INTRODUCTION
HDMI is a compact audio/video interface for transmitting digital data. The first & only industry supported, uncompressed, all-digital interface.

audio/video

Provides an interface between any A/V source, over a single cable. supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. Backwards compatible with DVI, requiring only a simple passive adaptor or cable to connect between the two interfaces. HDMI can carry video signals at resolutions up to (and beyond) 1080p in fullcolor at full 60 Hz (and higher) refresh rates.

WORKING
Uses TRANSITION MINIMIZED DIFFERENTIAL SIGNALING (TMDS) protocol to move information from one place to another. TMDS is a way of encoding the signal to protect it from degrading as it travels down the length of the cable. This standard codes an eight-bit data into a 10-bit signal and transfers them using differential transmission. The encoding step helps protect signal quality by reducing the number of chances for the signal to degrade. TMDS is a technology optimized for robust digital data transmission while minimizing electromagnetic interference (EMI).

WORKING
The receiving device, decodes the signal and It measures the difference between the signal and its inverse. This unique encoding and serialization technique in TMDS enables HDMI to achieve data rates that far exceed other differential signaling technologies (25 times greater data bandwidth than USB 2.0, for example).

The HDMI Cable

The Cable
19 wires wrapped in a single cable that resembles a USB wire, HDMI is able to carry a bandwidth of 5 Gbps(gigabits per second). HDMI has three physically separate communication channels, which are the DDC, TMDS, and the optional CEC. TMDS DATA CHANNELS (6 PINS) Carry the digital data representing audio and video. Audio data are sent as HDMI packets. TMDS CLOCK CHANNEL (2 PINS) It is a reference clock signal that enables the receiving device to robustly recover the data stream. CONSUMER ELECTRONICS CONTROL (CEC) (1 PIN) It is a dedicated control bus that enables devices to automatically control other attached devices.

The Cable
Display Data Channel (DDC) (1 pin) This is an I2C bus that is used for devices to convey their capability information to other devices. +5V power (1 pin) Supplies low current, +5V DC power. Hot Plug Detect (1 pin) A signal intended to convey to the source that a "hot plug event has occurred (such as a cable that has been unplugged). TMDS Shield Lines (4 pins) Each of the four TMDS channels is carried in the cable with a shielded twisted pair of wires. The shields, used to minimize cross-talk and EMI emissions, are attached to ground at both ends of the cable. CEC/DDC Ground (1 pin) Used for the current return for all non-TMDS signals

Consumer Electronic Control (CEC)

CEC is a dedicated single pin bus that allows all attached devices to
communicate bi-directionally with a series of standardized commands.
The most commonly expected applications and benefits for CEC include:

1. One Touch Play

2. Deck Control:

3. Tuner Control

Display Data Channel (DDC)

The DDC is used for configuration and status exchange between a single transmitter and a single receiver. The DDC is used by the transmitter to read the receivers Enhanced Extended Display Identification Data (E-EDID) in order to discover the receivers configuration and capabilities.

High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP)

HDCP helps bring high-definition digital content to consumers by providing copy protection over HDMI.

Developed by Intel Corporation to prevent copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across HDMI, DVI etc.
It works by encrypting a digital signal with a key that requires authentication from the transmitting and receiving ends.

ing product. If authentication fails then the signal fails, which means no picture on the TV screen.

Handshaking is making sure that all of your HDMI devices can recognize each other.
Exchanges a special key called a Key Selection Vector or KSV.

HDCP utilizes the DDC channel to initiate a "handshake.

HDMI Versions
VERSION 1: It supports a maximum TMDS bandwidth of 4.95 Gbit/s-with a maximum allotted video bandwidth of 3.96 Gbit/s (165 MHz) supporting up to 1080p/60 Hz video 24 bit color depth, and 36.86 Mbit/s maximum audio bandwidth for up to 8 channels of 192 kHz 24-bit audio. VERSION 1.1 : This added support for DVD Audio. VERSION 1.2: 1. Added support for One Bit Audio as used on Super Audio CDs for up to 8 channels. 2. Fully specified for the first time the Consumer Electronic Control (CEC) support.

VERSION 1.3: 1. Increased the single-link bandwidth to 340 MHz or 10.2 Gbit/s data stream. It also supports Deep Color with 30-bit 2560x1600p75,36-bit 2560x1600p60,and 48 bit 1920x1200p60 color space compared to the original 24-bits RGB or specified in previous HDMI versions.

2. Updated the list of CEC commands.

3. Version 1.3 has brought with it definitions for HDMI Cable categories 1 and 2,apart from defining a new mini HDMI connector (Type C) for portable devices. 4. It incorporated automatic audiosyncing or auto lip sync capability. VERSION 1.4 : 1. Addition of a 100 Mb/s HDMI Ethernet Channel(HEC) between HDMI connected devices.

2. Increase in the supported resolution to up to4096x2160p24 or 3840x2160 at up to 30Hz.

3. Introduced support for 3D over HDMI supporting common 3D formats and resolutions up to 1080p. 4. Introduced three additional HDMI cables : Standard HDMI Cable with Ethernet includes Ethernet connectivity. High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet includes Ethernet connectivity. Automotive HDMI Cable allows the connection of external HDMI-enabled devices to an in-vehicle HDMI device.

HDMI v/s DVI

Digital Video Interface, or DVI, is actually a predecessor of HDMI. Uses TMDS protocol.

There are two important differences between DVI and HDMI:

1. HDMI incorporates content security that is called HDCP. 2. DVI can only support digital video, while HDMI can support both audio and video on the same cable. Despite their differences, a backward compatibility for video exists between HDMI and DVI, because HDMI evolved from DVI.
