Floor
A floor is generally the lower horizontal surface of a room, and/or the supporting structure underneath it. A floor typically consists of a support structure called a sub-floor on top of which is laid a floor covering to provide a walking surface. The work of installing a floor covering is called flooring. This term is also used to refer to any permanent floor covering and in particular to wood flooring.

Floor covering is a term to generically describe any finish material applied over a floor structure to provide a walking surface. Flooring is the general term for a permanent covering of a floor, or for the work of installing such a floor covering. Materials almost always classified as floor covering include carpet, area rugs, and resilient flooring such as linoleum or vinyl flooring. Materials commonly called flooring include wood flooring, ceramic tile, stone, terrazzo, and various seamless chemical floor coatings.

The choice of material for floor covering is affected by factors such as cost, endurance, noise insulation, comfort and cleaning effort.

Tiling a Floor
Use only floor tiles when tiling a floor. There is a difference. Floor and wall tiles may look similar, but floor tiles are generally thicker and are textured to make them safer to walk on. Larger floor tiles will not safely adhere to walls.

Preparing Floors for Tile

The original flooring material should be removed before you install your new tile since the new tile installation is only as good as the underlying floor. The subfloor must be sound enough to support tile. Subfloors under tile should be no less than 1" thick. Tile can be heavy and must be installed on a flat, rigid surface. A flexing floor will cause cracks to show up in the grout later and may cause tiles to break. If floor "bounces" when walking over it,add rigidity by renailing the subfloor to the floor joists.

Installing Tile on a Floor

Begin laying the tile from the center of the floor where the two final reference lines cross.

Start by laying a tile at the intersection of the lines, then use the lines as a guide as your way outward toward the walls in each quadrant.

Spread the adhesive with the trowel's notched edge, combing it out in beaded ridges.

Spaces between ridges of adhesive should be almost bare.

Tile laying pattern

A "jack-on-jack" pattern is the most common. The pattern consists of tile laid like squares on a checkerboard

A "running bond" pattern has offset grout lines for each row.

MARBLE
Marble is available in a selection of finishes offering a highly durable and attractive flooring surface for almost any application. Polished marble is very well suited for a formal setting such as an entrance hall, dining room or reception. A white marble such as Bianca Carrara will go very well in a bathroom. If a softer less formal look is required honed marble can be very effective.

Polished
As the name indicates the marble is given a highly polished surface. This, in the correct situation is fabulous but remember that it can show minute scratches over time

Honed
This is the stage prior to a polished surface and has a matt appearance. Often used for flooring as it is often considered easier to maintain.

GRANITE
Granite is extremely hard wearing and can be used externally as well as internally. Polished granite looks fantastic and can be treated with a non-slip substance to prevent slipping when wet. The surface can also be honed or flamed to give it texture . The most popular size of granite for domestic applications is 30.5 x 30.5 x 1cm. These tiles are available in a wide selection of colours. Prices depend on the type of Granite, certain types are difficult to extract thus the price is higher than the more common types. The use of Granite is almost limitless from a kitchen worktop to floors and walls offering an elegant and practical solution to many design issues.
