"Let us imagine an enclosure of virtually any scale that lets sunlight into itself and that prevents heat from escaping when the interior microclimate is too cool. It also reflects sunlight, and it dumps heat out into the night sky when its interior is too warm . Let us further conceive that, within this enclosure, sufficient heat could be stored in the ground to provide several days worth , even if the sun did not shine. We would then have a system that would maintain a very stable interior microclimate without requiring mechanical heating or cooling. Let us then also imagine a building that is designed not only to provide shelter from the weather, but also to provide some food; fresh water; liquid and solid waste disposal ; space heating and cooling; power for cooking and refrigeration; and electricity for communications, lighting and household appliances.

IMAGINE EARTHSHIP

Peace, Please enjoy. This is a taste of true urban sustainability and freedom. Earthships will provide many benefits to the Philadelphia region. They successfully create "green jobs, generate and contribute to property tax, as well as being a viable remedy for homelessness, as the homes are self sufficient. Further, the first Earthship in an urban environment, in the United States will be making history. It is forward thinking and it will bring much publicity and opportunity to those that support us. We have the structural plans and support to move forward from: Gov. Ed Rendell, Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown, Arlen Specter, Councilmans Wilson Goode Jr., and Curtis Jones Jr., Anthony Hardy Williams office, the Mayors Office of Sustainability Rep. Kenyatta Johnson, and other notable figures and community leaders in the city. To realize this home, we need a vacant lot. The neighborhood that this home is built in will change forever. Besides raising the property value, it will beocme an embassy for people in the urban sustainability movement, including the Mayor who hopes to boast having the "greenest" city in America. This is the future of urban sustainability. In love, Rashida Ali-Campbell

URBAN LANDSCAPE
Philadelphia is plagued with vacant property, brownfields, illegally dumped tires, supermarket deserts, storm water runoff pollution, homelessness, energy woes and a financial crisis.

EARTHSHIP BIOTECTURE
Sustainable Solutions is a non profit company in Taos, New Mexico started by Michael Reynolds. He is the architect and founder of Earthship Biotecture. His company creates Earthships, which are buildings that heat and cool themselves naturally via solar/thermal dynamics, collect their own power from the sun and wind, harvest their own water from rain and snow melt, contain and treat their own sewage on site, produce food in significant quantities, and utilizes materials that are byproducts of modern society like cans, bottles and tires.

THE PHILADELPHIA EARTHSHIP EMBASSY WILL BE A TWO (2) BEDROOM DEMONSTRATION HOME USED TO TRAIN OTHERS THE PRINCIPLES OF BIOTECTURE. THE TRAINEES WILL BE QUALIFIED TO OBTAIN MANY OF THE GREEN JOBS IN THE PHILADELPHIA REGION. IN ADDITION, THEY WILL BE ABLE TO TRAIN OTHERS HOW TO BUILD EARTHSHIPS. EARTHSHIP DESIGN PRINCIPLES:
1) THERMAL/SOLAR HEATING & COOLING 2) SOLAR & WIND ELECTRICITY 3) CONTAINED SEWAGE TREATMENT 4) BUILDING WITH NATURAL & RECYCLED MATERIALS 5) WATER HARVESTING 6) FOOD PRODUCTION

EARTHSHIPS USE GREY AND BLACK WATER TO GROW LUSH INDOOR GARDENS

EARTHSHIPS USE WATER IN THE MOST EFFICIENT WAY POSSIBLE. EARTHSHIPS HAVE ACHIEVED MAXIMUM USE WITH MINIMUM COST AND NO WASTE.

SEWAGE MANAGEMENT

AREAS WITH GREATEST NEED FOR SUPERMARKETS IN PHILADELPHIA

PEOPLE LIVING IN IMPOVERISHED COMMUNITIES HAVE A GREAT NEED FOR FRESH FOOD. EARTHSHIPS GROW A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF FOOD. THESE LUSH HOME GARDENS WILL BE AVAILABLE TO THE UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES OF PHILADELPHIA. SOUTH FACING FLOOR TO CEILING WINDOWS MAXIMIZE SUNLIGHT CREATING A HOME GREENHOUSE FOR PLANTS. INDOOR PLANTS ARE PART OF GREY WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM.

FOOD MANAGEMENT: EDIBLE GARDENS, FRUIT & VEGETABLES, AND FISH PONDS

EARTHSHIPS ARE PASSIVE SOLAR HOMES FIRST. THE TIRES ARE INSULATORS. OFF GASSING IS NOT AN ISSUE AS THESE TIRES ARE NOT EXPOSED TO AIR.

EARTHSHIPS USE THE PHYSICS OF THERMAL DYNAMICS TO HEAT AND COOL THE HOMES NATURALLY.
