow fluctuations Reliable and long-lasting construction design Expensive and sophisticated maintenance not required Low maintenance costs Hence DEWATS technology is an effective, efficient and affordable wastewater treatment Renewable Energy Sources: solution for small and medium sized enterprises (SME). Solar Renewable Energy: In the world of renewable energy the power directly driven from sunlight is termed as solar energy. Solar renewable energy can be produced in many ways but the most basic include: Generating electricity using photovoltaic solar cells Other solar renewable energy utilization includes solar ovens and cookers, solar water heaters, solar chimneys and solar air conditioning. Heating buildings using sunlight, and solar water and air heating does passive use of solar renewable energy. Photovoltaic Solar Power: Photovoltaic solar power is capable of providing direct current without the need for a generator. Photovoltaic solar panels are made of silicon cells; silicon is a good semiconductor readily available in the Earth's crust. When the silicon cells absorb enough of the sun's positively charged photons, the silicon begins to produce negatively charged electrons. The photons collect at the bottom of the panel, while the electrons hover at the top of the panel, effectively turning the solar panel into an oversized battery with positive and negative terminals. Solar photovoltaic system integrated with the roof skylights provides day-light and also generates electricity. A solar water heating system meets the hot water requirements of the kitchen and the rooms.

Advantages: Solar water heating systems can produce enough heat to heat all of your water; often times, solar water heaters will pay for themselves in about three years. Photovoltaic systems, on the other hand, require no maintenance because they have no moving parts. Photovoltaic panels can also last between 20 and 30 years. Solar Air Conditioning System: Outcome of intensive research brings a unique revolutionary concept in the world of Air Conditioning. The novel feature of this system is that it does not have compressor and it is free from Ozone depleting CF C. Solar Air Conditioning system is based on Solar Energy, which is FREE forever, resulting in tremendous savings of electricity bills. Solar Air-Conditioning System is currently available for large-scale centralized applications, with capacities of 60 TR and above. Environmentally Friendly: Conventional Air Conditioners and refrigerators use a lot of electricity, or in the case of absorption cooling system, gas or some other combustible liquid. Reducing the consumption of these Energy sources means less greenhouse gas production. Also non CFC based functioning of SACS makes it eco-friendly by preventing depletion of Ozone layer. Flexibility: By using heat exchangers, and in particular heat pipe style heat exchangers, liquids (e.g. refrigeration fluid) can be heated to high temperatures. Economic Saving: Reduce electricity bills by using Solar Energy to run Air Conditioners, refrigerators and Freezers, provide central heating (Radioactive or Air), Cool water for drinking and supply hot water. Suits Large Scale Applications: Solar powered Air-Conditioning and refrigeration is ideal for hotels, supermarkets, schools, factories, and large office premises etc. Practical: Throughout the year, solar thermal output and thus Air Conditioning output, match building cooling requirements.

One suitable arrangement is a high level window which would admit reflected light to the ceiling. If the ceiling is colored white, this method would ensure adequate and well diffused interior lighting. When a sunlit view through a window is unavoidable, the strong luminance contrast between the view and the window surround can be reduced by painting the adjacent wall a light color or painting the inside of window frames with white color. Other openings may be placed in opposite or flanking walls, to throw some light onto the wall surrounding the window. Construction Materials for Sustainable Development:

Building construction places a huge burden on the environment. The materials used for construction incorporate large quantities of natural resources, as well as utilization of waste and byproducts, along with energy efficient method is necessary to ensure sustainable construction. Use of special concrete as construction materials for sustainable development is the recent development in concrete technology self compacting concrete and geopolymer concrete. As well as age ols concept of recycling, are assessed for their benefits with respect to energy and resource conservation and waste utilization, both of which are important facets of green building. v v v v v Fly ash: Fly ash is a coal combustion byproduct. The use of this byproduct offers advantages by diverting the material from the waste stream, reducing the energy investment in processing virgin materials. Although fly ash offers environmental advantages, it also improves the performance and quality of concrete. Fly ash increases strength, reduces permeability, and reduces corrosion of reinforcing steel. Fly Ash Bricks: Fly ash bricks have good compressive strength, low water absorption, high density and low shrinkage value as compared to burnt clay bricks. LILADHAR PARAB ARCHITECTS & DESIGNERS P. Features of fly ash bricks: Economical and eco friendly. No emission of green house gases. Low energy consumption. Size 230x110x70 mm Ash content up to 60% by weight of brick. 10% lighter in weight than conventional clay brick. More comprehensive strength. Uniform in shape with frog. More durable as strength increases Less mortar consumption in masonry. Savings in plastering cost. Fly Ash in Concrete: In terms of public good, the greater use of fly ash in concrete contributes to reduced greenhouse gas (GHGs) emission without negative impacts on the economy. The overall quantity of CO2 emitted will be reduced in one important sector of the economy without affecting it. Such changes in the construction sector should provide certain flexibility to the governments to meet emission targets with reduced pressure on other sectors bound to be more affected by measures of CO2 reduction. In addition to CO2 emission reductions, there are other potential benefits of using larger amounts of fly ash in concrete including reduced landfills, lower-cost concrete, increased durability, and reduced fly ash disposal costs. Cost Benefits: Since it is a byproduct, the initial cost of fly ash is minimal compared to that of portland cement. However, for the cement or concrete producer, the cost of fly ash will depend mainly on the cost of its transportation from the thermal power plant. Consequently, in areas close to power stations producing good quality fly ash, there should be cost benefits associated with the use of fly ash in concrete or in the production of blended cement. Thus, by making use of appropriate technologies, fly ash concrete of equivalent quality to that of conventional concrete could be produced at a lower cost. Therefore, there is some immediate economical benefit potential in using fly ash in concrete. It is well established that the proper use of fly ash in concrete improves the durability of concrete, translating into increased service life of concrete structures, resulting in considerable savings in repair and replacement costs. Consequently, there are potential indirect economical benefits of using fly ash in concrete.

