Social Etiquette
Myanmar (Burmese) people have different view on upper and lower parts of the body. Upper part is considered sacred while lower part is considered inferior to the upper part. For example, towel used for the lower part should never be mixed with the upper part, especially the one used for the head and the one for the feet Never clean your feet in the basin you used to clean your hands and face Never touch a persons hair, head or cheek, even if you consider it as a friendly gesture. Myanmar people would not consider it friendly, and will think you are rude Dont point your feet towards Buddhas image, elder person or any sacred place. Better not to point your feet to anybody at all It is a custom to remove your shoes before entering a Burmese home Be careful of the manner if there is a Buddhas shrine in the living room. Avoid pointing your feet to the Lord Buddha as it is considered an insult in Myanmar For Burmese (Myanmar), head is the most sacred part of the human body while feet are the most inferior part In Myanmar, they dont have an informal phrase or expression to be used as a greeting. The famous phrase Mingalar Bar is quite formal and nobody use it in the streets. The closest literal meaning of Mingalar Bar is have good things unto you
