ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Maj Gen Shubhi Sood was commissioned into 4th BN of 8th GR. Posted as ADC in Sept 1968 to then Lt Gen Sam Manekshaw MC GOC-C Eastern Command in Calcutta. Continued as ADC after Gen Manekshaw became COAS. Before 1971 war then Capt Sood promoted to Major and appointed as the Dpty Mil Asst to the COAS.

As DMA he had ringside view of 1971 war. Did Staff Collage Course at Camberley in the UK in Sept 72. Commanded 1st Bn of 8th GR and went on to command 26 Inf Div in J&K. Took retirement on 31st March 1998 as Chief of Staff at 12 Corps.

Discipline is the code of conduct of decent living. What is moral courage? It is the ability to distinguish right from wrong and having so distinguished it, be prepared to say so, irrespective of the views held by your superiors or subordinates and of consequence to yourself. To those of my commanders, who took an inordinately long time to come to a decision I coined a Manekshawism If you have to be a bloody fool, be one quickly. When dealing with your men you have to be a very humane man. When dealing with the Government, and the bureaucracy, you have to have great moral courage. Naturally, you have to have

professional knowledge. If you find a man with all the three things he will make a Good
Chief.There is always one thing or the other missingand then you will get a Chief like me, who has all the three things missing! The three great leaders, Caesar, Napoleon and Wellington had one facial characteristic in common. They all had long nosesso had Cleopatra and Indira Gandhi. God has ordained that I take orders from two women: my wife at home; and PM Indira Gandhi in office! Any one who says he knows no fear, is either lying, or Gurkha!

POSITIVE POINTS
Essentially largely biographical. Shows the Field Marshalls more than forty years of a glowing, and very vibrant career. Book divided according to essential phases.

Language is comprehensible.
Military jargons well explained for layman's understanding. Adequate photographs many in colour and some never before published.

NEGATIVE POINTS
Poor editing and an over-dose of the double inverted comas and the parenthesis. More anecdotal in format. Leadership qualities quoted are far and few and more frequently

based on compassion and empathy.

Chapter on Leadership -Manekshaw Style gives the impression of forced effort to compile events for categorizing

the book under leadership.

The Title does not match the essence. Photographs should have been further elaborated.