Benefits of Double Glazed Windows:

v v

There are several benefits to using double glazed windows, in the building. It is a good solution to moderate the heating costs and eliminate condensation on the windows. Perhaps the most significant is the insulation properties. For better sound insulation as well, for more light, to improve the comfort of a home in the summer too, because the double glazing greatly reduces solar gain. In summer, double glazing will stop heat from entering the home, as it helps to reduce the amount of radiated heat gain. Generally, the insulation properties of double glazing are so great that it may save a significant amount on your heating or cooling bills. Double glazed windows and doors are also great for reducing the amount of ambient Improvements in Sanitary Fixtures Technologies: noise that enters in the room. Toilets Dual-flush toilets- A significant way to save water in buildings is to replace existing single-flush toilets with dual flush toilet. The current standard dual-flush toilets use 6 liters on full and 3 liters on a half-flush. The most common dual-flush toilet is the 6 liters full flush/3 liters half flush, although a 4.5/3 liters dual-flush toilet is now available in select models. Interruptible Flush Cistern- The flushing action can be interrupted at will and the discharge begins once the button is pressed and a second press interrupts it, so using just the amount of water necessary. Urinals:

Low water use urinals- In some of the standard systems water is applied automatically through a continual drip-feeding system or by automated flushing at a set frequency, 24x7, regardless of whether or not the urinal has been used. Water consumption varies with the system model at an average of 4 liters per flush. While water-efficient urinals uses 2.8 liters per flush and in recent times. Smart Flush systems using 0.8 liters per flush have also been launched. Sensor operated- Urinals detect the presence of people through movement sensors or door switches (combined with an electronic delay to stop flushing for a set period after flushing) Waterless urinals- There are various technologies available for waterless urinals. In oil barrier technology the urinals operate through the use of an oil wall between the urine and the atmosphere, preventing odors from escaping. While in the other technology the barrier has been replaced by a seal with a collapsible silicone tube that closes after the fluid has passed through it, to prevent gases attempting to flow from the sanitary pipe work, into the room. A third system uses biological blocks which include microbial spores and surfactants this can be placed into any urinal thus eliminating water use. Therefore, by breaking down the urine into components, the buildup of sludge and crystals which causes blockages is prevented. Energy Efficient Lighting: This comes under the energy & atmosphere credit. The intent is to optimize energy performance of the building and reduce wastage. For the commercial green building complex under study, following energy efficient lighting system are proposed. Incandescent to CFL- Fluorescent Lamps are about 3 to 5 times as efficient as standard incandescent lamps and can last about 10 to 20 times longer. Characteristics: A BMS is most common in a large building. Its core function is to manage the environment within the building and may control temperature, carbon dioxide levels and humidity within a building. As a core function in most BMS systems, it controls heating and cooling, manages the systems that distribute this air throughout the building (for example by operating fans or opening/closing dampers), and then locally controls the mixture of heating and cooling to achieve the desired room temperature. A secondary function sometimes is to monitor the level of human-generated CO2, mixing in outside air with waste air to increase the amount of oxygen while also minimizing heat/cooling losses. Systems linked to a BMS typically represent 40% of a building's energy usage; if lighting is included, this number approaches 70%. BMS systems are a critical component to managing energy demand. As well as controlling the building's internal environment, BMS systems are sometimes linked to access control (turnstiles and access doors controlling who is allowed access and egress to the building) or other security systems such as closed-circuit television (CCTV) and motion detectors. Fire alarm systems and elevators are also sometimes linked to a BMS, for example, if a fire is detected then the system could shut off dampers in the ventilation system to stop smoke spreading and send all the elevators to the ground floor and park them to prevent people from using them in the event of a fire. Functions of Building Management Systems The three basic functions of a central, computer-controlled BMS are:

