Identified Crisis
A place which combines learning, displaying and working successfully whilst having a strong link to the greater art community.
Identified Crisis
The need to connect the views via one singular movement of the proposed HSW Art studio, due to the lack of unification in currents, north of the river, and in contrast to that, the singular southerly pull kangaroo point poses.

Identified Crisis
Susceptibility to flood, HSW heritage listed site so no impedance or change can be applied. New proposal must create visual balance with existing structures. Bridge overhead may detract from utilising natural light/heat.
Assignment 2 Found there was a lack of immediate contextual analysis (especially with form)
Massing This form was also easily possible as much of the compression force could be borrowed from the cliff. Problem solution (Flood history) Simple solution to flood (Have main building areas on elevated level)
Problem Solution Due to unchangeable circumstances site lacks natural heating and light.
Solution Main south facing facades opened by curtain walls to create greenhouse effect (also on a slant to absorb max sunlight
Directional Cue Looking at bowerbird mimicry which was helpful, leaving a substantial visual cue as to the entrance and main level/ functional spaces.
By now I knew I would have my functional spaces split between two levels but simply out of the fact that I had left over space, I added a third level and I found this was quite relevant as it added an extra level of public, semi public/private and a private level which was added.
Biomimicry Theme
Focussing on the mating/ courtship behaviours of the bowerbird species. These birds are native only to Australia and Papa New Guinea, so very relevantsite wise and have a distinct style of building their structures and adorning it with carefully selected and placed items to attract a female.
Biomimicry Theme
Being an art centred structure, another use for the curtain walling was to display what was happening in those areas and being a decorating ritual in itself I wanted onlookers to be able to see the functional spaces in use as a decorative element.
Biomimicry Theme
Mimicking the slant and borrowing the compression force from the cliff itself to support the slant was beneficial in a number of ways- I could eliminate most of the need to support this slant from the elimination of empty spaces and cavities (much natural foliage) and also by streamlining and mimicking the cliffs walls less stress was put on the building in terms of currents and winds.
Overall result and some exterior perspectives, If you look closely the third level (most on slant) cuts into the cliff