LANDSCAPIN G:
Landscaping is the design of outdoor and public spaces to achieve environmental, sociobehavioral, or aesthetic outcomes Extensive Green Roof: A green roof, also known as living roofs is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane. It may also include additional layers such as a root barrier and drainage and irrigation systems. Extensive green roofs, by contrast, are designed to be virtually self-sustaining and should require only a minimum of maintenance, perhaps a once-yearly weeding or an application of slowrelease fertilizer to boost growth. Extensive roofs are usually only accessed for maintenance. They can be established on a very thin layer of soil. v v v Roof top areas are utilized for grass planting in order to minimize storm water runoff. The green roof tops, providing insulation and reducing heat gain to keep the space underneath cool. Roofing material and strategic planting help reduce heat is land effect. Indigenous planting and other landscaping efforts result in the no net increase in the rate of storm water leaving the site. Environmental benefits Green roofs are used to: Reduce heating. Reduce cooling (by evaporative cooling) loads on a building by 50 -90 %, especially if it is glassed in so as to act as a terrarium and passive solar heat reservoir-a concentration of green roofs in an urban area can even reduce the city's average temperatures during the summer. Reduce storm water runoff. Natural Habitat Creation. Filter pollutants and carbon dioxide out of the air which helps lower disease rates such as asthma. Filter pollutants and heavy metals out of rainwater. Help to insulate a building for sound; the soil helps to block lower frequencies and the plants block higher frequencies. Increase agricultural space. AT follow local GARDEN, Green roofs offer fire protection and 27,QUEENS fire codes. PUNE.

Financial benefits:
v v

Increase roof life span dramatically Increase real estate value Storm water Management:

With green roofs, water is stored by the substrate and then taken up by the plants from where it is returned to the atmosphere through transpiration and evaporation. In summer, depending on the plants and depth of growing medium, green roofs retain 70-90% of the precipitation that falls on them; in winter they retain between 25-40%. For example, a grass roof with a 4-20 cm (1.6 - 7.9 inches) layer of growing medium can hold 10-15 cm (3.9 - 5.9 inches) of water. Green roofs not only retain rainwater, but also moderate the temperature of the water and act as natural filters for any of the water that happens to run off. Green roofs reduce the amount of storm water runoff and also delay the time at which runoff occurs, resulting in decreased stress on sewer systems at peak flow periods. Moderation of Urban Heat Island Effect

v v

Through the daily dew and evaporation cycle, plants on vertical and horizontal surfaces are able to cool cities during hot summer months and reduce the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. The light absorbed by vegetation would otherwise be converted into heat energy. UHI is also mitigated by the covering some of the hottest surfaces in the urban environment black rooftops. Green roofs can also help reduce the distribution of dust and particulate matter throughout the city, as well as the production of smog. This can play a role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting urban areas to a future climate with warmer summers. Landscaping of site: There are endless benefits of landscaping. Landscaping makes dull areas pleasing, office buildings into warm, livable spaces. Locally adaptable plants can save water and money. A sustainable garden works in harmony with nature. There are many techniques that can improve the health of your garden and minimize any negative impact on the environment. Planting native plants and trees is one of the best ways to work with, rather than against, nature.

CONSTRUCTION COST
The misconception that the costs of green design, construction, and certification are prohibitive stands as one of the greatest barriers to the adoption of sustainable development. However, numerous studies and reports have demonstrated that though green buildings may incur initial increases beyond conventional construction costs, this premium is more than compensated for over the lifetime of the building in concrete financial returns such as savings in utility bills, increased property values and employee productivity gains. There is no significant difference in the average costs of Green Building seeking and typical conventional buildings. Green project costs of an average of 5-7 percent more in upfront costs, and sometimes even below standard market construction costs. Found that the first costs of constructing a sustainable building tend to match or only slightly exceed those of comparable nongreen buildings. In addition, in order to accurately evaluate the impact of green building on your budget, it's important to look beyond first costs. General b reak-up o f co nventio nal b uild ings : 1. Ensure that a comprehensive sequence of operations is developed for the operators. Maintain logs and test reports for equipment maintenance Ensure that data from all meters, both energy and water is logged regularly and perform trending analysis on periodic basis to understand the areas of energy and water wastage. Ensure that the fresh air systems provided in the building function optimally and conduct regular audits to ensure that proper fresh air is circulated in the building. Prevent pollutants from entering the building by taking measures to prevent sir contamination by idling vehicles, use of chemicals, etc. Ensure that any sensors, timers, meters and monitors are properly calibrated at regular intervals to ensure their proper functioning. Educate the occupants to turn off lights and other equipment when they are not occupying their desks/workspaces. Water Conserving Measures: Implement a program to educate the employees/occupants to turn off the taps when not in use. Ensure that the faucet aerators are kept clean for unrestricted flow. Conduct regular walkthrough audits to plug all leaks =and identify areas of water wastage. Treat the waste water to tertiary standards and ensure that the same is used for flushing and/or landscape irrigation. Buy cleaning chemicals which require less water to use and remove and ensure that the cleaning water is also sent to the sewage treatment plant. Ensure that any rainwater harvesting systems are maintained free of debris and the sand and Gravel filter is cleaned out regularly and replaced.
